THE BORE

I love old video games, but I also lack the 'energy' to just go ahead and play them,
because I just go back to stuff I know already. So instead of being productive and beating Gradius or Earthworm Jim, I just play a sports game because
it is so convenient to just get a game or two in and then to turn the console or PC off.
So please provide me with some of your favorite old games that are probably not as mainstream as a Mario or Zelda game for me to play and to beat.
I will provide some status updates in this thread ( :no1curr ) and maybe someone has a hidden gem that I completely missed.

Sid Meier's Pirates.
X-com. The OG ones, with base building.
-
Ascend to a new level, play:
Illusion of Time / Gaia
Terranigma
:rejoice
-
OK, I checked these two on how long to beat and they are fairly short.
But please, no RPGs that take 500 hours :doge
Already beat Pirates and X-Com. :smug

Also Parasite Eve, because something made me think about it today. Short JRPG by the Chrono Trigger director with a cool buddy cop horror theme.
-
Did you ever play Monkey Island? Play Monkey Island. And then the sequel.

I think I beat every Disney LUCASFILM adventure game that has ever come out except for Full Throttle.
Same for Castlevania btw., not Simon's Quest though. :doge
-
Play Toonstruck breh

-
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
Silent Bomber (imagine Bomberman theoretically made by Platinum Games or something)
Axelay
-
Klonoa it is :rejoice
But other suggestions are always welcome. This is supposed to be a long term project. :doge

Most of these games aren't too long, with Ys 4 and Lucienne's Quest the longest at ~20 hours.

Turbo/CD: Ys Book 1 and 2, Ys 4 (fan translation), Xak III (fan translation), Lords of Thunder, Legendary Axe, Exile
Master System: Wonder Boy III
Genesis: Thunder Force 2-4, Ranger X, Shinobi III, Saint Sword, Landstalker, Crusader of Centy, Castlevania Bloodlines, 2 Crude Dudes
SNES: FireStriker, Run Saber, Space Megaforce, Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse, Brain Lord, Neugier (fan translation)

Really early Klonoa impressions after beating the first world.
Pros:
Klonoa has a cool Pacman hat
I think it looks good and the controls are tight
The story is complete nonsense, like in any good platformer
Cons:
I am not digging the music so far.
It's a little too whimsical...

Full Throttle is pretty short. You can finish it in an evening provided you don't get stuck. Also, it's excellent. Except for the bike segment. That's terrible.
-
Released more than 15 years ago or so. So PS2 era is fair game, even though I think it's still a little weird to refer to PS2 games as old.
Thimbleweed Park looks cool. I bet I even own it own Steam, although technically it doesn't meed my arbitrary qualifications :wag :doge
The bike segment was the reason I bounced off of it :stahp
-
I'm liking Klonoa so far, it's a pretty nice little easily digestable platformer.
I am little bit stuck on this (https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/klonoa/images/4/4c/Gelgbolm.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20100417210759) fucking boss right now. I know what to do, but it's just finicky enough to drive me insane. :maf
-
Never mind :ego

Aw man :'(

Think of where you were when PS2 came out. It's old :goty
-
Felix the Cat (NES)
-
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles

One of the best soundtracks of all time. :aah

So Front Mission is out, then. :goty

I finished Klonoa. I thought it was neat. Good level design and didn't overstay it's welcome.
It still holds up well enough visually although some of the stages were so ugly that it reminded me of Pandemonium :lol
It was a little bit too generous with giving you extra lifes though and I wish it was more challenging platforming wise. The "puzzles" were pretty straightforward and I wish there was a little more to them.
However it entertained me more than I thought, especially since I am not the biggest fan of it's artstyle and music.
As the most neutral reviewer ever I'd give it a solid 7/10
Next up: 2 Crude Dudes.
How can you not play a game with that name?
-
Try Tomba. That was a great platformer. I'm really into RPGs so most of my recommendations don't count.
-
Doom and Doom II
-
Get Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (or 3).
Install game and start.
Instantly lose many hours to the glory of its fantasy strategy-RPG hex-based combat.

That boss reminds me of an old game with platformy/action mechanics that you’d like but I can’t remember the name. Feels like something by Treasure...but not stretch panic I don’t think, hmmm
*edit* figured out what I was thinking of, Nights into Dreams bosses. The psychedelic color scheme reminds me of those fights.
-
Actraiser.
-
I would play the Gaia trilogy
Soul Blazer -> Illusion of Gaia -> Terranigma
Other good choices:
Beyond Oasis
Secret of Evermore
Young Merlin
-
Faxanadu and Xanadu.
-
Lost Vikings
-
Kickle Cubicle
Really great puzzle game for the NES
-
Kickle Cubicle
Really great puzzle game for the NES
Fire n Ice and the Lolo games, too!
-
A Boy and his Blob :doge
Darkwing Duck on NES.
Basically just a Mega Man hack, but so good.
Two Crude Dudes... brings back memories. Used to play that with the kid next door. It was either that the kick-ass MegaDrive Power Rangers or Double Dragon II :rejoice
Kickle Cubicle
Really great puzzle game for the NES
Not to mention when time runs out it turns from mellow to scary as fuck. :doge
-
Give the Freedom Force games a try.
If you're playing Two Crude Dudes, you should also play Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja on the NES. It has the best story in gaming and best voice acting.

This track is still great.
-
Revenge of Shinobi, especially the original version with all the copyright ripoff characters.
-
Roller Games
Its a side scrolling beat em up on rollerblades, which gives it some sectiones where you skate and jump etc.
Also look at this amazing coverart, like its one of those that just sparked your imagination as a kid.
Loved this one.

How about the prequel to Diddy Kong Racing.

Yeah this is great. If u liked Ghouls 'n Ghosts this is a real cool follow up with a bit of a metroidvania slant.
