Title: "Does anyone know about electricity?" or "It's ghetto night at my apartment"
Post by: border on January 30, 2007, 11:22:07 PM
Woke up this morning and realized that the heating doesn't work.  After emerging from a shower amidst a 40-degree bone-chill, I call the landlord to complain.  They can't get anyone out here to fix it until tomorrow.  So now I sit, huddled up in my room with a space heater I bummed from someone at work.

The space heater has two operation modes - 750W and 1500W.  I had it on 1500W earlier and it blew a circuit when I tried to print something for school....I guess it doesn't help that the PC, printer, and monitor are all drawing power on the same circuit.  I went to the fuse box and flipped the breaker and everything went back to normal.  I've switched the heater down to 750W, but it barely manages to keep the room warm (damn this drafty old house).  If I jack it up to 1500W again, will it most likely blow the circuit again?  If it blows again, is there a danger that it will screw something up?

Also, is it safe for me to leave this thing on while I sleep?  Is it better to risk pneumonia than risk burning the house down?

The house is old and drafty, but the electricity doesn't run on fuses.....at least not that old-school system where you have to unscrew a fuse and replace it.  When the circuit blew it only cut power to my bedroom...the rest of the building was fine.  When you're running on a newer set up, I don't know if you're limited to the number of times you can blow the circuit....I thought it wasn't technically blown, it just cuts off before it blows.

It's 47 degrees right now, but will probably dip into the 30's overnight.  The heat was off all last night (I usually sleep with it off and didn't notice the problem until morning) and I did okay.  I have a comforter and long underwear so I will probably be alright if I turn the heater off, but would prefer to at least keep the room mildly warm...

I would not sleep with a space heater on.

No, I just don't wanna impose unless it's an emergency.

Okay, fuck it.  I'm cold as hell.  I'm turning it up to 1500W and going to sleep.....if you don't hear from me again, just assume that I died in a fiery inferno.....or that I blew the circuit again and can't log on due to lack of power.
