I was unfortunately unable to see The Machinist when it was first released due to limited release. I thought despite its low budget, Session 9 was a pretty damn good film and that it showed that Brad Anderson had talent. As so, I've been wanting to see it and - tada! - I finally had the chance.
And it's a pretty damn good tale as well. Brad Anderson has now put himself in rare company in terms of the horror genre. This film, along with his Masters of Horror episode that ranks as Disposable White Guy's and my personal favorite ("Sounds Like", featuring a phone customer service guy with super hearing) has pretty much decided that my butt will be in a theatre seat for any of his future releases. Of all the new guys coming up in horror, he's the only one in my opinion that has managed to put together a string of solid work (Eli Roth, Zombie, Aja, etc. seem to be like two steps forward, one step backward).
And the movie is worth a flyer alone for Bale's awesome performance as he channels a starving Auschwitz prisoner on the verge of mental collapse.

Brad Anderson has a slow and methodical pace to almost all of his work that I can see easily putting off a lot of people. I don't mind a slow pace as long as there is a reason, and Anderson never wastes a minute just to drag out the film. Each scene has a piece of the puzzle that comes together towards the end. Similar to his work on Session 9 and "Sounds Like".

The Machinist is horror? I wouldn't even call Session 9 horror. It was an atmospheric psychological thriller.

Sounds Like was pretty fucking awesome, and the only problem I have with Session 9 is that every single motherfucking Silent Hill fanboy jerkoff has to relate that game series to the movie at least every other fucking sentence that comes out of their mouths. Like TVC, I wouldn't really call Brad Anderson's style horror, it's more like an early David Fincher mindfuck genre.
Somebody needs to let me abuse his Comcast for this movie.

how could anyone infer silent hill references from session 9?
they have absolutely nothing in common.
silent hill is a supernatural thriller, while session 9 is about some douchebag loser who finally loses it.

I think the Silent Hill comparisons come from both things being so dependent on atmosphere. Not to mention that certain things, like the whole discovering of the tapes in the basement and listening to them to advance the story, is reminiscent of a "survival horror" type of scenario.
By the plots and happenings, not like Silent Hill, but they both lay on the atmosphere like delicious, thick peanut butter.
Drinky has my copy of Session 9 now. I will have to check out The Machinist.

Regardless of the slight similarity between the two, it still bugs me when people just feel the need to refer to Session 9 as this grand pubah Silent Hill homage on celluloid. The only thing that you can honestly compare between the two is that Session 9 was pretty amateur, but still enjoyable. That's a pretty common theme with survival horror.

I dunno. I recommend it to Silent Hill fans. It's a better Silent Hill movie than Silent Hill was.

Well yeah, but I mean they could've made a movie about Harry Mason barebacking James Sunderland and slapped the SH copyright on it and it would've been a better movie.
