Title: Reading books for beginner
Post by: RyoonZ on January 06, 2020, 06:28:47 PM
Some background information is that I'm of Chinese descent that was born in Indonesia. I think I have pretty good understanding of English since I played and watched lots of games and films but I almost never read any book in my life in any languages. Films and games are pretty easy to follow since they have visual to aid in providing information but books are different story. I can't really visualize pages that describe a person entering tavern wearing such and such, their physical features, they heard exactly footsteps of 4 person approaching with weapons and began to fight. And after reading all that I immediately forgot what I just read. And that was even on pretty modern English, I can't possibly imagine reading stuff that requires me to google every single words.

So what I've wanted to ask is there any book reading progression like reading children books since I've never read them anyway before reading some other stufsf or should I just read what I've wanted to read multiple times to have better understanding?

I grew up reading these:

Give them a try and see if you're too advanced. Your English is good so I assume you are, but you're requesting children's books so...

If this is too easy we can move on to teen shit.

I don't recommend Harry Potter because of how terrible it is.

Read The Hobbit, Alice in Wonderland, and The Little Mermaid.

It sounds weird but maybe read a book about an event or film that you've seen.
Perhaps it's easier to visualize if you have already 'seen' the story. Or maybe start with Comic books.

The Bartimeus trilogy is pretty good and simple enough, but if you do buy it get the physical version because there's a lot of footnotes.

Freak the Mighty. It's quite short and the English I think is for any audience.

I would steer you towards middle school graphic novels. They have more of a narrative hook, they have pictures to help you follow along and the English phrases and ideas aren’t too complex. Some of the cultural references might be hard to grasp though.

So maybe books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Bone and American-born Chinese could be a place to start.

Having never read a book before, the dude is in a very special place and one that I envy because he can just read MALAZAN and be done with reading.  No regret for having wasted time to wade through hundreds of less-than books just to get to the perfect ones.

Diary of a wimpy kid is not bad.... for a kids book. I read them with my kid but would never pick one up to read as an adult.

I feel like his grasp of a English in the post is higher than what you need to read a wimpy kid book and I have read every single one out loud so would know.

but why not maybe just like actual cape comic books. You really only need like a 3rd or 4th grade reading level or so but the content is generally aimed at people at least approaching adulthood.

Edit: Maybe Goosebumps books too, they are not great, but simple enough to read. I’m trying to think of things I have read with my kid but didn’t hate.

Edit2: also maybe just start with early reader books, like ones that have levels, until you hit the right balance. They’ll all be pretty boring stories, but learning to read is what they are for.

Read Harry Potter, it certainly isn’t perfect but the books are pretty fun.  Like a good autisty I still read through the series every now and again when I’m feeling something familiar and comfortable.

I would say that children's books are a bad place to start unless you're going to have someone read them aloud to you (while pausing for effect, making sound effects, et cetera) and then you read them yourself.

Stay away from picture books, even if Alan Moore's name is on the cover.

With that out of the way, this is going to take some work. For your situation I would recommend:

1. Picking a play you've never seen live or adapted as a movie. Stick to something recently written if you can instead of high theater or Ancient Greek stuff.

2. Grabbing a printed copy of it. If you have access to a local library it's probably better to check out a copy from there because plays are usually overpriced.

3. Read it with a pen and paper by your side. As you go along and when you finish a scene write down:

-how things make you feel when they make you feel something. it doesn't have to be anything intelligent or even coherent, I think I have "damn Creon be fronting rn" written in a copy of Antigone somewhere.

-what you think someplace or someone looks like (written plays have minimal description usually). think about what people say and how you think they're saying it. don't be afraid to have a bad dude dress in black or whatever.

4. The prior step will take you awhile to complete, I would not recommend completing it in one sitting.

5. Wait a few days, read all of your notes again, then try to read the play in one sitting without stopping to write notes. Use what you felt and imagined in your first read to fill in the blanks.

6. If you can, see the play live or as a movie adaptation. Think about how you pictured things versus how the production team did it. If they disagree, why do you think they pictured that thing in that way?

If this all sounds very repetitive keep in mind that we had our parents, teachers, other adults read us the same stupid books over and over as kids.

Some great advice in this thread but honestly if you really want to read, the easiest way is to just pick books that relate to things you're passionate about. The kinda stuff you obsess over and don't mind re-reading constantly to gain understanding. With that in mind I'd definitely shoot for something small or with a lower page count so you can travel with it.

I typed this out and realized this kinda fits with what Kara is saying (grab a play) but I'm gonna go ahead and say maybe some spiritual literature could fall in here too.

are you looking to read to improve your english, or to read for the sake of reading? if the latter, it might be easier to start off with books in the language you are most comfortable with just to develop the habit. after a while you'll figure out what kind of stuff you like and go from there

ps don't actually read settlers

My kids are just discovering reading proper books.

They love Roald Dahl's books, so those are a great place to start. Also, my daughter is really enjoying Enid Blyton's Secret Seven books.

Okay thanks for the suggestion I actually done reading the first book in my entire life (Comic book not included I actually read a lot of those Doraemon, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, etc) it's called Fairy Tales with Hans Andersen. I thought it'd be pretty beginner friendly. I read it for 30 minutes every morning and finally finished it yesterday. I don't know how I feel about it to be honest. There's some well known story like The Ugly Duckling and The Little Match Girl and some I've never heard before. There's actually a lot of word there I'm not familiar with and I figured out my problem with reading is not being able to retain information, I have this problem with TV shows or anime or just about anything really that I have to binge in a sitting, I'd forgot most stuff by next by next week.

Now I'm starting reading The Witcher and it's actually easier to read and visualize the scene description, probably because I already watched the show and played the game.

Go to the library. I'm super serious. There is literacy programs for folks that don't know how to read or write. While you're able to write and possess English, you can probably find English as a Second Language/assistance/practice folks.

If not that, asking for entry-level books depending on how comfortable you are (going from E Beginners [level 1-3 generally] to elementary-grade aged levels 1-5th grade and then beyond) can work.

Since you're reading middle-grade books, you can probably skip that and just ask for English practice and/or YA novels from the librarians. Basically if you tell them your needs, they can generally find you what you're looking for.
