I don't like this weird nostalgia wave for "wholesome" entertainment that is going on. Mr. Rogers in particular. It was a garbage show, even for little kids. Back in the 70's as a kid, you'd much rather watch The Electric Company, Captain Kangaroo or The Great Space Coaster.
It only got to exist because it was on PBS and didn't have to compete for ratings. You put that garbage show on syndication and it wouldn't last 2 seasons.
Instead, this hackfraud gets a movie and stamp for making sub-par entertainment.
-
I dunno, I was a neurotic/anxious kid so I found the show calming and comfy to watch. :doge
-
Do you think Fred Rogers was an autistic person? Make sense when you think about his personality and the vibe of his show.
-
Ok, yeah, you triggered me.
Fred Rogers is some of my favorite memories as a kid. And The Electric Company was rad, too. Style for days.
-
All he wanted to do was love you just as you are. You monster.
-
Just because you watched something as a kid, doesn't mean you can't look back with a more critical eye as an adult. I watched every episode of the A-team, but that show was total trash in retrospect.
Mr. Roger's show, from the sets, to the scripts, to the ham-fisted "lessons" was a testament to terrible children's programming. Just laziness all around. To think that generations of kids had to suffer through it because of the inertia it established in the 70's and 80's when nothing else was on.
Don't let entertainment stockholm syndrome cloud your judgement. You're not a prisoner to your past choices.

What do you do with the mad that you feel
When you feel so mad you could bite?
When the whole wide world seems oh, so wrong...
And nothing you do seems very right?
What do you do? Do you punch a bag?
Do you pound some clay or some dough?
Do you round up friends for a game of tag?
Or see how fast you go?
It's great to be able to stop
When you've planned a thing that's wrong,
And be able to do something else instead
And think this song:
I can stop when I want to
Can stop when I wish
I can stop, stop, stop any time.
And what a good feeling to feel like this
And know that the feeling is really mine.
Know that there's something deep inside
That helps us become what we can.
For a girl can be someday a woman
And a boy can be someday a man.

The show definitely had a sedating, tranquilizing effect.
-
See this is why Republicans are the way they are ("Fuck you, got mine"). They never understood the love Mr. Rodgers had for them and wanting them to be a better person today than they were yesterday. :doge
Tell us how you really feel, Adam. *puts on a Cardigan, grabs a puppet* Show us on the puppet where your parents hurt you.
-
I pretty much agree with you, and it is one of my most unpopular opinions when it comes up. :lol
I hated having to watch that show back in the day, it was boring and those stupid puppet skits were so awful. I never watched it by choice.
Coming up cynical and with negative nostalgia for him, I always expected the other shoe to drop MJ style. Am glad that by all accounts he was a generally great guy, am fine with people celebrating him and the values he put out/instilled/whatever...but the show still sucked.

It's actually a cunning, savvy business move.
By being so overly genial and sweet, it made him untouchable. Affiliates probably wanted to drop the show in the early 90's, but were you going to be the one who 'Fired Mr. Rogers?' Hell no.
So, I think that's the moral of this thread. Mr. Rogers: conniving, shrewd businessman who stole public funds to build an evil empire of bad entertainment. Then was insulated from criticism and having to adapt because of his "good intentions" he maliciously crafted over the years.
I'm going to apply these lessons to my current life.

Hardly.
But his slow-speaking style is something that is hard to replicate. I don't think the show was "super entertaining" or anything, and it's defintely boring if you compare it to other kids shows (especially now a days), but 1) he's a minister, that's what he was trained to do before getting into kids shows and 2) because of that, he had this "philosophical" approach to educating/entertaining kids.

Basically, (and Bork feel free to spoiler this I guess) the take away is "yeah, I suck at drawing. But you know what? I couldn't care. I [read: you as a kid] enjoy it, and the product of my output is radically different from someone elses. What I made is unique and nobody can take that away from me."
Which, I guess you could take as a "lol this is why millennials are participation trophies" but the idea remains: You can suck at something and still enjoy it, so long as you enjoy it fuck those people."

He talked slow because he was talking to us, not at us. He talked slow because it was kind. He wanted us to listen. Even when he had people on he would talk slowly and softly, and when they spoke back they even talked slowly. It was a comfortable environment.
FOH calling him autistic.

You know what kid show deserves unending hate? Caillou.
Fuck that whiney little shit. :doge
-
I loved Mr Rogers and even in high school and college, if I stumbled across PBS and it was airing I'd watch a few minutes. My favorite parts as a kid were the puppet segments. King Friday, Daniel The Tiger, etc. We had very restricted "tv time" when I was a kid, but we were allowed to watch PBS as much as we liked. Mr Rogers, Sesame Street, Wishbone, Arthur, etc...I loved all that shit.
-
:nope
-
You tended to like Mr Rogers when you were very young and then moved on but I also had an older phasse where I liked it also because it was so damn chill.
It was Asmr before Asmr.

Mr Rogers was a solid dude. I agree the show was kinda boring but cmon
-
Buffalo Bob Smith (Howdy Doody) was a solid dude, too.
But once his show started becoming dated and stiff, they got his ass off the air. He wasn't rewarded to a lifelong show of doing the same old shit just because he had a good start.
I think that's the other life lesson of Mr. Rodgers. 1) Get a government job 2) work hard for the first 5-6 years. Then you can mail it in and cash checks the rest of your life.

I won’t let my son watch Caillou exactly because I don’t want him to grow up thinking it’s totally okay to be a big pussy.
Last time I saw Mr. Rogers was a few weeks ago and it was pretty bad. I hadn't seen it since I was a child so it was like new to me. Daniel Tiger looks like an aborted cat fetus. How is that even a fucking puppet? It's like a dirty sock with eyes. It didn't even look like a fucking tiger.

You’re such an evil bitch, ToxicAdam.

Hating on positive shit for kids smh.

This thread is garbage. It's worse than the politics thread when Cindi was going on about guns.

Always enjoyed the show. Therapeutic in a way.

It DOES matter, because I don't want my kids to grow up thinking a tiger looks like an unwashed cum sock.

Don't even tell me that thing doesn't look like it's been used to wipe up heaven knows how much sperm.

If I catch them wanking it to hentai I'm going to be so disappointed. What would Fred Rogers say?!
-
whenever I feel like exterminating a segment of the population because of their race, religion, or sexual orientation I think to myself "Mr Rogers would be so disappointed in you" and then I get teary-eyed and don't exterminate them
so he's like the anti pepe
-
music on the show was legit.
-
Next level cynicism. Id prefer my nonexistent child be lulled into a lesson in morality and compassion than worrying theyre watching a YT vid of Elsa dry grinding Cobweb Joe set to dubstep

In my head, I can see this entire conversation playing out.
Mr. Rogers: That is an impressive hammer that you have there. Would it be okay if I held it?
Thor: You may certainly try, Sir Rogers of the hood.
R: Is it very heavy?
T: There are many who find unmovable.
R: How interesting. It doesn't seem very heavy to me.
T: ...
R: But you know, sometimes life is a lot like that. Something that may be very easy for one person may be very difficult for another. Have you found this to be true?
T: Um... yes. Yes, I have.
R: Do you know why that is?
T: *looks at Rogers curiously*
R: I think that it's because everyone is special and unique in different ways. Just because someone has difficulty lifting your hammer, doesn't mean that they are not talented in other ways. In fact, I suspect that those individuals can probably do things that you and I would never dream of.
T: *nods* That is true. You are very wise, Sir Rogers. I am humbled by your counsel.
R: And I am so glad that you decided to visit today.
