There's not a good version of Dune because Dune isn't good. At least the production design in Lynch's was great.
Did you get the sense in the movie that it's just a weird ahistorical pastiche of concepts and themes understood at their surface level wrapped up in a package that seems to be sci-fi but is just future fantasy? That's exactly the book except Kyle McLachlan isn't in it.There's not a good version of Dune because Dune isn't good. At least the production design in Lynch's was great.
Why is it bad?

So as I thought, it's basically more Star Wars than Star Trek?
I want to read the books but that movie is so bad it has single handedly destroyed any interest I've had in them. I watched the movie as a kid with my dad and hated it. Watched it as an adult, still hate it. Is it as cheesy as the film portrays? All the film adaptations of Dune are notoriously bad. The books are actually pretty good initially and steadily decline in quality. Should read like the first 3-4? I forget exactly when it goes to shit. Definitely don't bother with the books Frank's kid wrote lol.

I do not condone this badmouthing of the book. I’ve made my peace with people not liking David Lynch’s Dune even if I myself think it’s decent, but the book is excellent, and I feel the first three sequel books are really good as well. I even like Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse:Dune, although I’m not surprised that so many squares get weirded out by then.
Suffice to say: Dune is rad and has a shitload of depth, you should read the book and judge it for yourself. If it helps: Dune is far more readable than Tolkien’s epic packed with fruity songs and ruminating.
P.S. Yes, the book also calls it melange. :idont
Does the book talk about "the spice"? Like, why call it "the spice" and not by its name? It's so bad and cheesy.
It's like an american politician calling nukes "the arsenal". It's so dumb.
The intro with the narration is embarrassingly bad. David Lynch should be embarrassed by this shit.

I didn't badmouth the books as I haven't read them. Don't be offended.

space nobles, please. It's like you were trying to make it sound stupid.I was underlining how a space opera is inherently "cheesy".

That Legend of the Galactic Heroes? I've started this a couple of days ago incidentally, and it seems fairly cheesy to me so far.space nobles, please. It's like you were trying to make it sound stupid.I was underlining how a space opera is inherently "cheesy".
Not inherently.
LOGH isn't cheesy.

I like space opera so that's not inherently bad but is there, say, depth to the story and politics of it? Does it have much to say about the world or universe or is it just space fantasy shit like Star Wars?
yeah, the lynch film is whack. the books bear no resemblance imo. cleanse your palette with the doco "Jodorowsky's Dune" if you need to forget the gauche stylings of the lynch movie then read the books breh. i love the first, and imo, the first three are all a good read.

The trailer really needed Mark Hamill

Maybe not politically correct, but I'm tired of my generation thinking something diverse is automatically good.Give some examples of this.
I'm sorry, that was a very irrational, uninformed, and stupid comment from me.
