If I do replace it, what's a setup that will let me run games in medium to high settings in 1080p? Not too expensive. I don't need extreme fps or ultra high resolutions, just something that will double as a system to play a few games on.

Download that stick on a usb and just reinstall windows you should be good then.

Don’t take to repair shop as that is literally what they’ll do and ask you for a lot of money to do so.

If you need files from it use live cd on a usb first and you can boot into Linux save files from the dead HDD then do what I said before.

Don't think there is a need to upgrade laptop just for this.

windows used to be tailored to PCs then they tried to take over the world, fucked up, now we're stuck with non-PC bullshit on our PCs

...So in other words, they should've rested on their laurels, have Linux and Apple overtake them like on Servers, Phones, etc. and fade into nothingness? :hmm

What else were they gonna do with the work? Throw it completely out? They have a touch interface for tablets now. They have a touch-interface for drawing/hybrid applications. Their Surface line (bar lack of repairability) is solid. Windows 10's touch interface isn't the best, but it's miles ahead of Apple's.

What are you expecting them to do? They did rest on their laurels (hence me being flippant about you complaining that they didn't do shit), got fucked over completely and now are trying to make sure Windows (which Win 10 Phone was doing) is able to be the OS that runs on everything, compared to Linux (which nearly goddamn already does).

What do you want them to do? "Focus on Windows!!!!!!" That's what they're doing: They're trying to make it a general purpose OS a la Linux.

It's pretty old. I think they stopped around 5 years ago.

It's actually quite nice, which is why I kinda want to save it.

Business-wise: They didn't really need to panic due to Enterprise and Office strangleholding money for them. But you can't say they didn't rest/asleep at the wheel for future tech.

I'd say the X-box (and Surface) were worthwhile investments for them. But the X-box was a huge money-loss (and the later 360's sort of was?, X720 defo is), and the Surface is getting competition with MacBooks (for those that don't care about hybrids/touch) and convertables that might be cheaper for those that only want a touch-screen-laptop but don't want to pay a "premium" for it (the type-cover, stylus, etc).

But MS themselves? Weren't doing too much. Partially because of the anti-trust case, but also because they didn't "look forward" in a way.

Just a heads up, make a backup or w/e if you haven't already. This happened to me twice on my gf's and my dad's pc and both times the problem was a dying HDD/SSD. so the issue resurfaced again. Might have been a weird coincidence but yeah
