I thought I read that Astral Chain had a kind of dual stick control thing going on?  This is not really the case, except in one specific instance.  Game play is set up like this:

Left stick: Move/Run
Right stick: Camera/lock-on (and switch targets)
D-pad: Switch between baton or gun
B: Dodge (You can do "perfect dodges" which are similar to activating witch time in Bayonetta)
+: Turn on AR-style info system.  Gives you enemy health read-outs and NPC bios and such.
ZR: Attack
ZL: Summon your Legion (left stick and ZL will tell the Legion what directions to go in.  You can also use it to call it back to you.)
R: Put Legion away (you can only leave it out for a certain amount of time before it "overheats" and needs a recharge)

If you hold ZL down and use the right stick, you can control the Legion's movement directly.  This can be used to make it run around an enemy and wrap it up in the chains, freezing it in place and letting you freely beat the shit out of it for a period of time.

You can also use ZL and the left stick to send the Legion shooting out towards enemies who are about to charging at you.  If you time this right, you'll knock the enemy of the charge and counter it.

So it really isn't as crazy as some of the videos might make the game play seem- you're controlling your own character 99% of the time and the Legion just helps you beat the shit out of everyone.

The game also offers a babby-mode that will play itself for you, like Bayonetta 2 did, if you just want to see the story.  Oh, and you can go to your locker at the station and change up your character's appearance at any time.  Speaking of appearances, the character designs really scream "Masakazu Katsura."  Many of the characters look like they came right out of Double Decker! Doug & Kirill and your Legion looks like armor from Tiger & Bunny, lol.

Your character is a silent protagonist- but your brother talks.  Wondering if you choose a male character...do you still have a brother, or does he get changed to the sister, who then has his speaking role? :thinking

Kinda weird they don't just have them both talk, then.  :lol

So this is more an ARPG with a detailed story than a stage based hack and slash? That's interesting...

I love the aesthetic, it reminds me of a mid 90's game with that cyberpunk Tokyo style, I get Burning Rangers vibes for some reason...

This game just keeps getting better and better.  It seems simplistic when you first start it, but they keep on introducing new things you can do during fights!

I'm not sure if I'd call it an action-RPG.  It's a story-heavy action game with very light RPG elements- progression is kind of Bayonetta style, where you have story stuff/investigations/cop stuff, then get into a fight in a small area, rinse, repeat, but with the police station inbetween levels.  It also keeps introducing new game play and upgrade stuff so maybe by the time this is done, it will be an RPG, lol.

Was walking around the base and got a camera for photo mode.  You can take selfies with different poses, lmao.

Would say that the the prologue and first two levels are akin to the "intro" to the game and it won't even really begin to show you what you can start doing with your first Legion until you get to that point.

I think this is already on my GOTY list.

Sounds like CA type progression. Interesting for what was advertised as a pseudo Nier Automata-esque JRPG.

One thing that may change things up- on one level, there were things inaccessible to me because you need a certain Legion type equipped to access/destroy them.  Unsure if that means it gets to a point where you can start freely going back to levels or if it's just stuff to replay levels for.

There’s stuff to like, but I think this game blows on Switch.

In the training room you have to fight enemies, and even with one enemy  it’s dropping to about 10 FPS on my system w/ combo dropping.

Shit feels bad at times, but it’s still very interesting

That shouldn't be happening.  Maybe restart your system?  It sticks very close to 30 fps and has a dynamic resolution.

Maybe you're mistaking fucked up frame time for low framerate. It never hit low 10 or even low 20s on my end.

Post by: bork on August 31, 2019, 09:26:13 AM
Also don't know how far along you are, but you don't need to be using that slash attack unless it's to destroy enemies with their own "chains" attached to each other.  You're going to get more abilities and attacks as you keep going.

It doesn't go that low, period.  Has some dips to the mid 20s occasionally, but is generally a pretty stable 30 fps.

Whether or not DF experienced it or not doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t be experienced  ???

I can say with absolute certainty that it did hit the very low 10s on the first expert training mission when I encountered the last boss in portable mode.

I entered Iris mode as I recently gained the ability to scan in enemies (and wanted to see a health bar.) Swooping the camera around absolutely tanked the frame rate. It was at this point that the game didn’t even register my button press to hit, and upon trying to slash an enemy out of attack as recently learned, the mode did not pop up as I exited out of Iris.

Additionally, arenas with multiple higher tiered enemies absolutely are dropping frames and it’s far from what I’d call a stable 30.

Bruh- nobody else is mentioning this.  :lol  It hasn't done anything like this to me.

Other action games like Devil May Cry almost suffer from this fate, except they save themselves with the addition of a style gauge which judges and rewards you based on each combat encounter.

So does this game.  Maybe don't play in baby mode?  :doge

Started this a bit last night. It’s impressively good looking for a switch game. Even on the TV. While I’m sure it could look better on a PS4, there are plenty of games on PS4 that don’t.

Yeah, the story is charming even if is cliche as hell and there is just like three genuinely cool characters (and those don’t include Akira and Lappy/Marie). Maybe is because the story takes itself so seriously while not being actually that ridiculous compared with other Platinum Games. Is weird.

People are going to push Marie/Lappy hard, but Max and Kyle are the best characters, cliche as they are.

I finished file 3, and am starting to get how this is played.

I’m surprised how long the missions are. It’s sort of unusual for a platinum game since most of them have very bite sized missions. I sat down to do one mission and it took me like 75 minutes. I’d jump into the astral plane and go “ok I’ll fight this boss and it’s done” then I’d jump out, and fight another boss, and then back in and fight a third boss. And that’s like the 3rd mission.

And I clearly missed a lot because I only got like half of the rankings.

I was expecting it to be more like Bayonetta, action levels broken up by cutscenes, so it was a nice surprise to see that there was a lot more to it.

I was expecting it to be more like Bayonetta, action levels broken up by cutscenes, so it was a nice surprise to see that there was a lot more to it.

I’m starting to think of each file as it’s own mini storyline. It’s an interesting structure.

I definitely enjoy the combat but am sort of mixed on the investigation piece. They are sort of like the detective mode in Arkham, but not as polished and longer.

It’s definitely really unique for Platinum, whose games I often feel are very samey feeling (even though I like them a lot). This plays very uniquely to their other games.

Only thing I’m sort of confused on is how best to fight bigger enemies. The smaller guys get stunlocked as you unload on them, but the bigger guys don’t and have these area of attack moves. I haven’t quite worked out if I have invincibility frames in my dodge that I need to take advantage of and rush them down like Bayonetta and my timing is just not right, or if the mechanics are different.

I can see how that’d be useful.

The game really started to grab me once I realized how the jump kick attacks and sync attack work where you can wrap multiple enemies and hit them all.

Before that it seemed too simple

This game is fucking bananas. God damn.

Finally got to it this weekend.

Each file is extremely meaty and varied. Combat really grew on me after being confusing as fuck in the beginning. Characters are really fun with great designs (and nice jugs :rash). And the music is just :lawd

It’s Platinum so I figured I’d like it, but I didn’t expect to like it this much. I’m partway through File 5 and I’m already 14 hours played, and there’s apparently 12 files? Crazy stuff.

Finished File 8 last night.

What the fuck were they thinking with this lol?

Badly controlling mini games. Mini games that control fine, but have ridiculously tight scoring. Stealth/tailing missions. Box pushing puzzles. Forced 10 minute platforming/puzzle section. Enemy gauntlets. Even stuff like item boxes being placed in dumb locations just to exploit the fact that there’s no jump/vault button.

Fucking insanity.

Like I still had fun, but man was it exhausting. Hopefully the last few files don’t shit the bed like this.

Finished it yesterday. Darn good game. Took me around 38 hours to finish the main story along with any case I could find along the way. Some bloat here and there, but generally a pretty meaty experience. Kept introducing new enemy/types variations to the very end (including in side quests!).

I have far too many games in my backlog or just shit I want to replay to bother too much with File 12 right now (only saw the epilogue and talked to the folx around the station). Will try and get back to it at some point in the next 20 years and finish up all the orders.

Hope this gets a sequel.

In a perfect world they'd have more budget to flush out the explorable areas a bit but given Platinum was apparently teetering on the edge after ScaleBound was cancelled, I'm just grateful we got this game at all. Definitely in my top 5 for the year.  :like
