Title: Should airlines be bailef out?
Post by: Cerveza mas fina on March 16, 2020, 11:36:18 AM
I say we fuck em.

Why bail out an industry that is driving the next disaster, climate change.

Hope the silver lining of corona will be a fast track to a greener economy.

Air travel should continue, society should continue. Regular people should be bailed out.

Bag fees.
No free meals.
Smaller and smaller seats.
Horrible customer service.

Let them rot.

Everyone in the service industry is suffering through this. They need to get in line with the rest of them.

With commercial air travel suspended for quite a while this is not the industry I would choose to bail out.
Not to mention that once the crisis is over there will be demand for air travel again so new companies can be set-up with investments.

The people that work for airlines can go work at hospitals and/or other essential industries like food production.
Also freight will continue so there's work in that.

Bullet trains need to happen. In theory, they're "more green," than trains which are more green than planes.

the issue with a supply-side shock caused by a pandemic is that it isn't correcting any market weaknesses so there is a strong case for bailouts in this specific scenario.

air travel is p great. i vote for it. ~3.5% of total climate impact between ghg and non ghg attributable change seems liveable to me  :-[

prob the biggest climate impact for the west will simply be making people poorer.

Imagine that I had the power but won't use it because I like seeing your errors left for all to see.

I'm not sure if it counts as a market weakness but you could fix the efficiency vs time issue by basically making it so that air travel is only allowed for intercontinental flights. Would also force development of a real train system in the US.

Plus like 99% of business travel is useless in the modern day so I don't think there will be a huge ripple effect on other sectors.

me and my gf were planning a trip to HK/taiwan in september before nurgle's reign began. flights are £200 if we book now.

feels a bit like trying to buy one of those £500 TVs that get accidentally marked down to a tenner on amazon, worth the gamble on the off chance it actually comes off.

I'd prioritize electric producers over airlines.

If that airline goes under thats 200 down the toilet

Idea:

  • Like a million Brits grab cheap tickets to Hong Kong and get stranded
  • HKers allow them to be new citizens as long as they can be meat shields during protests (cuz you can't shoot white people)
  • Exit from the Brexit

Now this is a hot-take with Praxis.
