Title: Any of you all use a decent chair for PC stuff, recommendations?
Post by: Bebpo on December 29, 2019, 02:53:36 PM: So I'm still using a 20 year old office chair at home for PC gaming from when I was in high school in the 90s because I'm dumb and I hate assembling furniture. This probably one of the reasons I have shitty back/neck pain issues. At work I at least use a knee-sitting type chair (which doesn't give me back/neck pain, so it works) but it's not very comfortable and wouldn't want it at home for gaming when I want to relax.

With my home PC chair, I can't play PC games for more than about an hour at a time because my back or neck starts hurting a lot and I gotta get up and move around. I've tried buying various cushion supports to add but they don't really help much. Like the back support cushion I got helps with my back but instead makes my neck hurt! I usually get around this by using TV-out and playing on my TV with my couch which doesn't give me issues. But I figure I need to get off my ass and just get a new PC chair.

I googled the best chairs for neck/back support/pain for gaming and PC Gamer's top 2 for 2019/2020 were the Secretlab Omega 2020 & The Vertagear SL5000. Both look fine although I'm not sure how the head support or recliner style reclining back is supposed to work when you need to reach forward to your keyboard and mouse.

Any recommendations or thoughts on modern PC chairs?

has all adjustable parts for ergo and a head/neck rest too. very comfortable and durable, we've had them a few years now (and moved with them once) and no signs of wear.

That's so weird... I was just shopping for a new office chair today too and stumbled across these bungie chairs.. Totally need one with a mesh/vented seat area. Can't deal with leather, cushioned bottoms anymore. Also want to get rid of arm rests too for multiple reasons.. especially VR.

Can confirm, chair is great. Got the same one for myself around Thanksgiving, and I love it.

Don't buy a chair advertised as a "gaming" chair, they're all marked up and generally speaking have dumb shit you don't need on them and are more uncomfortable. Get this knock off Herman Miller for a couple hundred bucks less and call it a day.

These mesh chairs are pretty popular but the bottom doesn't look very soft/cushion-y?
My lower neck pain seems to come from sitting on hard surfaces for extended periods of time. Even driving in my car after an hour or so my back and neck will start to act up and I need to get out and walk around for a bit.

Today I was playing PS4 on the couch and played like 4-5 hours straight in a slouched absolutely not ideal posture and had no back or neck issues at all because couch cushions are soft. But last night I couldn't play more than an hour of RDR2 on PC in my chair with a harder firm bottom without having neck pains.

The chairs mentioned in the OP look very cushion-y, like a movie theater recliner which looks good to me. But I see there's lots of really expensive top brand mesh chairs everywhere and they don't look like soft cushion's at all, so idk what's up with that. I get that more firm seat = better posture, but I'm kinda past that point and already fucked up and need soft support stuff.

Also googling around it looks like my desk setup is pretty bad so trying to adjust that. My desk is too high and if my chair is raised up so the monitor is at eye level instead of a little above that my feet can't touch the ground. Might need to get a whole new desk setup.

Post by: Coax on December 30, 2019, 12:42:39 AM: I've found if a generic desk chair has firm padding, a not too deep seat (front-to-back) and adjustable medium-height back (able to be angled forward/back) it's fine.

Being able to angle/move the back further forward helps me the most with keeping a good posture imo. Chairs without adjustable backs kill my posture, even if I add cushions.

You need a monitor arm actually.

You're leaning in b/c monitor is too far and low. Look at the image closely.

I have rhe same issue, posture is really important and I try to make myself sit upright anytime I play anything now.

It's supposed to be better for your neck if you are looking more downwards or are level with your monitor, yeah. That reminds that it's supposed to be really bad to do this with TVs, too, but it's popular to wall-mount them over fireplaces. I don't think I'd be able to sit there and look up like that.

Recommendation for a good desk is to go the IKEA "desk hack" route- Get two Alex drawers and then a kitchen counter slab to sit on top of them. It's low enough for good posture, gives you a shitload of space (different lengths are available), plus if you want to switch it up or if something happens to the top area, it's just the counter top portion that needs to be changed out and the drawers can stay.

Your head follows your eyes biomechanically. Same principle when making turns when driving.

Like I said above, raise your monitor and your head will follow naturally.

Yeah, this is the one you want. Nicely 'vented' with how it's made and very good for posture. I have sciatica and shitty chairs fuck up my back- have zero problems with this one. In fact since there's good chairs at both work and home, my back barely ever bothers me anymore.

A lot of gaming chairs do so would think some larger office ones might. *edit* Could also look at drafting chairs?

That said I got a gaming type PICMAX(?) chair last year and it’s a giant piece of shit. Never again. I have always had high back leather/office chairs but am probably looking into something more ergo soon.

The staples one nacho posted includes head ready and is currently on sale so has me tempted lol.

I think all older gamers’ posture is just fucked tbh.

Discovered that the mesh ones that recline back as you push back w/pressure are super comfortable but the ones there stopped at the mid-back not sure if that would be good enough for the head/neck support I need.

The most comfortable chair I sat in was this Serta Hensley executive chair. The back of the neck felt like a pillow and felt like a chair I could fall asleep in if I was tired which sounds comfortable. Dunno how great it'd be for typing and leaning forward but it was very comfortable.

Just trying out chairs for 20-30 mins at each spot gave me a sore neck. When I can, like with the switch, I generally play in bed on a soft pillows headrest and on the couch I slouch back so the back couch cushion is sorta a pillow rest.

I think trying all these chairs had been real helpful and helped me figure out what I want is more a comfy lazy boy kinda recliner I can use for kb+m games and relaxing back controller games on my pc. They might not be good for posture but they’re pretty comfortable.

Also sat in some gaming chairs and found them really uncomfortable especially the hard pillow bags for neck/back. Glad I didn’t go that direction.

Post by: nachobro on December 30, 2019, 08:42:22 PM: heh, i got that chair when i worked at apple cause they required a certain level of ergo/posture correction in what you used in your home office so that just trained me to use better posture and sit correctly, so thats one nice thing about it. :lol i removed the neck rest from mine but that's just cause it feels a bit off on a 6'2" guy. it's definitely the kinda chair that wants you to sit a certain way but once you acquiesce to its will it is very comfortable.

if you get a lazyboy make sure its one with the mini fridge inside for maximum gaming laziness :lol

They had one that was a straight knock off of Aeron called Workpro 9000 Quantum, which was good but I found it a little tight fitting.

Then they had this Workpro 12000 Mesh and it's really adjustable and by the time I was looking at it my neck pain was kicking up and this was the only chair that sitting in it and reclining a bit actually made my neck pain go away. The lumbar mesh is pretty soft and I loosened the seat recline tension a bit and it was a nice comfy recline feel. Especially with being able to move the seat depth forward and basically turn it into a recline if I can raise my feet up. Also putting the back seat up to the highest the top rests on the bottom of my skull, which isn't very comfortable but if I throw a pillow on or something it might be comfortable to rest in.

Anyhow, felt good and was very adjustable. Seat cushion wasn't the softest, but seemed solid. Only annoying thing is there are literally like zero reviews online from anywhere besides customer reviews from office depot. But I'm gonna jump on it.

The only question is if I really wanna go with this mesh style and don't mind spending the money, should I find a place where I can try out an actual Herman Miller before getting a knock off? I wonder if a real one + head cushion add-on (looks like it's about $1,400 combined) would feel even nicer.

Doesn't seem worth spending an extra $1k, but just curious. My neck pain spot's kinda unique in that it's a residual from a whiplash car accident like 8 years ago that never completely went away and is only on one side, so every chair is different in how it feels. Might as well try as many as I can.
