Xenogears
Wild Arms
FFVI, VII, VIII, Tactics
Chrono Trigger
Arc the Lad (<3)
Lufia II
Disgaea
Suikoden I, II, V
Kings Field I, Ancient Gates (?)

There is like an SRPG and FPS type RPGS in there, they rock though. I highly recommend the Arc the Lad series.

I played Dragon Warrior for Nintendo when I was a kid and I hated it (and every other rpg at that time). So DQ8 which I bought a few months ago will be the first time that I play a DQ game as an rpg fan.

I would have included Skies of Arcadia but I never could beat the second form of the final boss  :(

All kinds.

I do think Oblivion killed the Turn-based-JRPG star though.

I found the original Dragon Warrior more fun than DQ8 :(

That game is a black mark on my childhood.

:lol

I really love the "Every Level and Every weapon you get is important" type of gameplay in Dragon Warrior.

As far as DQ8. I'm not that fond of games where the stat system doesn't put to much important in small gains in stuff (meaning every small gain in a stat point doesn't = results), to the point where gains feel minuscule (Disgaea is the exception though <3).

I feel DQ8 took a more standard RPG approach instead of how the original did.

Well, don't get into RPG talk with me. I don't know much.

It's time like these where I wish I had a digital camera, so I could post a picture of Dragon Warrior in the garbage.

Huh? And that's why you don't care for DQVIII? The exploration should make up for that.

Lol same here. I hated the genre because of it. Secret of Mana was the game that made me finally like rpgs.

That was awesome, loved the overworld but I would love it if they went really old school.

I still don't understand your stats complaint. Please rephrase it.

Its not just a complaint about DQ8, its about RPGs in general (but I'm more harsh on DQ8 since its earlier games had put more importance in leveling).

Basically I felt as though the leveling system didn't really put importance in individual levels. You need to gain a bunch of levels before you see dramatic results. I liked in Dragon Warrior how you only had 24 levels? (If I remember correctly) and everytime you leveled up you were able to venture further out into the continent.

The Skill Points I did like since it was the only thing that felt worthwhile (to grind for). I just like the old school style of leveling.

I don't like

Lots of Levels = Small gains from each level

I do like

Less amount of Levels = More dramatic gains. Leveling up actually feels like an accomplishment

I can also go on about equipment but in this day and age RPGs need to be full of gear that you can find.

Ah.

Leveling up should be feel like an accomplishment, I agree. But I don't know, levels and stats really aren't why I play rpgs, it's the customization of them that makes me horny.

I really feel like making a thread over at GAF now.

Edit: I just did, with a little different title

I liked the ones highlighted, never played any of the rest except for Legend of Legaia..... and I FORCED myself through half of it before I lost my mind and had to stop playing..... 4 months later I literally gave it to someone for absolutely nothing and apparently they enjoyed the hell out of it..... so I guess it did something good.

My favorites:
Final Fantasy Tactics (only because of the grind you get to do on sweegy woods for a few hours that makes the game easy as pie).

Dragon Quest 8, Wow this game was pretty fun!  It was so old school and had some fun little graphics too it.  Plus getting all of the end game stuff monsters, treasures, other crap was a lot of fun.

Dragon Warrior 4, The best of the dragon warrior series.. but you'd have to be prepared for mad oldschool to sit through it.

Final Fantasy 2 (4), Final Fantasy 3 (6) are both greats, although cecil/kain beat out terra/locke any day.

Phantasy Star 4, holy SHIT this game is a GEM!  I played it for the first time a little over a year ago.... one of the greatest RPGs ever.

Zelda: A Link to the Past, you think Ocarina of Time was good?  This is where all of the cool shit originated from....  by far the best Zelda (my wife still refuses to ever play it, wtf?)

Half-Life, I know it's not really an RPG, but it has a really cool story!!

Xenogears....  you have to be prepared for long talks between characters, in depth and secret storylines, major development, and somewhat of a lack of a cool battle system (although when you fight with your guys on the ground the combos were SOOOOOOOOOO COOL when I first tried them!).

When you've completed all RPGs and you find yourself at a standstill with a lack of games........  you can sell your soul to the devil and play World of Warcraft.

Oh how could I have forgotten!?  Play Chrono Trigger too ;)

I actually played through that game (no not with Game+) recently and had a ton of fun doing it.  I looooove the Magus parts, and the underwater palace ;)
