Please. I'm dying for some turn based strategy. After I finish Souls 3 I plan on playing X-Com or replay FF Tactics or Shining Force II or maybe getting FE: Three Heroes.
There's the Disgaea games. Is the latest good? What's the best Disgaea game? Is 2 good? I've only played 1.
One unfortunate thing is that these days the serious storytelling srpg thing in the Tactics Ogre, Front Mission, Final Fantasy Tactics vein doesn't even exist. Srpgs today are mostly silly or tongue in cheek when I want serious political Shakespearean/matoor shit. I like what I've played of Fire Emblem series but gameplay is clearly what it's famous for. Although there is FE3 and 4 which appear to be more serious in its storytelling.
-
I haven’t played it yet, but I’ve heard favorable opinions for Fell Seal, and it seems to have reviewed really well, too.

Did you ever play Vandal Hearts? If not, I think you should check it out.
Googling the fell seal link also led me to this website, which looks like it might be a good resource.

Both Xcom and Fire Emblem are very cool and good, and get my recommendations.
One that you didnt mention, that is also pretty cool, is the banner saga. Only played the first, but it's cool. If you find South park somewhat funny, the South Park games are also great. and if you havent played the latest Dragon Quest, that is an absolutely fantastic game imo.
-
Heard of Banner Saga. Haven't checked it out yet but I like what I've seen.
Haven't played Vandal Hearts. Wanted to back in the day.
Dragon Quest XI is not an srpg.
-
i guess i dont know my genres well then. either way, play dragon quest and remember to install sweaty skin mods. :-*
-
Matsuno please come back :(

(Play X-com immediately)
Ever try Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter? It's a great spin on the genre.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breath_of_Fire:_Dragon_Quarter
The storyline is pretty boilerplate JRPG nonsense, but the setting and the mechanics are top-notch.
-
Xcom: Enemy Unknown
Xcom 2: War of the Chosen
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 4
All bonafide classics, and some of the best games I’ve ever played.
Xcom 2 is the most complicated and demanding (though also my favorite), so I’d save it for last if your brain isn’t in SRPG mode. All the others are good entry points I’d say.
The VC games are the only ones that have a story someone might actually care about. The first one in particular is pretty decent I thought. Fourth is definitely worse story wise, but it makes it up in gameplay.

Of course. Bofdq is a classic

I'll play xcom then. I have it on steam. I think rumbler gifted it to me years ago.

Not a jrpg or whatever but Into The Breach is hella fun. Also Wargroove is the true successor to Advance Wars and has crossplay, a level creator that includes the ability to add story npcs and dialogue, and a bunch of free updates.
-
The current generation of Super Robot Wars games (V, X and T) are all available in English for both PS4 and Switch.
-
I hear Mutant Year Zero is pretty good. Same devs released another game recently. Something 2029.
-
Shining Force 3 if you can get ahold of it at a reasonable price. Also the Langrisser I/II remakes drop today (make sure to switch back to the original character art)

corruption 2029, haven't played it yet but it looks pretty cool. i think its epic store only if anyone still cares about that.
-
Yeah, I really liked Banner Saga ep1. I still need to play ep2/3.
I hear Fell Seal gameplay-wise is up there with FFT/TO but story/writing-wise is lolz. It's in the latest humble choice bundle if you want to check it out.
-
If you play FE3H (you should) don't even fuck around, start on maddening mode or I can guarantee you will hate it. (You'll probably still hate it)

Matsuno please come back :(

What was that one game? Popular, 2d, you build ships? Forgot the name.
-
You talking about FTL?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ4FRcu_bjs
-
Yeah that.
Can you tell me about it?
-
It's really more of a rogue-like than a strategy game. You are trying to reach a certain point in the galaxy by hopping between planets and other notable locations, and each stop presents you with some kind of random situation [which can either help or hurt you]. You have to manage resources and fight with hostile ships along the way. Since it's a rogue-like there's a lot of RNG involved.
It's a pretty good game, just not necessarily what you were asking for you in the OP.

given your propensity to go head first into things i reckon you'll be working on soldering articulated limps onto your spine before the end of your first playthough.

X-com and X-com 2 are solid. I really enjoyed them. But you need to be in a good mind-set for them. They can be hectic and if you don't want to save-scum the higher difficulties (and Ironman) can be brutal if you're not careful.
I'd say War Groove if you're looking for an Advanced Wars -like on PC.
Maybe Invisible, Inc which isn't necessarily "SRPG" but is a stealth strategy title that does grid-based selections like SRPGs and X-com.
As for Disgaea: They're all solid (even DD2) but they're grind-treadmills: The end game will want you to optimize your stuff/grind item world to do Baal and the like. So if you've played 1, you've pretty much played them all. It depends on how much you enjoyed the "humor" and world/characters of Disgaea since 2, 3, 4, 5 do different casts with the older casts coming in as DLC for the entries.

Banner Saga is pretty good. Solid Switch port as well.
Grand Kingdom was kind of overlooked.
Are the Langrisser Remakes good?
-
I forgot some of my favorites:
Metal Gear Acid 1 & 2
First one has some rough edges, but still legit. Second one is just sublime :mouf
-
Battletech in theory would've been an amazing game, but it isn't well designed by any means.
Lots of useless weapons, overly slow (even as someone with lots of patience), features that they put in but never realized, statistics that lie a lot etc. etc.
Thank you. I didn't want to ruin on greatrumblers parade.
I was so hyped for Battletech. I love mechs, I loved mechwarrior, I loved Front Mission, I loved Hairbrained Studios Shadowrun games. It should have been great.
But it was waaaaaaay too slow and not that great designed and I gave up a few missions in. They really blew this one. Still waiting for my good modern mecha strategy game. Into the Breach is closer for sure, but still not what I'm looking for.

I see my Super Robot Wars plug has gone ignored.
SUPER ROBOT WARS. They're in English now. You know what must be done.

that isn't turn based
It plays like Jagged Alliance mixed with XCom. You input your orders and then they play out. But if you get spotted during the action phase, it allows you to adjust your orders.
-
XCOM2
-
XCOM2
But not before playing X-com 1 and winning (and then finding out the canon route is DISMAL failure). Because X-com 2 kind of ruins 1 with some of it's changes and losing "COMMANDER I'D LIKE YOU TO TELL YOUR TROOPS TO NOT THROW GRENADES AROUND SO WE CAN GET SAMPLES!!!" x100.

Modern SRW games are terrible strategy games but fun visual novels.

what about SD GUNDAM G GENERATION CROSS RAYS
-
Yeah, SRW has been in English for the last 3 entries on PS4/Switch (X/V/T). You just have to buy from the Asia store. Because of licensing they can't release in the West, but they do full English translations and English option for the region-free Asia releases now.
X/V are good srw games
T is pretty mediocre

Even less strategy and so slow it's almost unplayable.

There should be a demo up on any of the SE Asian Playstation stores in English. One of the newer games got a demo, I think it might've been T.

This game is riduculously good if you like the FFTs
-
Damn, now I definitely need to check it out.
-
Xcom2 is coming to Switch at the end of the month, might be worth looking at.
-
Knowing that cindi likes mass effect I think if they're going xcom they should go xcom PC
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD0BTFB3YbE
e:
actually xcom2 is dirt cheap in humble monthly, and maybe even cheaper / free from anyone who subs to humble monthly and already owns xcom 2

If you want a serious story, Disgaea isn't going to have it, but 4 and 5 are both pretty good games. I like the characters better in 4, but 5 is a better game with nicer sprites. Sometimes I just play a Disgaea when I want to make big numbers go up.
I found the cast of 2 pretty insufferable. I would say don't play it lol. The new ones are better.

There was a pretty good Fire Emblem clone on Steam. I think it's called "Banner of the Maid" or something and takes place during the French revolution. It got great reviews.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 4
VC1 was incredible, I still have to pick up 4 some time. Mario+ Rabbids is great fun too.
There's also Fire Emblem: Three Houses which is a pretty great entry in the series.
Especially if apart from waging war you also like to drink tea. A sort of weeb game of thrones if you will.
-
Mario & Rabbids was stupidly fun and far better an xcom clone than it had any right to be. Where in the hell is our sequel, UbiSoft? We know you guys like sequels...
-
The gears of war tactics is pretty shallow, but really damn fun and satisfying
