Title: Travel questions for the EuropeanBores
Post by: Bebpo on August 12, 2018, 06:17:00 PM: Found a good fare from LA -> London during my only free time frame for next few months in Mid-September. Thinking about going about 10 days outside the flying. Trying to figure out what I can see/do in 10 days without rushing around like crazy.

Looks like I can realistically do any of the following:

4-5 days based out of London/surrounding -> 4-5 days based out of Edinburgh/surrounding = aka England trip
4-5 days London -> 4-5 days Paris = London/Paris trip
4-5 days London -> 4-5 days Dublin = London/Ireland trip

I could potentially do 3 cities but I feel like it'd be rushing, so idk. I'm getting old and I like my more, stay somewhere nice & beautiful and explore around, kinda trips. Originally I was thinking of London/Dublin/Edinburgh but it might be too ambitious.

Not really feeling long ass drives/trains that eat up entire useful time/days, so would rather be based in cities and just go to places within 2 hours of those cities. Also would like to eat good stuff and have good drinks, maybe listen to some good local music, and hopefully meet up with any UK bores like Premium Lager. Also planning on going solo because my friends are always poor, I don't have an SO, and coordinating with other people for international travel is pretty impossible in my experience.

Any thoughts on what would be more enjoyable? Only places in Europe I've been are South Germany and Venice, so England/Ireland/France would all be new to me.

England/Ireland would be good if you only have option for big cities.

Post by: BisMarckie on August 12, 2018, 08:32:42 PM: I think Paris is a city you have to visit. Sure the tourist attractions are crowded and these areas are overpriced as hell, but the view over the city from Sacre Coeur is absolutely worth it. You can skip going up the Eiffel Tower IMO.

3-4 days is more than enough if you focus on the main attractions of the city and getting around in Paris is pretty easy.

Well tbh I don't like French food much, so I could skip. More interested in south France when I do France and I really want to stay at a Italian Villa sometime too, like the one from Assassin's Creed II, but again those are another trip where I either have more time or I'm focused on South France/Italy.

Yeah, I definitely wanna do Netherlands on a driving trip along the coasts, but that's not this trip :P

Dublin idk what to do besides drink in pubs and listen to Irish singers at pubs. Not sure how many days I need for that. Maybe I should do London -> Edinburgh -> Dublin at 3 days each. I do want to go to Bath though. I love hot springs so much...

Another thing you could do would be to rent a nice AirBnB somewhere in the countryside of Italy and just enjoy the life there. Fantastic food, beautiful landscapes and some old ruines to visit are always near you. Maybe near Florence? Although not sure how interesting that is without somebody accompanying you. Rom is basically a living museum, more than worth a visit as well.

I thought it was well known that AC is the way us non-Euro's get to explore Europe. They're basically just tourist simulator games.

So I'm booking things and I'm thinking about doing something like:

4 days in London (3 in the main city, 1 day trip in York)
3 days in Amsterdam (day trip to Bruge or Brussels if there's not 3 days of stuff to see)
4 days in Paris (2 days in the main city, 1 day in Versailles)

Looking around here's all the stuff if I had unlimited time and not just 11 days that I want to see:
-Edenburgh (castle)
-York (museum and ruins and stuff)
-Bath (old bath ruins)
-London (Tower of London, British Museum, House of Parliment, Westminster Abbey)
-West Ireland (Cliffs of Mother, Kylemore Abbey)
-Paris (Louvre, dunno what else)
-Versailles (palace)
-Mont St. Michael (fucking cool island place, but would eat up 2 days of Paris to see leisurely)
-Bruge (old monestary stuff)
-Amsterdam (scenic canals and stuff)

I also don't want to be always moving high pace, only get 1 day to barely glimpse a city. But I don't think I want to just hang in London/Paris for 5/6 days each and call it a day. That's why I'm thinking like 3 cities of 3-4 days each would be good and give time to do day-trips or not do day-trips depending on how it goes. If there's tons to do maybe I finish the trip only having seen London, Amsterdam, Paris and nothing else. But that's still probably pretty good stuff to see in < 2 weeks.

The hipster in me and person who hates crowds in me does want to go somewhere more obscure than just 3 big cities. Was originally thinking of doing a couple nights in York for something more chill. But seems like I can just do York as a day-trip and lose less time so hmmm.

Took me like 30 hours to finally plan this shit. Way too many options.

I'm flying to London, doing like 6 nights there, then Paris 6 nights and then I gotta go back to Heathrow and stay at the airport hotel because the multi-city flight stuff was dumb and way more expensive than I could justify. So gonna head out on the last train back from Paris -> London -> Heathrow and just crash at the airport hotel the night before flying out.

I'm still gonna go to other places, but I figure I can base out of London/Paris and 5-6 days in each will give me time to get out and see some other stuff. In England definitely going to go to York for a day, maybe do Edinburgh for a day (or crash overnight there), maybe check out Bath for a day.

In Paris, I think I'm gonna do a 24 hour quick up to Amsterdam in the morning, spend the afternoon/evening site seeing, crash overnight and do more stuff the next morning and come back to Paris. Also plan to do Versailles. Probably won't have time to do St.Michel, but can probably do a day trip out to some Chateaus.

Will look into stuff in London/Paris and figure out how many days I want to stick in the cities. I found a cool haunted house in Paris that I wanna check out:

And I bet there's all kinds of weird shows and stuff that would be cool to see besides the usual museums/historic sites/palaces/castles.

Will definitely do Ireland sometime but will save that for a different trip when I can spend a full week there driving around.

Good you are skipping Ireland now, dublin is lame compared to the rest of ireland, ill def have some tips on that

Imho you should cancel paris as your second base as london is a 476372 better base then Paris for all of Europe

You can get cheap flights out of london to anywhere

I've filled my London/Paris nights up with late night events going until 10pm/11pm/midnight/1am.
A lot of people are telling me it is straight up not safe to walk back alone in London/Paris at those time and take the tube/underground/subway/trains that late. Sounds more like LA than Tokyo or Manhattan.

So everyone is recommending me that when I finish each night late out in the city I take a cab back to my hotel from wherever I am. I looked around for cab apps and what I'm seeing is:

London - Gett first, and if no luck then try MyTaxi (if I'm leaving a theatre or something, you think they can just call me a cab when the show is over?)

Paris - Uber first, then G7 or LeCab

Does that sound about right? I hate sitting around my hotel at night so I've booked the nights with Theatre Shows and Pub tours, and Late night Museums, Comedy clubs, etc... but I don't want to get mugged :-X

Yeah, I figure it's probably like LA, which is fine but I'd rather take a Lyft/Uber any day over the subway late at night.

And I don't mind spending a few bucks here and there. So the cost isn't a factor, just trying to figure out what's the most feasible for getting around. Will probably just mess around with the apps while I'm there and see what works.
