Title: I don't know what to make of my co-workers
Post by: cloudwalking on February 02, 2007, 11:32:35 PM
I've bitched about this to some people already but I still don't really know what to think.

Lately... well, not even lately, but for the past couple months, my co-workers keep commenting on my weight. Basically they are telling me I'm too thin.

Here's a sampling of some of the comments I've gotten about it.

"Did you lose a ton of weight? You look like you're going to blow away."
"You must have those 'skinny genes.'"
"How come you never eat on your break?" (I don't eat on my 15 minute breaks because I'd rather play video games) "You need to EAT, you're too thin!"
"Did you lose more weight? Your face looks a bit thinner. Yeah. I can see it in your cheeks."
"You pick away at all that candy and snacks, don't eat any real food, that's why you're so thin!"
"Haha, is that your dinner?" (after I dumped 3 chocolate bars on the table) "How are you so skinny?"

Seriously, there's only a handful of people at work who haven't mentioned anything to me about it.

First off, it's weird, because I wasn't aware that everyone was constantly critiquing my appearance while I am doing my job.

Secondly, I am not really that thin. I'm definitely not "too thin." I'm 5'3 112 lbs. That's perfectly normal.

Thirdly, I haven't fluctuated weight in a while and the heaviest I've been while working there is 115, so where are these "you lost a ton of weight" comments coming from?

It's getting on my nerves and making me a little self conscious. To the point where last night I took a long hard look in the mirror trying to decide if I was too thin and just not noticing it. But really, I'm not. I look fine. I don't know what gives? It's like once a week someone brings something up about it.

Like today, one of my co-workers brought back a huge case of chocolates from Hawaii and I asked if I could have one. My other co-worker goes "yes she needs to have one, she needs to eat, get some meat on those bones! You never eat!" and I was like "Uhh, yeah I do, just not on my 15's because it's only a 5 hour shift and I'd rather play games. If a person can't go without food for 5 hours they have a problem."

Agh wtf! Are they just jealous? I don't hang around with women, all my friends are guys. And everyone at my job is a chick. I don't know how their minds work.

It's driving me batty! Someone tell me why they care or think it's any of their business.

They sound like dildos. My coworkers are dildos too. Coworkers are always dildos.

I know it turns me on...

...I think you should say they're just fat-asses.

In a funny way.

it's no trap, i am seriously scratching my head here. no one else says this stuff to me except them. i'm beginning to think i did something to make them think i have an eating disorder and they're trying to drop hints. why else would they go on and on about it?

If someone loses a lot of weight at once, and they were never overweight to begin with (as you were never chubby), then I don't see what's wrong.  They're probably just looking out for you.  A lot of women your age start the whole "Let's vomit after meals!" thing due to social and/or peer pressure.  Just let 'em know your healthy.

where do you live?  some regions have more fatties than others, the more rural regions in I've noticed (all the fried food).  and are they heavier than you?  IDK it could be jealousy, or maybe they want to fatten you up to eat you.

Yes they're all women, except for one guy. I work at a handbag store

I don't know why they would be catty to me though. I'm probably the nicest person who works there.

if this isn't a trap for flattery -- "lol i'm just so thin what can i do tee hee" -- then they're just insecure catty bitches who are feeling heavy and are jealous as fuck

Its probably more of a cultural trend than anything. Theres a backlash about skinny models and actors so its the in thing to call out skinny chicks and reform them.

You've got a small frame (I mean your 5'3"!). I wouldn't take the complaints seriously.

it's not a trap for flattery, i seriously don't deal with women pretty much... ever, so i don't understand why they would be obsessing about it. i've never seriously given a second thought to how much i weigh in the past, but now it's starting to bother me, since they go on and on about it.

i feel like if i tell them to please not talk about it they'll think something is up. also, my bosses have said this shit to me, and i feel weird telling my BOSS not to do something. they're supposed to be setting the good example.

Because you're nice and young and good looking.  I'm assuming most of them are probably older, right?  Look, maybe you haven't gotten the "Women's Guide to Making Men's Heads Asplode and Hating on your Fellow Female" yet, but that's pretty standard behaviour from the female crowd, sad to say.

just say "nope, i'm at a good weight, looks good on me" and give them a sincere friendly smile. that'll actually make 'em flinch.

as women get older (and sometimes singler), they get insecure about their bodies and VERY jealous of younger women (and the attention those women draw). the morning after a thursday night of haagen-dasz pints and watching grey's anatomy on the couch they'll be raging estro-monsters.

But thats why they would be catty.  Are you in a position higher than them/the best looking/youngest/most hit on of the group?   If so their probably just being bitches.  Are they usually nice to you?

I don't think girls should ever take the opinions from other girls on how they look, unless they are really good friends or family.

yeah, i think i am the youngest girl who works there. the youngest one who works there is actually a guy, haha (and probably my best friend out of all of them)

i don't get hit on that much because hardly any men (and especially not single ones) ever come in our store.

i just thought it was weird. but like i say, i hardly hang out with women... ever. i've always been better friends with guys. i think i am a guy trapped in a woman's body.

i don't want internet dudes looking at my body anyway. i barely post any shots with my body in them.

edit: but you'll get to see if you're still willing to trade for the iphone!

Cloud, I have the same problem. I'm also 5'3", and I go from like 105 to 115 pounds. People tell me all the time that I'm "too thin"..even James at times. I think ladies our size are hot! I got used to it after a while, but sometimes it still bothers me, especially when people assume that I don't eat at all. I usually tell them of the record I hold at a camp I used to go to a few years ago--11 grilled cheese sandwiches in a single lunch period.

A friend of mine is 5'7" and 100 pounds. SHE'S too thin!

Everyone has their natural weight they just settle at when they are comfortable. Some natural weight n shapes, largely dictated by genes may or may not be healthy, but who is anyone to decide whats best for yourself? I mean honestly.

I don't understand it, either. What do you mean though that you don't know what you're doing wrong? Obviously nothing, since there's nothing wrong with your weight! :)

Oh, and I saw that your boss has been saying this stuff to you as well? Isn't that borderline sexual harrassment somehow? Really.
