Title: Any of you pay for any podcasts?

Not talking about a Patreon but stuff like Luminary, which bills itself as the Netflix for podcasts.

Seems lolworthy when they are so many free podcast

I had no idea that that even existed. Wasn't even aware of pay to listen podcasts either.

I wouldn't mind subscribing to a handful of them (on Patreon or equivalent) if I had some more silly money to spare, but it's not really for any of the extra content, more because I'd like to support whatever mission a particular podcast set itself to... But the thought of paying for a platform is meh and I never had it until this thread. I don't think this sort of model is ever coming back.

The most common model is bonus episodes / subscriber-only feed.
Honestly it's less exhausting to listen to the hosts shilling their own stuff than Audible VPN Giant Strawberry of Squarespace so at least that economic model has that going for it.

No, I would not give money to an internet person. Like two-thirds of internet persons that achieve notoriety are eventually revealed as pedophiles or worse. The only potential pedophiles I give my money to are a few DNC candidates every 4 to 8 years.

Yeah I guess when I have around 25 podcasts in my a podcast app there is always more than enough for me to listen to. So a bonus here or a week early episode (Retronauts does that for example. I've kinda stopped listening to them for several months as it kinda seems to me they need a break themselves) doesn't really mean much to me. But yeah it's cool to have something like that if you actually do support the podcast with a patreon.

Also, in my experience, the more “corporate,” polished podcast-networky podcasts are so broad that they’re uninteresting. Why would you want something that feels like a network TV experience? Do people want the Starbucks of podcasts? Ones actively looking for money are definitely not going to be producing good content. It’s not their priority.

Is it good or bad vibes that none of the podcasts I listen to are on this graphic ?

Not sure I’ve ever seen anything but Patreon RE: paid podcasts, so for Patreon I’ll sub to YKS or Chapo a few times a year when I run out of background noise while working or gaming.

Same here. The few I heard on that were awful. I bet stuff like Comedy Bang Bang is okay but comedians today kinda mostly blow so why bother.

A really nice Danish radio station closed a few months back (well probably more like half a year ago), and a lot which I love moved to a paid subscription thing. Thankfully I have managed to get free trials until this point, so no need yet, but I am afraid my addction to podcasts, especially with working 15 hours shifts and being completely alone for a lot of it, will make me pay.

It’s also just a principle thing. I have a problem giving money to people I know are dumber than me if the only benefit I’m receiving is getting to hear them be dumb. It’s shredding the fruits of my own work to have my intelligence slowly degraded.

Dan Carlin's? But then his new ones are always free.
A buck a show, is all they ask.  :-*

Just Pateron and thats for We Hate Movies, Blank Check, and Watch Out for Fireballs.

Never heard of this other service.

I may start paying for Last Podcast on the Left when they switch to their new home.

I love podcasts and with my current job I have so much time for them that I'm always looking for ones I vibe with.
