Despite my tendencies to do stupid shit, I lead a relatively normal life. Nothing too out of the ordinary.
There are days where I just don’t go on the internet, but when I go back, the strangeness of the fact that I regularly browse/post on different discussion boards hits me. I’ve never met someone else IRL who does it, and on the rare occasion a friend/family member sees me looking at one on my phone, I just say it’s Reddit or something (because that’s at least somewhat mainstream nowadays).
Not knocking forums, but I just find it so weird that I’m the type of person that posts on them. At least on The Bore, most of you seem normal. I could never really see myself opening up about it IRL for some reason. Anyone else have similar experiences?

I mean, there are plenty of boards with very distinct and useful purposes, it's not just limited to gaming weirdos and those poking fun at them. I know a few people who use them for photography hardware impressions and discussion for example.
Even that aside it's just another form of shooting the shit with people, or browsing for mental masturbation. Takes on similar forms whether it's a forum, live chat, social media, etc.

I don’t know enough about what other people use Discord for to judge. Everything I know about Discord serves a specific purpose. Forums kinda just exist; there probably isn’t any singular reason you log in. You kinda just do it to check up on things and add your own thoughts.

Right and maybe I’m veering off my point a little. I guess I’m more just like “I find it irregular how big a role forums play in my life but I almost never acknowledge it to anyone”. The other quote in this post kinda makes it seem like I’m saying forums are pointless, which I don’t think. It’s just hard for me to frame their purpose in my own life to others. Saying “I talk to strangers online about random stuff” makes me uncomfortable for some reason

I've posted on forums since my late teens and yeah it's a weird bubble. Also very much on its way to obsolescence, I'd suspect, especially old style ones. I'd wager communities like the Bore, and this sort of humour / drama is on the way out as well.

I've always viewed it as a creative writing outlet that others share in. There's no risk involved because you won't meet the people reading it (unless you seek them out).
In a way, it's a healthier form of 'keeping a journal'.

this is a splinter forum of a splinter forum that’s more than a year removed from losing most of its user base. the people on thebore are extremely online in a way that normal people couldn’t recognize. not to mention that every forum except 4chan has been in decline for about the past 5 years or so. The normal weirdos all moved to twitter or reddit

I like forums because it's easy to pick what to engage with, it's also easy to solicit questions and opinions about more obscure topics. I feel a discord would be too fast paced and the socials aren't really a place for more niche discussions/too clouded with shitty politics or baby pics and other "normie on the internet" topics.

Talked to a guy in person yesterday for the first time , who I met on a message board over 10 years ago. He went 'message boards, what a weird fucking time when we posted on those'. I just agreed not wanting to reveal I am still a weirdo
