Title: What's your dream house?
Post by: Rman on August 19, 2020, 05:24:39 PM
I'm an MCM guy.

I loved Cameron's house from Ferris Bueller.

Another MCM home.  I'm guessing Drinky lives in something like that.

Something ultra-modern and/or more "boxy."

I like the look of pre-fab and shipping container homes, too.

Even the tiny houses with these designs look awesome.

Maybe it's just because of where I live, but it seems like these kinds of modern contemporary houses are generally more on the west coast (and then in Europe and Asia) and harder to find on the east coast, unless you're going for a multi-million dollar home?

The vast majority of houses in Atlanta are all traditional homes -including the interior designs- although it does seem to be changing lately.

I don’t care about the house, just the location. I would love to live near downtown La Jolla.

I used to think I would want something on the beach but have decided it's too much hassle and would rather rent or something.

Ideally something modern in a major city with a balcony and access to a pool.  :playa

Richard Neutra's Kaufman House in Palm Springs is the greatest house ever built:

Same dude commissioned Fallingwater as well (almost perfect except Frank Lloyd Wright's interiors aren't my style), meaning he had easily the best taste in the world at the time:

I'm not so picky when it comes to the house but i'd probably want a veranda like this in my dream home:

That pic above is similar to what I'm after. I want a spacious house close to nature, and also within commuting distance of my work. There are plenty of good alternatives nearby, I just need to quadruple my salary first.

Something small, modern, neat, and boxy. The houses Bork posted all made me go 'fuck yeah, that one'. To be honest, the missus can make all the decisions as long as I can have one room that recreates this famous interior:

Swap the Berlinetta Boxer with Daytona Competizione #14437 in a plain red livery with NART stripe and white roundels. Nice big integrated bookshelf on the right, and I'm home.

I used to think underground would be better for thermal insulation but you can achieve that same effect by making it a monolithic dome or a passive house.

Build half of it into a hillside, other half is a glass dome.

If it's your dream house, you're gonna want to get old and die in it, and that means stairs are a no-no

Or you just don't use the top floors as much as you get older.

Or since this is a hypothetical "dream house," you put in an elevator.

Or you just hire someone to pick you up and carry you up the stairs. :awesome

But LOLZ aside, yeah, ranch houses are nice for that.  I'd be up for living in one for sure- it's not that big of a deal, but our place has two flights of stairs we have to go up and carrying lots of groceries and whatnot can be a minor pain sometimes.  And now with a kid on the way we have strollers and other stuff to haul around.

To walk up and down some stairs...?

Like I said, we have two flights of stairs in our place.  It's generally not bad because the stairs are indoors and the entire living space is at the top.  But the first apartment we lived in here had three long, winding flights of stairs outside we had to climb up to get home and if you were going up or down with a lot of stuff, then someone else started going up/down, it could be a hassle.  That sucked.  Still wouldn't call it a "nightmare" though, lol.

Yeah man, this arent US stairs.

These are townhouse stairs in Holland/Denmark.

Walking up and down these while holding a baby  :-\

Wanting to grab something from the kitchen  :-\

I remember stumbling up these as well a million times as a teen coming home drunk.

Know so many stories of people falling and breaking stuff. Ive slipped as well a time or two and fallen on my butt.

Think about 4-5 year olds going up and down.  :-\

I found my nightmare house last night, watching The Last Black Man in San Francisco. So much wood, so many pointlessly intricate details, so much 'visual noise' and I can't begin to imagine how long it would take to clean and dust that place. Those big ol' American houses are definitely impressive in many ways, but I personally would never want to live in one.

i lived in a very run down urban area growing up. really hated it there. i would visit my cousins a lot, who lived in the burbank hills, and there were some really nice traditional houses, and that's what i wanted. houses like these:

of course, for me what's even more important is the location, rather than the house itself. would love to have a similar kind of house to the ones posted above on a nice, green-y hillside area (of course, with all the wildfires we've been having, i think that may be a bad idea long term :( )

edit: also, these particular houses are waaaaaaaaaay too big for my needs. i probably wouldn't need more than 3 rooms at the most. hell, as time goes on, i'm questioning whether i even want a house with stairs anymore.
