Jesus christ I totally missed the news but my god this is an insane blast. RIP to all who died, if they believe in Allah may their souls be with him and if they believe in Christ I hope they are in heaven.

Oklahoma City bombing was about 3 tons.

The West, Texas explosion was about 300 tons.

The 1947 Texas City disaster was a comparable amount, and killed over 500 people and nearly destroyed the whole town.

By the way, how is it legal to abandon a ship with a kajillion explosives? Like how does that go down? I'm talking about the ship owner, not the abandoned crew.

That whole aspect of this tragedy is incomprehensible to me. I understand that apparently that material could also be used for some agriculture (I think that was other possible use right?) The ship was heading to some African country, but then something didn't work out or whatever so they ended up in Lebanon with all this material but no place to put it as they had no power in that regard, because the initial shipment plan fell through and on top of that the ring leader decided to just say "fuck it and fuck you, I'm rich hahaha. You're on your own while I get my dick sucked in Cyprus." What?

From what I understand the oligarch who owned the vessel went bankrupt, plus they were based out of Cyprus which is up there with Malta and, well, Lebanon on the "good luck getting accountability" scale.

Same thing happened in Toulouse, France in 2001 (just a few days after 9/11). I don't think there's any footage of the explosion itself.

IIRC it was "only" a couple hundred tons of ammonium nitrate that blew up, but the damage was insane. It left a massive crater, tons of buildings were heavily damaged and windows were shattered miles from the explosion. If there was ~10 times that much in Beirut, no wonder so much stuff got obliterated.
