So I saw Blade Runner a few weeks back. Thought it was okay. I talked to some people about the story and decided to give it another shot. Definitely much improved this viewing. Much like Full Metal Jacket, it seems that multiple viewings increase the entertainment level.
This time I started to just "get" the film. First off, Ford's acting, I actually like that he's such a dead drone in this film, because it drives the movie's point home: what exactly defines a human? Decker is the supposed human in Blade Runner, and yet, he has less emotion than the android replicants that decorate the film. Roy feels and looks human, and the way he wept for his lover really made me think.
One thing I can't catch though, is what the hell happened at the end of Roy and Decker's fight?

...

Decker wasnt human. Did you even watch the movie?
-
They hinted that he possibly could be a replicant. Hinted, but that's just about it.
-
Did you buy/rent the latest remastered release. Its quite a bit cleaner.

They've never clarified this.

I thought it was obvious. I guess that's why im a champion.

It really isn't. It's something that's debated even today.
-
The Nexus androids had a life expectancy of....what? Three years, tops? Roy was at the end of the line, which was his numero uno driving motivation for doing what he did. Thus, he just sorta died at the end of the fight with Decker.

Sort of off topic, but on topic with respect to questions about the endings of movies...
What's the consensus on the ending of Taxi Driver? Was it a dream, as Shake theorized, or did that really happen? When I first saw it indeed seemed like a dream. But later I remembered that shortly before the movie goes off, De Niro looks into his rearview mirror quickly in disgust; he sees something he doesn't like, most likely more "scum" on the streets. If it was a dream why would the city still have signs of the corruption Travis tried to get rid of? Considering everything else about the dream worked out in his favor in terms of how he perceived the world, this one difference sticks out to me.

Ridley Scott, after remaining coy for twenty years, stated in 2000 that Deckard is a replicant.[8]

Oh snaps

*crickets chirp*

Man, I gotta watch this again tonight

How does this change anything? The guy has to state something after the fact. That's like Spielberg saying that the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were really aliens, it was just offscreen.

:lol so true.

Willcowned yet again!

Do NOT buy it. WB is releasing the final cut of the film later this year. It is Ridley Scott's true director's cut of the film. The current director's cut isn't really his real cut of the movie.
And going by Kingdom of Heaven, Legend, and the like his director's cut will blow us away.
-
Too late Cheebs, I already picked up the remastered version of the best cut of the film. Go team shake! :hyper
-
I got the directors cut dvd.
-
Despite whatever the popular opinion is, I much prefer the DC.
Ford's deadpan, monotonous narration wasn't all that necessary to the character anyway, and the changes made to the film are for the better.
-
You guys realize you'll just end up being the final cut thats out this spring/summer again right? :lol
It's going to be AMAZING. Can't wait to see Ridley Scott's true director's cut. All of his DC's are fantastic.

Yes. :'(
But at least I don't have to wait until then. Plus, the disc set me back $7.50. I can live with rebuying it.
-
The final cut will be a bit more expensive. ;) Likely to be at least 4 disks.

I know. And I'll probably buy it when it gets marked down, or not at all if the Final Cut isn't much to my liking or vastly different than either existing cut.
-
Besides, Cheebs. This is Blade Runner and WB. AKA expect that 4 disc set to be delayed again. The remastered DC is probably the best we'll get for a while.

People over at DVD Talk noticed that amazon within the last week put up "Blade Runner - The Definitive Cut" and Ridley Scott's doc. guy who posts over at HTF hinted just this past week that is coming very soon.
The recent trends show a WB annoucement should be happening rather shortly.

I prefer DVDTalk. They always seem to be right on the money, whereas HTF can be hit or miss.
