Post by: Propagandhim on April 24, 2022, 07:09:20 PM
No Chris-Chan history videos
No 12-hour video loop jokes
Nothing about world war 2

I already got Last Podcast on the Left eps in the queue.  Maybe I can try Hardcore History.

Conor Lastowka and Mike Nelson, both comedy writers on Rifftrax (Mike formerly of Mystery Science Theater 3000), torture themselves by reading awful books

it is presented as a book club where you read along with them, but you do not have to in order to understand the plot and have a good time listening to their bafflement

the books vary greatly in their degree and style of awfulness

their first book, the titular 372 pages, is Ready Player One with all its nerd arrogance and references and is as good a place to start as any

book 3 is the short story The Eye of Argon, long considered one of the worst stories ever written, a Conan-the-Barbarian style bit of dreck full of misspellings, malapropisms and purple prose, a real life example of "she breasted boobily down the stairs"

Quote
Grignr grappled with the lashing flexor muscles of the repugnant body of a garganuan brownhided rat, striving to hold its razor teeth from his juicy jugular.

Quote
"Aye! The ways of our civilization are in many ways warped and distorted, but what is your calling," she queried , bustily?

book 8 is called Trucking Through Time, a goofy, guileless story written by an author who clearly loves trucking and the old west, an uncynical person who just wanted to write the great American novel and failed

each of these three are good arcs to listen through

but there's also William Shatner's ghostwritten horrible sci-fi novel Tekwar, and the massive depressing sequel to Willow that no one asked for called Shadow Moon...

probably only if you're already fan of Always Sunny, but these guys are awesome and have so much charisma together

their plan is to watch every episode of the show, reminisce about it, assess its quality, tell random stories etc.

it would be weird to say it's like watching the show because it's nothing like it, but it gives a similar vibe of camaraderie

Merry and Pippin from Lord of the Rings do a podcast, also a great sense of friendship and casual hangout/discussion, often involving LotR obviously

Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend podcast is fun, assuming you're okay with Conan O'Brien.

How do you feel about Audiobooks?

On my last long drive I listened to Neil Gaiman read The Graveyard Book and it was great and passed the time real quick. Otherwise I just listened to How Did This Get Made podcast eps for the lolz.

A good introduction to Hardcore History is Painfotainment. It looks through the centuries and how human torture and execution has been carried out and consumed as entertainment. Also, the Ghengis Khan block of episodes are great.

If you want one on pop music history, I recommend looking through Chris Molanphy’s Hit Parade.. It’s real breezy but entertaining as he takes you through musical genre evolution or artist careers. Find artists/genres you like or a great introduction is called ‘The Great War against the Single”. Interesting look at how the music industry evolved in the 20th century.

Some podcasts. The Last Podcast on the Left (https://www.lastpodcastontheleft.com/) is a good one for trips.

Some audiobooks. Talk to Bebps for recs there.

Some good music. Gotta go with The Killers when you're burning down that highway skyline (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff0oWESdmH0).

Long-form improv comedy:

Neighbourhood Listen is one of the easiest to get into and doesn't have a ton of episodes if you want to listen from the start.  The first two seasons might be behind a paywall now, not sure

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UfzM66dxUc

Suggested episodes from the current season 3:  307 - The Victorian Trench Coat with Andrew Farmer, 309 - The Mysterious Prank Calls with Drew Tarver,  #302 - The Friendly Walking Thropal with Drew Droege

Teachers Lounge: behind a paywall but there should be a week free

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejVbGbbmh48

Comedy Bang bang -- like a million episodes of this and some of them are amazing.  The Jan 3rd episode from the is year, Episode 738 'Three Doctors…Oh No', with Ben Schwartz, Katie Dippold, Gil Ozeri is a decent introduction.

Informative:

Maintenance Phase -- about weight loss, mostly history about grift fad diets or bad science.  The Oprah episodes or the Fen-phen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenfluramine/phentermine episode was great

History of English Podcast -- historical linguistics podcast about how English came to be.

Where should we begin.  Relationship therapist -- pretty interesting listening to other people's problems

The audio book of Settlers.

There's random podcasts that will do an audio reading of it.

12 hours of white noise layered over an almost imperceptible endless version of Fabulous Secret Powers that fades in and out from the faint fringe hearing range of the human ear. Really helps you to take your mind off the road and begin interacting with your deepest thoughts on a personal level until the scenery just blurs by and seems to depart from resembling our Earthcentric concepts of "up" and "down" and "that tree is rushing right for us!"

If you like dance music I have some long extended mixes that do a lot of genre jumping (i.e. start with chill and deep house, and build up to big-room type electro)...
