The new policy’s announcement comes just days after Tumblr was briefly removed from Apple’s iOS App Store over a child pornography incident, but it extends far beyond that matter alone.
Isn’t this the second time Tumblr tried doing this? Surely they realize their site is useless without porn, right?Yeah, they've had all porn and sex related tags removed from the built-in search for ages already.
They started cracking down on accounts and search in the past month but I wouldn’t say ages? Then again I haven’t updated my tumblr app in monthsThey removed tags like sex, dick, etc etc etc from /tagged/ and /search/ a long time ago. I used them to look up porn gif, but after that I've had to Google word + Tumblr for gifs searches.

Good luck on them trying to detect all billion porn blogs and posts already there.

This is technologically feasible now to about 90-99% accuracy. (https://www.adityaananthram.com/comparison-of-the-best-nsfw-image-moderation-apis-2018/)
In fact, machine learning has gotten so good at detecting dicks and nips that you can now munge any picture through an AI to add cocks, vag, and assholes. (:nsfw, obviously) (https://open_nsfw.gitlab.io/)
These days, if a social network doesn't want you to post nudes/porn, they can reasonably reject it on upload about 90%+ of the time -- automatically. To say nothing if it doesn't already exist in their DB of porn and they just have to check the hash (which works closer to 99% of the time.)
Edit- Really the precursor to all this was YouTube's ContentID. Literal definition of a double-edged sword I suppose.
Are you guys really going to miss 5fps 320 X 240px gifs that are somehow 300MB each?Yes

JESUS FUCK MY DICK IS ALREADY THROBBING SAD PRECUM TEARS JUST THINKING OF ALL THE LOADS I'M NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO BLOW.
WHAT'S THE ANSWER HERE, PEOPLE? I GET THAT REDDIT MIGHT BE GOOD BUT I LIKED THE MIX OF CURATION V ROLLING THE DICE AT TUMBLR.
ALSO DEC 17 IS THE DAY MY DAD DIED. DAD AND PORN DYING ON THE SAME DAY. OW MY DICK.
This is it, Cindi. This is what we've been stockpiling weapons for. We got to take it back from The Man. We need to take the porno back. We need our weird shit, not that consumer-grade crap. I'll never touch myself to that shit.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqkMsXcHQYg
I just spent like 15 minutes re-writing American Pie to be about this national tragedy. I may have to do the full song. The Day the Porno Died, man.
Is Tom Fulp (right?) still the head of Nrwgrounds? Never met him, but he's a friend of an IRL childhood friend. Or was. I haven't talked to them in like 5 years. She went kinda crazy.
Re: everyone moving to Newgrounds.spoiler (click to show/hide)Updated my Newgrounds account from 2007 and intend to start using the site much more. :rejoice
Became a supporter to change me name too. :jawalrus
So glad that not only is NG still around but that it's stayed true to itself all this time. :)
I had another account from '05 I could have updated, but not sure if I want my current self to be connected to it. :P
I always wanted to get into DeviantArt but the I never really cared for the site (felt too "heavy") and I didn't really get into "community" either... NG feels like home in comparison.
I don't even really post much stuff, but I fucking love the indie artist spirit of these kinds of sites, and I'm totally OK with NG taking whatever mantle Tumblr had for this stuff.[close]
Is just funny to me that it was banning porn what killed Tumblr. Just dunno, the Tumblr generation seems to be one of contradictions.

Yeah and they still like porn. I’m not seeing the contradiction.
Most of the porn on tumblr is user curated.
I have many fetishes.
But isn't newgrounds a flash site? Weird place to go to for stills and gifs. :thinking

the internet really sucks ass
Porn may end up on Twitter for a while before it gets big and Twitter pulls a Tumblr. If anything, three months ago Twitter was by far the more likely choice for which of the two would start being super puritanical about porn. What's the harm in just doing an account on each? It's free anyway.
Newgrounds is still a private, founder-owned company, that has already survived for 20+ years without Google Ads (and the rest of the major, most-profitable anti-NSFW ad networks) because it hasn't budged on adult content since it began, and likely never will.
Twitter? You're rolling the same dice you rolled with Tumblr. Just sayin'.

hey hopefully ur right & they continue on into oblivion bc outside of the porn tumblr was a good support structure for some of my friends through the communities built there, butcan u imagine being this ignorant of what ur own site is
like, deadass thats mostly what people used tumblr for, whether they admitted to it or not, that and rp blogs (which mostly devolved into porn anyways so)
I'm sure your "like deadass" comment is more accurate than the server stats they have. (I read porn was 11% of Tumblr in one article.. and it's the 11% of Tumblr they can't put advertising on.. so yeah, I'm sure it will "kill them" to remove it!)

Look I'm not arguing that there couldn't be a domino effect; but most of Tumblr wasn't porn.. and ALL of the profitable part of Tumblr wasn't porn.I didnt know abt their app being removed- all the info I get is second-hand from friends who use the site constantly (&I dont think they knew that was the reason either? I'll have to ask-) but yea in that case seems like they were put between a rock & a hard place, now i feel bad for them
Granted you cut off that 11% and some of the 89% will follow..
.. but their app got removed from the iOS app store, that probably reprsents a HUGE portion of their revenue.. so they were likely "dead" either way, however removing porn to try to get back on the app store is probably the better business decision.
I mean..there's porn to find everywhere though ??? Who even uses tumblrFirst they came for Tumblr and I did not speak because I didn't fap to Tumblr....

following this announcement everyone i knew abandoned tumblr & went to twitter/mastodon/discord in large numbers, entire communities of various types said "nah fuck this we're out" so who knows, ive been wrong before, but like all the blogs i followed that were porn or not are dead now, so idk

What percentage of users are part of the backlash?
What percentage of users are part of the backlash?
This study was based on the behavior of 130 million users, about half of Tumblr's entire user base. Of that number, "adult content consumers are 22 percent of our sample," the study said. "At the time of the study, roughly 30 million active accounts were consuming adult content, either re-sharing it or following the accounts of those producers," Luca Aiello, one of the study's authors and now a senior research scientist at Nokia Bell Labs told Motherboard in an email. "I expect this audience to experience a noticeable drop in engagement: some of them will just churn out, many of them will likely reduce considerably the time spent on the platform."
Another 28 percent, or roughly 40 million users, encountered pornography unintentionally on Tumblr. That means they didn't seek out the porn, but they followed someone who pushed it into their feed. "The extent of this exposure is hard to estimate but it's probably not major," Aiello said. "Therefore, I believe some people in this segments would be happy to have a cleaner Tumblr feed but I don't expect a significant lift in their engagement, overall." Crucially, the study found that Tumblr's userbase was more female than many social networks ("we estimate that the average user age is 26 and 72 percent of the users are female," they wrote.) They found that these demographics held up between porn consumers and non porn consumers on the site, and that, in fact, young women between the ages of 20-25 were consuming porn on the site at a higher rate than young men. This means that Tumblr's crackdown will likely disproportionately affect women porn consumers.
fuck you timu. fuck you, fuck your house, fuck your family, fuck your life, fuck you forever.
Let me break it down for you all.As a director for a data consulting firm, I confirm Kingv's findings as sound.
Fact 1: everybody I know uses tumblr for porn
Simple math: they are going to lose 100% of their users.

It's hard to show love on twitter because if you don't want to make an alt account ppl really frown on your likes being filled with big anime tiddies or ppl hanging upside down or some weird venom like creature spit sucking down on someones throat

According to CNN, Verizon previously claimed that Oath’s brand value including a goodwill valuation (and not assets) was $4.8 billion.
...Verizon’s disclosure lowered that to $200 million, reducing Oath’s value by half when $5 billion in remaining assets are accounted for.
Advertising is key to Verizon’s plans for Oath. Since Verizon is a home Internet provider and the largest wireless carrier in the US, its access to Internet subscribers’ browsing histories could help boost the Yahoo/AOL advertising business. The Republican-led Congress and President Donald Trump recently wiped out rules that would have made it harder for ISPs to use their customers’ browsing history to serve personalized advertising.
https://twitter.com/somospostpc/status/1161024458460712962Seems like the porn thing barely factors in the whole ordeal, tbh.
Really depends where you start from.
If you start from where Verizon acquired it, it seems like a bad deal.
Marissa Meyer might be one of the worst modern ceos.
I mean, WordPress.com lets you have "mature" blogs... just no porn.Who the fuck uses blogger nowadays though? That's where the Youtube analogy falls flat i'd say.
It's a minor miracle that Blogger of all things is the only big boy blog platform where you can still post hard dong. (Especially since they did try the Tumblr playbook of trying to ban porn, but even Google saw how asinine that would be so long after the fact. Google: 1, Verizon -29,238)
Like, imagine if you could straight up post amateur porn on YouTube, and it was totally cool as long as you marked your channel as AO. :lol That's kinda what the situation with Blogger is right now.
Well, yes, that's true. If Blogger were as popular as say Twitter, there would be a lot more pressure to remove adult content. Which is why it's encouraging (for now...) that Twitter allows it.I think it's just a matter of time before it's banned from it too.
