Perfect Blue (dir. Satoshi Kon)

It was hard to choose just one Satoshi Kon film to represent his body of work and why I'm a fan of it, but at the end of the day it has to be the one with the most straightforward story and mainstream appeal: Perfect Blue. Many people drew similarities to Darren Aronofsky's The Black Swan, which came out 13 years later, but it lost the zanier edge of Kon's masterwork, among many other important details -- not to mention the stunning, at-times mindbending animation.

The Blair Witch Project (dir. Eduardo Sánchez)

I appreciate this film immensely, and still enjoy rewatching it every October. A testament to independent filmmaking and the power of editing, it's still somewhat difficult for me to explain its appeal outside those aspects. I just love this movie, man, and it's inspiring to me in the same way Clerks was inspiring to so many others.

Also despite kinda knowing people's tastes it's still interesting to see what people choose when they're forced to narrow it to a small set.

I'd make an argument for FWWM being Lynch at his best, but i'd be down with The Return or Mulholland Dr. as well (or Blue Velvet).

Man FWWM is up there too... so hard to choose. I guess I watched MD first so it had more of an impact to me, but I can absolutely seeing FWWM having the same effect on someone.

Actually MD was also my first Lynch (if we don't count Dune and Elephant Man, but i was a little kid then), when i was a teen, and it blew my mind.

I used to listen to the Love Theme non-stop back then.

It helped that i didn't really have anyone to look up to in terms of cinema taste and didn't use the internet much, so every "discovery", however obvious in retrospect, seemed 10 times as extraordinary, 'cause i had never heard of these movies from anyone.

It might not be true anymore (Scott Adkins has been very prolific) but until 10 to 15 years ago Bloodsport was legitimately one of the best Western "Martial Arts" films. Look up the IMDB for the director of that (Newt Arnold), the guy has an all star pedigree as an assistant director. The whole Frank Dux / Kumite / Sports Tournament story (no matter how bullshit it is) makes for an engrossing narrative backbone and elevates this much higher than standard JCVD fare even if the plot is otherwise pretty by the numbers for the Muscles from Brussels. Performers are good, memorable even if stereotypical, and the fight scenes are more than decent.

And that OST :delicious
