activision sucks
but not nearly as much as destiny
-
I bought Destiny 2 at 50% off and it was still a bad deal cause it was free a fee months later. Why would I ever buy this crap again?
activision sucks

Yeah and I bet Destiny numbers are terribad if they are letting them go like this
Hope I can remove Destiny from the Blizz launcher now
-
Destiny 2 was such a total disaster that Activision probably kicked Bungie out of bed and told them they could keep the loose change.

The thing is, a lot of the problems with Destiny were with the stupid attempt at monetization.
The gameplay was great, the art direction was cool, the game ran well... if they had made a normal FPS-RPG hybrid with coop, it would've been a great game, but they had to be all weird about it.
Maybe now they got their shot at it.
Scale it back, focus on what matters.

If there is a category for most disappointing game this Gen, Destiny 2 would win this with flying colors.

I hope they can do something worthwhile now with the IP. Though they did fuck it up themselves for the most part.

Star Ocean 5 for me :(

Being fair to Lager's gรณwnosลupek: Spider-man isn't on #5-10 yet.
You're right about the other two though.

If anything, this would at least make Halo/IP better than it has been under 343/Frankie.

The reporting on this is pretty funny, I've yet to see an outlet realize that the original ten year deal signed in 2010 was probably coming up for extension discussions.
They essentially just agreed to let it expire with no penalty for Bungie not releasing the three games remaining on the deal before 2020. Likely because despite this and all the many issues, they probably made more off Destiny 1 and 2 than projected.
-
To bring over from the Destiny 2 thread:
Also the original deal called for four Destiny games along with four expansion packs through 2020. With various DLCs inbetween.
Original Plan was:
Destiny - Fall 2013
Expansion - Fall 2014
Destiny 2 - Fall 2015
Expansion - Fall 2016
Destiny 3 - Fall 2017
Expansion - Fall 2018
Destiny 4 - Fall 2019
Expansion - Fall 2020
edit: here's the contract: http://documents.latimes.com/bungie-activision-contract/
To compare what actually happened
Destiny - Fall 2014
Destiny expansion 1 - Fall 2015
Destiny expansion 2 - Fall 2016
Destiny 2 - Fall 2017
Destiny 2 expansion - Fall 2018
Huh, Bungie was supposed to develop a prototype "Action-Shooter Game" for Activision termed "Marathon" after "Destiny Game" related income surpassed $375 million.
Each year Bungie's employees got UP TO TWO COPIES of other Activision published products! :omg
And Jason Schrierer's piece on how they basically didn't start creating the first game until 2013: https://kotaku.com/the-messy-true-story-behind-the-making-of-destiny-1737556731

Activision had indicated that after The Taken King that they had already made their side of the projected investment back. Probably one reason they decided to discount/give away 2 so quickly.

Microsoft: "The covenant all look like Mitch McConell and Master Chief has lost all his guns and keeps making speeches about feminism. Bungie can you sort this?"
-
skimming that contract, activision has first right of negotiation on any future destiny content. is that normal for a a partnership like this?

Sure. What's the downside for either side really? :thinking

yeah, when they've funded the IP from scratch but are agreeing not to own the IP this is highly traditional, that's why you get a lot of IP kludges both not only in gaming but very often in Hollywood
a lot of those film sequels/reboots you hear about being worked on that suddenly disappear for a decade or more are often due to this kind of situation, a studio will use its right of first refusal to "acquire" the film, then can it because even though they've been burned on the IP, they don't want anyone else to have it...Spider-Man was this way until Sony grabbed it and sorta is this way again regarding his MCU appearances, Ghost Rider I believe exists in this nebulous situation where the owner would never again want to make those after the Nic Cage films, but they don't want them to revert to Marvel either out of fear that it might work out for them
gaming is a bit different because a large segment of gamers in general are so well tuned in to the developers versus merely the franchises, you get some of that with actors/directors in films, but it's far more niche, way more people know about BUNGIE or BIOWARE or VOLITION or whoever that they have a bit more leverage than directors often do (just look at everything del Toro attempts to make)
one other way gaming is unique is a situation like where Sierra gets bought by somebody and then goes defunct, or Interplay where the whole company goes defunct except for a file cabinet full of IPs somewhere...Hollywood has much more of a system in place to "free" these rights back up whereas gaming is more likely to just go "okay, it's a SPIRITUAL SEQUEL"
in this case, Activision probably does not want Bungie taking Destiny to EA or Ubisoft, but if Bungie goes back to Microsoft or tries something with THQ Nordic or other smaller publisher, Activision may just ask for a small cut of royalties to end the first right of refusal
all of this is without me rechecking the contract to see if that right expires with the agreement, often it's written to be perpetual

IIRC, Bungie demanded to keep the Destiny IP because they regretted letting Microsoft buy Bungie and thus be the owners of Halo from the start. And Activision was more okay with that and offered more funding than EA since EA had a similar deal in the works for Respawn.
That side deal EA was making with Respawn is why we even know every single thing about Bungie's deal with Activision. It was introduced as evidence in the trial. (Which is why everyone assumed Respawn's original deal with EA looked very similar just with different figures. But now that's all irrelevant since they sold the company to EA.)

Gears has 5 games in 10 years
Halo has 7 in 14 years
Forza has 11 in 13 years
God of War has 4 in 13
Yeah its totally the same ::)

I count eight God of War games? ???
Also 11 Halo games.
In none of the cases did I count remasters or collections. Which I think Philip was alluding to especially with mentioning SOTC.

Im not counting things like Halo Wars or God War psp

You didn't count this either.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_War:_Ascension
It is the seventh installment in the God of War series and prequel to the entire series.

After all the dust has settled Vince really came out the winner out of this one.
Half a billion for his studio and more or less EA's main studio after Henig blew herself up, sutherland drained DICE and Visceral slowly degraded.
