Its not catchy like Chutes Too Narrow, and that alone may push away a lot of fans fond of seeing songs in popular tv commercials during breaks in episodes of 24. It's honestly a weird kinda shout out to the kind of lyrical brilliance and diverse sounds of their origin "Oh Inverted World". Really, just imagine OIW with higher production values and you pretty much have Wincing the Night Away.

A copy cat album? That's not really want I meant. While the spirit of OIW is carried by this album it marches to its own beat with sounds that properly emulate the experience of a sleepless night. In fact I would almost go as far as to say this album is best listened to in the wee morning hours. The use of synth is fantastic and never jarring, and the lyrics are the kind of word puzzles you'll spend a while trying to hammer out.

To be honest after listening to their first two cds a bit I always felt that Chutes Too Narrow was intended for the masses. Most of the lyrics were pretty straightforward but still full of the kind of ideas that seem a little pretentious if they arent at the end of a well-crafted word-maze, but I suppose that's kinda the charm of the album. I do find it hilarious the group got popular for a song off OIW because it was in that awful garden state movie and not anything from Chutes Too Narrow.

In short, its a great album. Buy it and decide if its their BEST album ;)
