we have an open plan but i moved myself right the fuck off into the corner and built a wall, yesterday a dude came to sit next to me and proceeded to chat for 8 hours with me getting no work done, why is this still a thing?
-
Yup we do. It works pretty well because we have about 12 well motivated employees. We also made sure that the design section is as far away from the administration as possible.
It's sort of necessary in a creative field where you want a lot of interaction between the designers and the developers.
For most big companies this is just a cost cutting measure and it doesn't work at all though. Recently I went to a big corporation with this set-up.
Everyone walked around the building for 30 minutes trying to find a spot.
They also had meeting rooms which were about the size of 1 cubicle and could barely fit 4 chairs :doge
If you left to make a call you had to do that in the designated 'telephone area' or a meeting room as to not disturb the others but that meant that you had to abandon your work space so someone else could use it.
So after a 5 minute call people would spend another 30 minutes trying to find a new spot to work because the telephone area's were in a different part of the building.
Some of the people we worked with had just moved their desks to an empty office and basically made that their own office. :lol
It was corporate hell, so I'm not surprised the company literally doesn't get anything done anymore.
All the walls were painted in this weird purple color too and they barely had any windows in some places. It was awful.

Open office plans is the worst management fad. It causes a huge loss in productivity.
I currently share a large room with three other people. It works fine since no one answers calls in the room and if we have a visitor then we try to meet them in the lounge area outside.

Other types of offices exist?
my old place had those office space style cubicles, worked well for me
-
to a europoor who has only worked in open plan offices where you have no barrier between you and other people's boring shit, cubicles always looked really comfy. like a little fort you made yourself.
-
yes and it's insufferable without headphones. Even with them it's terrible

Dat remote life :ohyeah

Yep. Can't stand it. Luckily, sound-canceling headphones exists.

only having your own office cause it's also the storage space for a bunch of tech stuff :gloomy

There are barriers up between people but not really whole cubes. It wasn't too bad since most of the people in my area were pretty quiet, but they recently did a lot of shuffling around of desks and now it's super loud.

Nice stealthbrag about having friends irl
-
We tried it in a single department and floor of a building. It’s been a disaster and they begged for personal space back and cubicles. They even got the full package - TV’s, ping pong tables and all that stupid shit.

there's this one lady that sits about three spaces away from me that's constantly on the phone with personal business, her life is a fucking mess and she's loud as fuck

lol I had this and it was nice but I would always have some youtube video or some shit up on a different screen so I felt judged whenever someone came in for something.
Currently have an open office but with designated desks, idk if that makes it not an open office. All of our meeting rooms have glass walls and everyone can hear all the conversations in the room so it's a pretty distracting environment.

oh god, marvel movie bullshit was my open office hell

The lady in the next cube is always on the phone with her daughter talking about god's plan for her. And if she does something that's not part of god's plan, it's ok because god will adapt.
Sometimes I have to get up and walk away so she doesn't hear me laughing.

Yes, but it's because we share a nice corner office with great views- and there's usually only 1-3 people in the room at a time...four max. Working at home most of the week is great.

Yes and its fucking terrible. We have this clown show "Creative services" team that is full of loud as fuck morons that I can hear from the other side of the office. Open office plans cause me no end of rage.
