DS is all you need.
People who do have a psp, often leave it sitting around collecting dust.

The DS is so good I will not buy a PSP

1) it is high-tech, and you fear quality hardware.
2) it doesn't come with spider-man 2 on umd any more.
3) it has a killer library of console quality content, as opposed to throwaway novelty fare, leaving you confused.
4) it has a beautiful high-res screen reminding you that you are in 2007 and not in the mid-90s when you were still cool.
5) it has loads of multimedia functions only accessible to those who can use a computer.
6) it is the greatest handheld of all time, and is like garlic to ninthings and their ancient busted hardware preferences.

Psp, when you first get it, is a thing of utter beauty.
then the shitty pad and analog nubbin come into play, never mind the loading (unless you be a pri8 argh)
If you have time and money to waste Willco, by all means give it a shot, don't say you were not warned though.

Well I was trying to convince him not to buy a PSP. I havent had too much experience with PSP but its a pretty good, versatile system from what I can tell

Anyway as a proud owner of both handhelds I must say the PSP is much better in terms of multimedia, music, movies, etc.
It's easy as fuck to pirate psp games btw. If you aren't going to downgrade your firmware/ use a custom firmware you might as well not buy one. PSP has a sexy screen, and the D-PAD is FINE. Plus you can get a nub attachment for like 2$ off ebay if you are some sort of nfag whiner.
Edit: Also its an emulation MONSTER. Near perfect PSX emu, SNES, perfect NES, GBA, Sega Master System, THE LIST GOES ON... but nintendo fans are used to paying for roms anyway so you may not like it.

The PSP is a compromise and comprimises never please anyone. It wants to be a mp3 player, but it also wants to be a game machne, but it also wants to be a web browser, but ti also wants to play movies. It compromises the viability of all those things to do all of them. So the DS is a better game machine, an ipod or creative or sansa or whatever is better for music, many things better for video, and it's no palm pilot.
And also, portable gaming LOAD TIMES. Sin against humanity.

Load times are nonexistant if you rip your UMDs to a memory stick. +1 PSP
Also, yes the music and movie playback isn't as good as say any standalone mp3/video player, but they are nice to have as options! The web browser is excellent.
DS is not better. Not at all.

How easy is it to emulate on the thing?

it's not terribly hard, but it might prove challenging for a ninthing with a fear of joysticks and buttons
