Title: Scambaiting
Post by: BisMarckie on January 31, 2020, 02:29:18 PM
Since sleep is hard to come by for me right now, I have fallen into this deep youtube hole of watching scambaiting videos.  kitboga's 36 hour scambait is a masterpiece

:rejoice

It's amazing how angry these guys get, how ridiculous their stories are and how stupid their methods are.

Weirdly enough, according to a Microsoft survey, the elderly are not the most vulnerable demographic to these tech support scams.

f you were asked to pick the most vulnerable demographic to tech support scams, chances are your answer would lean towards the older generation. Traditionally, the elderly have less experience/knowledge of technology, and could therefore be more at risk of falling victim to these scams.

Microsoft’s survey results, however, show that Gen Z, millennials and males are the most vulnerable to tech support scams – a surprising revelation, given that the younger generation is, on the whole, more digitally savvy. This, however, appears to be the cause of their overconfidence and false sense of security – these groups are the most likely to lose money after continuing an interaction with scammers.

How is that even possible, who in their right mind would give someone remote access to your computer and fall for simple HTML edits?

Any of you guys tried scambaiting before? I did it once by responding to a spam mail which claimed I won a lottery, but they got suspicious and stopped replying after like 2 or 3 mails. Never had a scam call though.

My sympathy for people who fall for these scams can only extend so far. Who in their right mind agrees to pay a debt in gift cards? I don’t care how old you are—that’s fucking stupid.

Some can be understandable when you consider the breadth of the population. Like when you've got someone who fled from some corrupt as hell hole, the prospect of being threatened by government affiliates on the phone isn't going to be thought of as a scam immediately.

Somewhere in these videos posted above, there is a guy who begins the phone call with: "Hello, here is the secretary of Donald Trump" :dead

Around 50 mins in:

(man with thick Indian accent) "Hello, this is your grandson's teacher."

"Mrs. Kiki?"

"Yes."

"You don't sound like Mrs. Kiki"

He later calls again trying to speak with a high-pitched voice. :dead

Hoax Hotel (I think) has some good fuckery too, like connecting an IRS scammer to a Canadian Tax Service one.

There's another good video where some guy had access to internal documentation from a call center, good details on the actual business model of that. Jim Browning IIRC.

The first caller deals with a scam. And I'm almost starting to think the "I have the cure for balding" dude is potentially a scammer too lol. Or maybe just off his rocker. Kinda feel bad for him if he's just a dude who is struggling mentally, but also thinks the world of himself.

I like the calls where they get one scammer to start talking to another.

Also "Lenny," which is a series of recordings designed to play and fuck with scammers.

Stringing scam callers along for as long as possible is one of my guilty pleasures

You should just start telling them a completely nonsensical and meandering story that gets more and more ridiculous until they finally hang up.

Last time one of the car accident scammers called, I started slow, but built up to where I had killed someone by hitting them in my car while I was drunk and on drugs. They hung up on me.

I hate it when they hang up on me because I like to finish with a flourish where I ask them if they have a mother and tell them that they should go and fuck her because I already did.

Either that or I tell them to go kill themselves. I like to think that at least one has taken my advice. Not sure which advice though.
