Title: Going to Chicago (This Upcoming Last Week of January)
Post by: 213372bu on October 10, 2019, 09:04:22 PM
Anyone familiar with area have any idea how many days is good for the city? I’ve heard some bad impressions from friends, but I did want to field some experiences or advice from any that may have been. It’ll also be my first time (potentially) solo traveling to a place in ~12F weather with snow storms, aside from layering is there any tips with dealing with that mess?

Muchos Gracias,
Your Phriend 213372bu

3 days is fine. Ask me some questions about some things in a PM if you want once it gets closer to the time you show up. There might be something specific going on. Food, events, sights. Public transportation is good even in the winter.

Plenty of good air bnb in Chicago. Now if you are doing a hotel, might as well be in downtown. If you do air bnb it's probably gonna be cheap outside of downtown.

North of downtown is a good safe spot for the most part. West has its patches. Logan Square/Wicker Park is still good. DO NOT go to East Garfield. for a beginner don't bother with Humbolt Park. That can be sketchy depending on what part you are in. I also wouldn't bother going south of Pilsen/China Town.

You are going to the Rosemont theater which is on the Blue Line (metro). Soooo maybe try to be somewhere vaguely close to it. Not an issue if downtown as all metro trains go downtown anyway.

Go visit the aquarium and planetarium.

River North is perfect.  You will either walk a little downtown and hop on the blue line or I think hop on the red line and transfer to the blue line.

Rosemont Theater is far for all of us living in the city area. It's literally one blue stop from O'Hare airport.

There’s a strip club that’s called The Pink Elephant I think that’s pretty good.

Logan Square, Wicker Park, and Wirgly Ville are really fun for bar areas.  Wirgly Ville has this country bar that I don't remember it's name, but is rather fun.

What kind of things do you want to do?

Where is Nier playng, Chicago Symphony Orchestra? Spend some time at the Art Museum before going.

Pretty good hipster burger spot. Pretty busy on weekends. One of my faves.

The one on state street is never too busy unlike the one up North.

It's ok...

Another cool spot, but probably kind of out of your way.

Honestly the good thing about the city is that it's pretty easy to get around. Just fucking set your map app to public transportation on your done.

There's plenty of "things" in River North honestly. There's a EDM playing dance club over there that I forgot it's name. But it's honestly probably my least favorite spot, because it's super Yuppie white people.

Also check the Music Box Theater.

They may have something cool in January. I think last January was a Ghibli thing, but not the lame ones you see at your local megaplex. I mean fucking 35mm scratchy copies. It was awesome. Sometimes they have cool midnight movies, I know I'm going to go see The Matrix this November.

I mean they are showing fucking Ninja Scroll this November. Like thats cool.

Hmm... hey 213372bu. Do you have Jet's Pizza where you live? If not, buy it when you are here lol. It's my fav pizza from Detroit. Detroit style of course. They have non-Detroit options too, but you want the good ol Detroit style

What you're going to want to do is hire local, not just some foreign bodybuilders you know.

And try something more creative and less troublesome than a lynching, there's a whole world of hate crimes, explore them.

Wait for it to warm up, you don't have to do it on the coldest night you can find in the dead middle of the night. A day with snow might even be more useful to lose any "evidence" in.

Eat your Subway first, before faking the hate crime. If you like it to marinate a little you can do that earlier too. Besides, if you get really creative you won't want to eat afterwards anyway. As a bonus you don't have to carry it around with you.

You won’t end up in an unsafe area unless you intend to. There’s practically no reason to go anywhere south of Chinatown while visiting. Everything north of that is super safe, and the cold is going to deter crime in general.

Navy Pier and the museums are all super close to each other. Would not recommend walking between them though.

I assume the concert will conclude by 10PM. you should have no problem making it to the Music Box. I say do it. Music Box is great. Hell I'd even go have a beer with you before the movie  :trumps

If you go to Lou Malnati's go to this one:  958 W Wrightwood Ave

Across from there is a neat pub called PROST. Get their massive ass pretzel. And if you are up for it, drink a beer from a glass boot.

Otherwise I think your itinerary is totally fine. Doing the Shea Aquarium plus science museum and The Art Institute will easily take up your whole day.

Edit: and lol. I didn't know we had a place called Gaijin here. Should go weeb out there at some point. Let me know how it was.

There's a hotel with a Mike Ditka restaurant. It's mildly amusing.

I didn't eat there when I stayed at the hotel last year. :idont

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I assumed it wouldn't be vegetarian friendly, which is a safe assumption to make in steak town.
[close]

The hotel is nearby the archbishop's seat which is across the street from where some Prohibition Era gangster got blasted. It's not particularly impressive.

I stayed in River North and hung out there and in River West a few months ago.  Check out The Matchbox - really great bar with excellent bartenders.  I also really enjoyed the Darling in River West.
