you might think this is about his general commadante tankie aesthetic and che guevara amp while like, being a corporate tool, man, but you'd be wrong.
this is about the take the power back solo.
cast your ears to two minutes fifty into this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqkMsXcHQYg
what a rip. the dude kills it. but who is the dude?
i'm having a bad time with this because i've always stood up for tommy when people say he leans too hard on his effects and has little musicianship beyond basic blues riffs without them, i point them to the take the power back solo. it's clean, fast, full of little bits of modal interchange and generally a great showcase for his chops. comes across completely effortless too.
i decided to look up some live versions to see how he plays it, but realised that he must've completely changed it over the years because more recent versions are nothing like the album version. then i found a live version from '92 and instead of the abolute feat of technical artistry on the record, he's already doing his nonesense effect soup chromatic bollocks with bits of melody thrown in. it's a cool sound tom, it's made your name, but this was supposed to be your one proper solo.
i went through videos of "TOM MORELLO'S BEST RIPS" and all of them are either about 4 grades below the difficulty of the solo he wrote 25 years ago. apparently he's never played anything like it since, he just got up that morning and went into the studio and burned through a bit of playing on another planet to anything else he'd ever play thereafter, live or on record.
the other possibility is that with it being '92 and shred was still very much alive, some sony bigwig while being rimmed by an alsation made the call that this record needs a rip somewhere on it or none of those hair metal goobs aren't going to go with it, and called in a gun for hire to do a black ops solo, like a shred assassin sworn to secrecy.
maybe this is why tom has been projecting so hard all these years. it must be eating him up inside.
i'd love to be wrong so i'm starting a hashtag #gettomtoplaythetakethepowerbacksoloproperlyorheisgetting#cancelled
prove me wrong tom (i know you're reading this)

I think that solo is garbage, sorry mate. When he is playing those fast runs he is having a hard time staying in key and it's completely unmelodic. He has done well by sticking to the gimmicky stuff, it suits him better. Playing to his strengths and all that. Killer rythm player though.
-
that's exactly the kind of atonal random chromatic bollocks i was talking about. literally just slapping your fingers against random frets while running it through the first patch you made on your twenty quid zoom multi effects station which has literally every setting maxed out.
-
^ out of tune and out of key. Stay mad, bitch.
-
big fan of springsteen visbily taking a shit while he just about gets through four repeating notes.
-
Add tone deafness to the list of Glen's shortcomings.
-
"extremely melodic phrases"
:crowdlaff
find a good lead player to listen to, you tasteless boor
-
he has some gentle melodic phrasing in the solo earlier on, i prefer it but it's nothing out of this world, before falling back to his WEEELY WEELY alamo.
TTPB solo is on another level.
-
always wanted to recreate musicianforums rageposting on the bore.
-
Rage is some of the most boring ass shit ever made. There was a time for it, and Zack got out in time. Tom and the rest stayed around though, and still think they're young cool rebels, when showing Fuck Trump written on the back of their equipment at festivals full of people in their 20's.
Also Audioslave sucked ass, and Chris Cornell trying to do killing in the name of, should be enough reasons for them to never be allowed on stage again. Even Avril Lavigne live was better than that.
-
the solo i posted is great because it's not tom morello, it's some jobber whose probably now serving tom his starbucks.
the solo you posted is a mix of graddad's last shred and random spazzing. it's a very glen thing to think it's some kind of mathematical jazz deep dive, though.
tom even said himself that the reason he developed that style is that he couldn't play anything like the permed guitar eldars of shrapnel records.
-
Whatever you say Glen :D
-
now DMB, that's quality musicanship.
-
According to the filler media maybe.

The solo you're posted is pretty much Babby's First Shred though. It's like he just got done watching a Paul Gilbert instructional video and tried to paste some guitar exercises on the backing track, don't @me

i remember reading about him raging out because he's always the victim in the "it's about what notes you play, not how many you play, dave gilmour can say more with one note than MAB could with 100" addage.

this is how nu metal happened.
woodstock 99 was your fault.

actually worth it for the somoan granny killing it on drums and numerous crane shots of saggy white trash titty,
-
You can play fast with good phrasing, or you can play fast with generic phrasing; that's literally the entire difference.
tom morello can't.

Fatboy Slim were there, so it wasnt all bad.

I'm a huge RATM fan (Zach De La Rocha's dumbassery as well) but I never really saw putting Tom Morello that high on guitarist lists. I agree with Agra's take for the most part.
Real recognize real. 8)

I have that on VHS

As a fan of three out of the four bands involved (STP is boring af) I couldn't get hyped for it even then. So called "superbands" has always been a flawed concept.
I've been cheated to many times with super bands. Yet I keep hoping and believing like the dumb ass I am

by that i mean they released a greatest hits called "raking it in".

if this was school i'd throw an eraser at the back of your head.

Edit: Morello's Like A Stone solo from the first Audioslave album is also very well constructed, IMO, though it's not anything approximating a technical marvel.
much like you don't have anything aproximating a brain

The neat solo in Killing in the Name of is mainly achieved via using an octave pedal. Tom was always more of a neat sound/textural guy than a top tier shredder imo. Which makes sense for the times in which Rage happened.
:cac
Yeah, Tom's not white but this is a very white people thread.

Tosin Abasi though

Playing guitar in 2019 :girlaff
-
Tosin Abasi though
very big meh from me dawg. He's technically great, just doesn't move me. The coolest thing I've seen him do was when I saw him and Nuno play Physical Education on the Generation Axe tour. Great song. I also saw him with his first band Reflux, which was sort of a tech-core band, before he was well known at all. I still have the CD somewhere.
:snob
And Glen give it a rest, nobody got time for your dusty ass.

tosin is from the new school of well groomed, polite young men who are technically impeccable just don't get it.
there's no rawness or spontaneous energy there. it's all too programmed.
i like my shredders to be chaotic playboy wizards who die in a plane crash.
-
do people go to live DJ "gigs"?
do you say "DJ daterape is playing here tonight, i'm going to go see him" then stand there watching him while he's basically the sound guy for his own records on stage?

Mhhmm, right, right. And he straps his guitar all the way up to his upper chest.

boring technically and hidden under 'having feeling' solos :nope
programmed/math solos. :ohyeah
-
i remember going to a music BTEC rehearsal once and it was the first time a class had a new teacher, one of the kids had a knock off strandberg and the teacher wasn't having it "the first thing you need to go and do is buy a proper guitar".
he then made them play 12 bar blues non stop for two years.
-
Yikes, blocking Mr. Gillhaney

i'm all for aspergic mathmatical lunancy, but there's got to be something in there though. like the difference between some ridiculous tech death solo played in a church wearing cowls and shit or someone making something intricate for their well produced youtube channel with their modelling amp settings exlusively for patreon subscribers.
-
I do agree. I think Animals as Leaders falls under having something in there though.

the guitar solo in Neurotica is my favorite robotic machine-like solo.

Agra, can you stop evoking people like Hendrix and Prince? I just want to despise you.
why?

i love that in the 80s even if you were a pop/soul musician for the most part you just absorbed shredding chops through cultural osmosis.

counterpoint, Rick Graham is fucking fantastic. Too bad he focuses mostly on instruction, as there's not much money in putting out instrumental rock nowadays.

I go to live dj gigs a few times a year, of course. I remember the time I went to see In Flames/Iced Earth with some friends from college and unbeknownst to me, Sasha and Digweed were playing across the hall (didn't wanna ditch my friends to try to sneak in)... the lead singer of Iced Earth was wondering why the atmosphere in their room was so muted while the people across the hall were going crazy...

They do and having been dragged to a few, it is awful.

headwalk (and whever else is into guitars), you should really check out Plini if you haven't. He's a guy who prioritizes songwriting, melody and catchiness over technique (not that he doesn't have great technique). It's like an evolution of Vai and Satriani with a bit of djent, Cynic, Dream Theater and other prog/metal movements from the past couple of decades.
Rick Beato does a great job highlighting what makes him such a special guitar player and song writer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW_ZgvKA63Y
of course he picked one of Plini's best songs
