Title: Evilbore filmmakers, a question.
Post by: PhoenixWright on February 03, 2007, 06:26:55 PM
I'm making a short film (Bad video game review) and I need to stage getting high. What's the best (cheap) way of getting enough smoke in a room to make it look realistic?

Have a smoker walk in, puff a pack or two, and get to work! :P

But seriously, don't settle for a fog machine.

Actually, IIRC, that's how Tony Scott gets so much smoke into scenes in his films. He has a smoker from his crew puff a couple cigarettes and get the shot.

Yeah, it's probably cheaper to actually get real pot.  It's less damaging to your health than cigarettes.

Real smoke isnt very controlable. You can rent a smoke machine at a party shop for $20 or so.

You're gonna want to talk to the place that rents them and see if it will set off fire alarms or not. Most of the time its not real smoke, but just ask to be sure.

In my experience, smoke machines make the most manufactured looking smoke imaginable. For that "authentic" quality, you're gonna wanna go with real smoke.

why buy/rent a smoke machine when you can use cigarettes which also seem to have a better effect?
Title: Re: Evilbore filmmakers, a question.

Exactly, FoC. Why waste money on a smoke machine when you can buy a pack of cigs and get a better effect? ::)

You're probably one of the most inept film school students I've ever encountered.

Do yall think they have pot heads sit around set in hollywood whenever they need smoke?  :lol

I guess the cheapest way would be to smoke, but you'll need to be smoking ALOT to fill up a room. Not to mention smoke alarms. And also depending on how long the scene is You'll probably go through a few packs. Also, who is going to be smoking these cigarettes? There is alot to think about. He asked a  film student and I replied as one. If I told my professor that I was going to just have a bunch of doods smoke to get a smoking effect he would probably laugh at the idea.

But, it is cheap and if you think it will work go for it.

I gurantee one guy blowing smoke will not fill a room full for comedic effect.

I have to agree with FoC here.  He's making a parody video game review.  I don't think it matters if the "smoke" isn't refracting light like authentic marijuana smoke.  Also working with real cigarette or weed smoke, you'd have to know the best environmental situation to prevent rapid smoke dispersal, and since most people don't know that shit offhand, it would take experimenting, and wasting time and cigarettes, or worse, weed.

Get the fucking smoke machine.

Comedic effect? He asked to make a cheap "getting high" scene, not Harold and Kumar.

Pack of cigarettes -- authentic, cheap, takes a few minutes

Smoke machine -- expensive, cheap looking, for the lazy

Somehow I doubt he is making a drama about a pothead who plays video games.

He already said he's making a cheap short about about video games with a smoking scene. Why the fuck would he need to rent out a fucking smoke machine for one scene, when there are cheaper and more effective alternatives? Keep that film school "by the book" shit outta here. ::)

Dude, he is making a PARODY VIDEO GAME REVIEW, not fucking the Departed.

He has made it clear that he doesn't really know what he's doing when it comes to real smoke.  Cigarettes and weed would be wasting time.  He can get a smoke machine extra cheap, and it's a load off his back, and he'll probably save a couple of hours or even a day of fucking around with real smoke.  In the end the saved time more than pays for the fucking machine.

And yes I am white man.

Shake, in this case, time is money.  He can spend 20 bucks and get it done quick, or spend 5-10 bucks and spend a day inventing the wheel.  In the end, what's best?

Well, if his time really equals money (which I doubt), then a smoke machine is fine. But why not save a couple bucks and get a better effect if it means half an hour or so of preperation?

I know this isnt a real film set, but nowhere else is "Time=Money" more true than in film. I gurantee it.

OMG HE'S GONNA SPEND SOOO MUCH TIME doesn't work in this case, its ONE FUCKING SCENE in a "non serious" short. C'mon, this isn't a time = money situation by any stretch of the imagination, and having people smoke a couple cigs isn't going to take hours upon hours. Use some fucking rationale, people.

He said the best way is the "cheap" way, so if he smokes that way makes the most sense because even if it doesn't work...he's using the cigarettes or weed.  But I doubt it could be thick enough, and while smoke machines look fake, they're still thick enough and that's all that he really cares about.

Why don't you just buy a pack of cigs, puff on some, see the result? If it sucks, get the machine.

nintenho = he never said how "thick" he wanted it to be, so your fears are pretty much unwarranted.

Just get some pot.

Are you being sarcastic, or just straight-up distinguished mentally-challenged?

Litte butt-munch, I'm saying get a smoke machine, film it, smoke pot later to celebrate.

Cause as far as I know that's the best idea.

Man, if am nintenho smoked weed, the sheer magnitude of the sciencey Retardo Field generated by him would probably destroy the world, or at the very least make all televisions in the world retardedly tune in to Reba.

Closed room.

And I -do- want it to be at "Harold and Kumar" levels of smoke.

I found a store around here selling small smoke machines for $24.99, I'll probably just go with that.
