I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

Maybe Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Vanilla Sky, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas.  I don't know.  I can't really name just one.  I love so many movies.

Getting it down to 1 is rather difficult.  Different moods, different favorites.  If I had to narrow it down to movies I can watch no matter what kind of mood I'm in:

Blue Velvet
The Third Man
Videodrome

favorite != good

my favorite movie is Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it's pretty mediocre in terms of direction, and MAN Harrison Ford can't act.

I also love The Big Lebowski, and I can find very few actual directorial, authorial, or acting flaws in that movie. Which also reminds me: Kenny Rogers' "Just Dropped In..." is the best hangover song OF ALL TIME.

That entire soundtrack is just fuckin' spectacular. "Lujon" (the song playing in the backround when The Dude goes to Jackie Treehorn's beach party) sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it. But now I feel that The Big Lebowski OWNS that song, and I was very sad when it was used to much lesser effect in "Sexy Beast".

I felt that in Heat he was already channeling insane Pacino mode. I liked him in Donnie Brasco though. He actually had a subdued role. Johnny Depp was his usual awesome self too.

His role was very lax in LOTR. In the book Legolas didn't play a huge role either, but it was more prominent than in the movie. I loved the way Jackson gave Legolas all the coolest scenes out of the fellowship in TTT (the reverse grab of the horse in slo mo, and the shield surfing) and ROTK (killing the Mūmakil...despite the bad CGI at certain places)

But the scene that really blew me away is in FOTR where Gandalf tells the fellowship that a Balrog is in their presense; the quick shot of his horror strucken face is a brilliant homage to the book. That was the first and only time Legolas showed any fear throughout the entire journey. Of course in the book he literally goes mad for a bit ("Ai Ai!! A Balrog is come!") :lol

No, aside from The Godfather, Al Pacino is only good at playing Al Pacino, similar to how Robert De Niro has been just being De Niro for the past decade or so.

You people do get points, however, for not dragging Scarface into this as evidence of his "talent."

I could never comprehend the following Scarface has.  I always thought it was one of those "so bad it's good" movies, but people actually mistake it for a good movie.

Most critics liked the movie, and most people do too.

It's a good gangsta (not gangster) movie

Actually, alot of people realize what a piece of shit it truly is. Nowadays its mostly "gangstas" or wannabe surburban whites who praise the film.

PD: The original Scarface was infinitely better, and actually had some character.

Montana had some depth if you actually pay attention to the movie. There are a few scenes actually where another side of him is shown - such as his unwillingness to kill the UN reporter as he drove in his car with his children. Or his relationship with his sister

Which is basically cribbed from the character in the original film. Try again.

What difference does it make? Aren't you the one constantly jizzing over a certain remake that apparently isn't better than the original anyway?

Fuckhead, I never saw the original.

The only thing I remember about the Al Pacino scarface (haven't seen the original) is that the acting was probably some of the most horrible of any "classic" crime movie.

Al Pacino was awesome as Ricky Roma in Glengarry GlenRoss. True, it was another take on Al Pacino, but at least it was reasonably nuanced. And Al was awesome as Shylock in the recent "Merchant of Venice" remake (even though that movie was horribly shot.) He was great in Insomnia, too. He's a fuckin' quality actor, even if the variety of the parts he chooses is occasionally suspect.

No, aside from The Godfather, Al Pacino is only good at playing Al Pacino

... and Serpico, and The Godfather Part II, and Dog Day Afternoon, and Glengarry Glen Ross, and Carlito's Way... come on. Pacino, while guilty of hamming it up way too much, still has managed to take on some interesting roles over the years, and compared to De Niro's falling off, Pacino still looks like a god.

Anyways, to the topic at hand. My interchangeable holy trifecta:

- The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (Leone, 1966)
- Vertigo (Hitchcock, 1958)
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick, 1968)

And Jaws gets a lot of heat for being a dumb summer blockbuster, but it's fucking Citizen Kane compared to what Hollywood churns out these days.  It is fun and exciting and scary and adventurous.  But it's also got great characters that are extremely well written.  You really could dissect the movie as a character epic wrapped in the surroundings of an extraordinary event, and that's what I love about it.  The movie is really about Brody, his life and his journey, not the fucking shark.

Also, here you have an adaptation that pees over the source material.  Peter Benchley is a decent pulp writer at best, but a good marine biologist.  The novel is a bunch of Desperate Housewives crap with a killer shark.  Spielberg got that movie transformed into something much, much better.

Jaws is in a stratosphere Jurassic Park can't touch.  Just because both feature large animals that eat people don't make the similar.  Jurassic Park is nowhere near the character-based movie that Jaws is.  Jaws is better written, better acted and a much better movie.

No, but there are certain things you can't deny.  Jaws is just a much better film, screenplay and acting-wise.  I'm sure any of your class professors would agree.

Jurassic Park is good.  It's fun.  I loved it when I was younger, because for Christ's sake, it had realistic looking dinosaurs.  The movie's effects still hold up, and while T2 paved the way, it was Jurassic Park that ushered in the CG era (matte paintings and stop motion be gone!).

For Christ's repetitive sake, Jaws was nominated for Oscar for Best Picture.  That should pretty much end this discussion.

Star Wars was a phenomenon at the time.  It had the goddamn score playing on the radio.  Any exclusion from the Oscars would be like excluding The Sixth Sense when that hit gold, because some movies become bigger than the awards.  That's what happened with Star Wars.  Not that it had any shot.

Star Wars is a pretty fun ride, but I don't think there's any comparison to Jaws.  Jaws is so well acted, whereas Star Wars is not.  Jaws has a superior screenplay.  Jaws has better effects too!

That was mostly a jab at the shitty, fake-o-rama CG effects that Lucas has inserted into the movie.

Spielberg knew that the robotic shark was limited in its range, so he used it accordingly.  It's used to great effect; the movie still terrorizes kids.

People were literally afraid to go in the water.  That wasn't just a tagline - it was the fucking truth.

That's because it's been around for thirty years.  Jaws is so much apart of pop culture, after being relentlessly parodied and mocked on every cartoon, sketch show, movie and TV show, that it's lost a lot of its weight.  As has The Exorcist.

If it were to be released today, it'd still scare the shit out of people.  As would The Exorcist.

The first time I saw Jaws I was afraid to swim in public recreation pools. For a long time I wouldn't go in water, and even today you'll never find me within a mile of a beach (Michigan FTW!).

Today I like the movie even more because I notice things I didn't as a kid. The subtle yet brilliant scene with a drunk Martin and his son, imitating his daddy.

Martin: Give me a kiss
Son: Why?
Martin: Because I need it

I love that scene. Or, the scene with them telling their various horror stories about sea based injuries lol. And like Willco said, the characters in the movie are extremely well written and flushed out. Robert Shaw is amazing in the movie, from his first to last scene. The same with Richard Dreyfuss; can you imagine just how horrible and cliched 90% of other directors would use a "smart" character like that?

BRET RATNER JAWS REMAKE:

Richard Dreyfuss, played by the Mac guy: Um let me see, according to my calculations we -
Robert Shaw, played by Vin Diesel: Shut the fuck up smart man, I'm takin a piss
Richard Dreyfuss, played by the Mac guy: Look, don't be mad because my education pisses...all over yours!
Robert Shaw, played by Vin Diesel: That's what the Vietcong said to me before I ripped out their insides *cue laughter*
 :-X :-\

I LOVE Jurassic Park; I think it's perfectly paced and entertaining from start to finish. But to compare it to Jaws would be ignorant. Jaws scared the shit out of me an hour before the shark was even seen. That's brilliance on Spielberg's part in my opinion; he knew what he had to work with (half of a mechanical shark), and he used it to the max while barely showing it.
