I was all ready to go for the single disc, but I'm gonna have to end up getting the steelbook so long as the words "BEST" and "BUY" aren't plastered anywhere on the final cover.

Well, if I go there and some shit like that is going on, I'll go with 1-disc + Mean Streets.

Picked up the single disc several hours ago. Steel-bookers: have no fear, theres no BB (or in my case, Futureshop) logos to be found. The Departed DVD kiosk is a thing of beauty though. They had about 200 copies of the single disc, about 75 of the SE, then about 25 each of BRD and HD-DVD. A thing of beauty. I got the first copy   ;)

Is there any chance the 2-Disc would be less than $25 at Hollywood Video? I've got $50 on me and my friend asked me to pick him up a copy on loan, but I don't know if I can afford that. :/

Not when its a Martin Scorsese film. Even when its a failure (ie. Kundun or Gangs of New York), its always worth a watch.

$20 is a lot of money, and I'm always wary about DVD buying. I'll rent it tonight along with Goodfellas/Taxi Driver

When Collin leaves the office in the beginning, the secretary reaches her cleavage right into the light, and gives him the sexy voice. Then she leans back, and basically grunts at DiCaprio that he "can go in there now". :rofl

Kids and Rules of Attraction were packaged together.  I hadn't seen Kids in like 10 years and I love the book The Rules of Attraction, so I figured what the fuck.  But yes, at least Kids is better than Casino.  It doesn't take much to be better than Casino.

Casino is (at best) a Goodfellas rehash.  At least Kids, while by no means great, is a nice lil bit of transgressive film-making. Not great, but interesting to watch.  At least a few times.  That's the problem with transgressive art.

What do you not find interesting about it?  I think it's the only near slam dunk Harmony Korine and Larry Clark have been involved with.  It vaguely reminds me of some public service juvenile delinquent doc from the 50s driven to ridiculous lengths of perversion  (the bad acting helps sell this).  Or when I hear old people bitch about teenagers, my head is immediately filled with the blatantly ridiculous stuff from Kids.

I like the idea of Larry Clark, but the reality never quite lived up to the possibilities.  He could've been a modern day, legit, exploitation flick maker.  Instead we got Kids and, well, some other crap.  Harmony Korine has his moments, though.

That's pretty much what made it uninteresting to me.  The situation seemed so over the top ridiculous that it just became annoying.  The only thing I found unexpected was the end rape scene which was just awesome.  I'll give it that.  But I found the rest of the movie unbearably boring.  Like you said, it seemed like a propaganda film gone wrong.  And god was the acting terrible.  Like Ben Affleck terrible.

The book is basically a fuck fest of dumb college students (with cameo of Patrick Bateman of American Psycho!), so  cinemax with TV personalities sounds accurate.  Jessica Biel show her titties?

American Psycho isn't that great either.  Considering the source material, the adaptation is obnoxiously tame and is bogged down with some seriously shoddy acting.  Bale is the only thing that keeps it afloat and Willem Dafoe certainly didn't hurt matters.  There's really nothing notable about it.

IN THIS THREAD, WE LAUGH AT THOSE WHO BOUGHT THE SINGLE DISC:

1. Solo
2. ???

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

I will iterate for the 10th time or so now: the extras sound piss poor, and I dont have any interest in them. So I'll take my $5 savings and stick with the barebones, thank you very much. Are you buying the DVD for the film or the half-baked extras anyway?

No lol; I saw TGTBATU for the first time a looong time ago lol. Definitely the best movie I've seen since Brazil.

It's amazing on every level - the acting is powerful, the writing is very sharp, and the pacing is perfectly handled. The movie achieves things in 5-10 minutes that other movies might take 30 minutes to establish

Please. TD is a great work from a great director, while TGTBATU is a masterwork from a great director. TGTBATU is basically Leone's Goodfellas (or Taxi Driver, or whatever you consider Scorsese best). TD is on the level of A Fistful Of Dollars, but its not TGTBATU, or even a Few A Few Dollars More. And I love The Departed. But objectively speaking, its not Marty's VERY best, and its not better than Leone's best.

I wouldn't even compare the two. TGTBATU is an undisputed classic, and one of the best movies of all time. The Departed is an amazing movie and one of the greatest crime movies ever as far as I'm concerned, but I won't put it up there with classics like Leone's masterpiece; it wouldn't be fair.

That being said, The Departed is fucking amazing. Review for later tonight :violin

Exactly. For once, PD, you and I are in total agreement! TGTBATU is a classic and a masterpiece, still loved dearly by many 41 years later! While The Departed is a great film, but not the best in Scorsese's stable, and not one that time will remember.

Also agree that they shouldnt be compared, and Im not sure why Shake even asked. A spaghetti western from Italy in the 60's and a crime movie from America in the 00's dont share much in common.
Title: Re: DVDeparted Duesday -- 2/13/07
Post by: Phoenix Dark on February 15, 2007, 10:55:26 AM
Who knows The Departed could be remembered in 30-40 years as a classic crime movie. I've noticed when reading Rotten Tomatoes that many movies we consider classic today weren't even recognized as great when they came out; TGTBATU wasn't taken seriously for awhile by guys like Ebert who didn't respect the genre, almost as if it was the videogame genre of film.

Although I haven't seen Goodfellas unedited, I actuallyed enjoyed this more. But the thing I noticed about The Departed and Taxi Driver is the amazing pacing and storytelling; both get right to the point without feeling rushed or bogged down in needless details. You get a good sense of the characters rather quickly, and after that their various personalities are re-inforced subtly and loudly, yet without feeling like needless information.

I will forever love Peter Jackson for LOTR, but even I can't deny that he has a problem when it comes to having far too many repetitive scenes to develop characters. This is especially evident in the beginning of King Kong, as well as the buildup of the relationship; a couple or more scenes could have achieved what he felt the need to do over the course of an hour. He's shown signs of being able to subtly do this though. For instance, the scene in FOTR where Frodo drops the ring and Boromir picks it up. In that one short scene he capures the nine's reaction to the ring perfectly; more impressive is the fact that the scene is not in the book. Right there you know all you need to know about each person's feelings on the ring.

I meant OUATITW.

Why didn't you say so >:( :-*

I definitely liked The Departed much more. The movie never dragged on due to some amazing acting and great writing. OUATITW, as I said earlier, came on brilliantly and ended brilliantly, but much of the stuff between was rather average. The wife was pretty boring when she had her clothes on, and never really struck me as a strong character. Overall I'd give the movie an 8, although I plan on watching it again. It's damn good imo, just not amazing.

On the other hand, The Departed is amazing.

As totally shallow as it sounds, its true: I have never appreciated OUATITW as much as I probably could or should, simply due to the casting. I really think Leone captured lightning in a bottle with the cast of TGTBATU, and I would have loved to see them return here. Bronson is alright, and Robards is serviceable, and yes, Fonda is badass, but I cant help but watch the film and think "gee, Eli Wallach should have played Cheyenne, Van Cleef should have played Fonda's role, and Clint should be Harmonica".

I agree to a degree. Although personally I thought Bronson was very good in his role; Clint would have been able to take the role to another level, but I don't think the movie suffered without him. I read on Rotten Tomatoes that around the time OUATITW was released Leone's relationship with Eastood soured, and Leone actually said Robert DeNiro was a "real" actor, and Eastwood wasn't. Although when Leone died Eastwood didn't hold anything against him, and dedicated Unforgiven to him.

In terms of the other roles, they were definitely a bit flat. I would actually go against the grain a bit on Fonda; his role didn't impress me much either. In the beginning when he killed the family I thought he was amazing, but as the movie went on he seemed to stray away from just being a psychotic gunman for hire to a ruthless businessman, somewhat like the guy who hired him. Although that one family scene was definitely pure evil, I would have liked to see him do some other things to show just how evil he was. For instance in Pan's Labryinth the villian shows you how ruthless he is around 4 times, yet each time he becomes even more psychotic looking.

Cheyenne was also another subpar character. When he was first revealed he came off as a straight up badass killer, yet with the snap of the fingers he became this weird prop for comedy. It was established quite early that he was also a ruthless killer, but the majority of the movie doesn't portray him as such.

Another fun realization:

You can clearly see that the items Damon returns home with before being killed are the same that Costello bought for him in the opening scene, as a kid. Awesome.

Maybe I could have figured that out if I saw the movie 100 times  :'( :punch

The two disk set is only like $20-23; that's actually cheaper than the Sin City SE, which has been out much longer.

Yeah, but the Sin City EE trounces TD in terms of extra material. However, TD is still a slightly better film than Sin City, so its a difficult choice.

Slightly? I dunno, The Departed blew my mind so much; the main reason I want to get Sin City is because I haven't seen it in ages.

Last night I watched some of TD again to see that part you were talking about (with the shots back and forth to Leo and Wahlberg), and I just forgot what I was doing and watched like 30min of it lol. The movie just sucks you in. I'm trying not to watch it again because I want to just get the widescreen one, possibly today

I went to Walmart and got the two disk set for TD

It's not the steel one though. While the steel one looks damn awesome and is the same price, both have the same features so I'm not worried. Besides Walmart only had this one.

Walmart...lol

Yeah, but after checking it out in the store today, its really not as cool as it sounds. The slipcover it comes with is extra big, so when you remove the script there's about half an inch of space, and the script itself is poorly printed. Instead of a small paperback, its just like one big comic book, staples and all. Meh.

Yup. Its kinda glossy, right? That's the regular SE. I think it looks so much better than all the other art, including the BB tin.

However, if the BB tin had the SE artwork on it, it would be hot sex. Now I'm torn between cool art or a sexy tin. Or both. :(

Just watched the movie again.  :bow

But now, I have a question/possible stupid theory...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Was Wahlberg's character secretly working for the FBI? Once Sullivan found out Costello was an FBI informant he turned on him. And of course shortly after that Sullivan got wasted.

Now, far more crazier is the idea that...what if Costello had told Wahlberg's character that Sullivan was the rat? Thus in order to cover their own asses the FBI got rid of Wahlberg?

It's the kind of movie I can watch and never get bored - usually when I watch something for the second time (especially when the viewing is within the same week that I watched it the first time) I get a little antsy. I want the movie to hurry up and get to my favorite parts while skipping past my least favorite parts.

Well here...I can honestly say there aren't any parts that turn me off. Instead scenes range from their level of awesome-ness. For instance, the opening to the movie/slow buildup to Jack's face being shown ("I did well in school too. That's what they call a paradox"..."I've got nothing against the black chappies, but if there's one thing they don't understand it's that no one gives it to you. You have to take it"...etc etc) and the scene where Leo first sees the psychiatrist. The quite, sad music in that scene really helps takes it to another level, as does Leo's brilliant acting.

Why the fuck didn't he get nominated for best actor? I know he got it for Blood Diamond (which looks cool to me) but COME ON.

Personally I thought the deleted scenes, especially the one where Costello speaks with Costigan Sr., would have been great additions. However, surprisingly the deleted scenes were really only slight alterations of pre-existing scenes, besides the one above and the one where Costigan sits before the sunset.

I thought both of those scenes would be good additions. Although the placement of the Costigan Sr. scene could have fit better in a different part of the movie.

Anyway I just watched Scorcese on Scorsese. Very interesting; I really want to see Mean Streets now. Some of the other movies featured seemed a bit boring - like Kundum or his more romantic stuff. And also I noticed Casino wasn't featured.  ???
