I don't know, I feel like thats kind of wrong. Nothing stands out? I mean I guess the amazing art direction, attention to detial, directing, and in general film tecnical parts being pretty much the best Japanese anime has to offer dosen't stand out. An amazing well realization of an "80s" dystopia Japan is quite the achievement. The world of Akira feels alive in a way that few anime do. Where does GitS take place? In some non-descript Asian city that randomly has Hong Kong aspects(Yes port city is excactly that), but Neo Tokyo is a character unto itself.

There's also few actual relevant anime that talk about actual political themes. Akira has something to say about Japan. It's constant struggle with it's military history and it's place in the future. How it uses and treats it's future generations. And it's pretty grey in regards to how it view's Japan's Peace constitution as the colonel is right and wrong on some things and the government proves plenty incompetent, because it just wants to ignore it's history. Thinking only of the future Olympic Games.  All that as a backdrop to a relatable Big brother vs little brother story with one of the most iconic bikes in the entire world.

I don't find anything mediocre, nor do I find it gross.  It certainly is'nt medicore shit. Not even close, that's kind of an idiotic statement about one of most important anime movies ever.

Ignore him.

A comment on the yt video summed it nicely.

“The anime is great. The manga is a masterpiece.”

Started watching the video and disagree on one initial point- Akira was big in the west, yes, but what I remember having the biggest impact and bringing "anime" to the mainstream was Ghost In The Shell, which was screened in multiple theaters in my city, had newspaper articles, etc.  I remember Akira being shown at one art house theater and that was it.  It then became kind of a cult hit on VHS over the next few years.

GITS is quite a bit better

not as good animation, but quite a bit better art i'd say

and decent to watch at least, especially some scenes are really really amazing

whereas akira, nothing really stands out, it's just one gross scene after the next, that last battle was nasty as fuck :-X

No way.  Not at all- The GITS movie ditched Shirow's art style, which really stood out (especially back then), plus stripped the characters of humor and personality.  I enjoyed reading the comics but the movie literally put me to sleep the first time I saw it.  I don't think that a lot of Shirow's works got very good anime adaptions.  The best is probably Dominion Tank Police.

Akira, story-wise, is kind of a mess (which is what happens when you try to condense so much story into a single movie.  I mean...it's called "Akira" and Akira is not even in it  :lol), but it was a visual masterpiece that still holds up.  I also have a very soft nostalgic spot for the original English dub, which I saw back in '89 or '90.  Leonardo from TMNT as Kaneda had me hype.  :lol

it was gross as fuck to watch

too much gore

yes, for animation quality, it's obviously god-tier

but as a film, it is mediocre shit

Original dub, especially so.

Yeah, Dufus ain't wrong. it's a masterpiece on the visual and musical scale. On coherency and structure, not so much.

Akira on VHS was the first anime I've ever bought back in the early 90's... haven't seen it in a while though.

If you bothered to watch the video you’d know why akira’s narrative in the anime isn’t perfect! Hint: it took two major plot points from the utterly MASSIVE manga and inserted it into a two hour film.

The manga as said, is a masterpiece.

There’s also classics like Megazone, Macross, DYRL, and Gunbuster that make the 80s pretty great. These things like amazing thanks to blu Ray as well.

Cindi, help me out. There was an 80s anime i watched and loved as a child. It had to do with a group of psychic kids, one specific dude that was super powerful and could fly through the sky like a shooting star or something weird like that.

Have any idea of what it may be? I was never big on anime outside of the big stuff.

I would always make time for something i hadn't seen by Satoshi Kon (goat), Takahata(edited in, forgot Grave of the Fireflies for a minute), Mamoru Oshii or Katsuhiro Otomo (and Miyazaki/Ghibli to a lesser extent). I haven't got time for serials (unless they're more like a miniseries), and I've watched most of what they have to offer. I can love the medium, but generally think it's trash. Change my mind 8) (/hmu w some recs please).

Economic boom [capitalism :rejoice] followed by sustained economic slump [capitalism :paul]

Also the opening of a large new market for content [home video]. Same reason there was a glut of scifi/fantasy DTV movies in America, except that making a good-looking animated movie is cheaper than a good-looking live-action movie. Of course, there were still plenty of bad-looking anime even during this time. Add in the maturation of a generation of anime nerds raised on 60s and 70s anime that wanted to make their own mark suddenly getting the opportunity and money to experiment. This era died when TV anime started getting really popular [mid-90s, economic slump, TV animation was a lot cheaper, Neon Genesis Evangelion]. The industry is now dominated by people getting paid poverty wages to crank out whatever studios think is most likely to squeeze a few extra Yen out of an infinitesimally small base of otaku.
