Title: Fast Food Drive Thru Thought Exercise
Post by: EightBitNate on November 27, 2020, 03:48:19 PM
Imagine for a second that you’re in one of those double lane drive thrus that eventually converge at the window.

(Excuse the confusing numbering)

Let’s say that:

- Car 3 was the first car at the menu, followed by car 1 at the adjacent menu
- Car 3 finishes their order and pulls up to the window
- Car 2 pulls up to the menu where car 3 was and they finish ordering just a moment before car 1 finishes

Who should be next to pull up to the window? Does car 2 pause and allow for car 1 to finish so that the lanes at the window alternate? Or does car 2 pull up as soon as there order is finished?

I always thought they scheduled these so the cars arrive at the right order to the window.

Unless they specifically tell you to wait for some reason you should go when you've finished ordering.

I’m constantly in the car 2 situation and when I do pull up, they always confuse me for car 1.

So start going to the other one. Problem solved.

You don’t feel any tension with car 1 when you do that?

Are you afraid they're going to ram you in the side in retaliation?

There is no need for either car to pause while the other finishes. Car 1 and car 2 dp car 3 and finish at the same time

For some reason this reminds me of one time I went through a drive through early in the morning before work and forgot to stop to order. (I was tired and probably a little high, I was in my early 20s). There were a couple cars ahead of me and I didn’t realize until I got to the window that I hadn’t ordered. The cashier said “That will be $9.50,” obviously thinking I was the person in the car behind me.

Well, me being who I was in my early 20s, I just handed them my card instead of explaining my fuck up, hoping I would want whatever the poor bastard behind me had ordered. I drove away contemplating the ensuing confusion I had caused. Turns out, Starbucks has pretty solid sausage sandwiches, the mocha was terrible though.
