I was all ready to go for the single disc, but I'm gonna have to end up getting the steelbook so long as the words "BEST" and "BUY" aren't plastered anywhere on the final cover.
Picked up the single disc several hours ago. Steel-bookers: have no fear, theres no BB (or in my case, Futureshop) logos to be found. The Departed DVD kiosk is a thing of beauty though. They had about 200 copies of the single disc, about 75 of the SE, then about 25 each of BRD and HD-DVD. A thing of beauty. I got the first copy ;)

Does Futureshop open at 8 am where you live?
He is renting it. :lol
PD -- If you don't buy this, I will smash your GI Joes to pieces. No joke. :punch

Renting is so 1995.
Not when its a Martin Scorsese film. Even when its a failure (ie. Kundun or Gangs of New York), its always worth a watch.
This tin case is a lot nicer than I expected it to be and the special features are pretty interesting. Not disappointed with spending the extra cash at all so far.

One thing that always gets a laugh:
When Collin leaves the office in the beginning, the secretary reaches her cleavage right into the light, and gives him the sexy voice. Then she leans back, and basically grunts at DiCaprio that he "can go in there now". :rofl
IN THIS THREAD, WE LAUGH AT THOSE WHO BOUGHT THE SINGLE DISC:

2. ???

I spent nearly 200 dollars in movies today
I spent nearly 200 dollars in movies today and I didn't get The Departed. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!
Never. I will never watch The Departed until you are dead, Shake. This is a call to arms to get other forumgoers to drive you to suicide.

Uh, I honestly don't care. Go watch Moulin Rouge or something, while us MEN discuss good movies. ;)
Whatever, dude. I don't care. Go watch shitty movies with Willco and FoC while the rest of us enjoy ourselves. ;)
Dude.. you don't think Casino is decent?Whatever, dude. I don't care. Go watch shitty movies with Willco and FoC while the rest of us enjoy ourselves. ;)
It's difficult to take insults from someone that thinks Casino is decent.
I didn't think people liked Rules of Attraction.
Oh well, you know what they say about opinions...
I love you, baby. But I couldn't even watch Kids stoned. I find everything interesting when I'm stoned.

God I hate Larry Clark.
That's pretty much what made it uninteresting to me. The situation seemed so over the top ridiculous that it just became annoying. The only thing I found unexpected was the end rape scene which was just awesome. I'll give it that. But I found the rest of the movie unbearably boring. Like you said, it seemed like a propaganda film gone wrong. And god was the acting terrible. Like Ben Affleck terrible.I love you, baby. But I couldn't even watch Kids stoned. I find everything interesting when I'm stoned.
What do you not find interesting about it? I think it's the only near slam dunk Harmony Korine and Larry Clark have been involved with. It vaguely reminds me of some public service juvenile delinquent doc from the 50s driven to ridiculous lengths of perversion (the bad acting helps sell this). Or when I hear old people bitch about teenagers, my head is immediately filled with the blatantly ridiculous stuff from Kids.
So wait, is Rules of Attraction no good? I remember it being well-received when it came out? It's my second favorite Bret Easton Ellis book, so I need to see the movie.
It got mixed reviews and it is pretty boring.

Its a Skinemax soft-core flick with television personalities.
So basically, his two best books were wasted on shitty adaptations? :( At least American Psycho turned out okay.
American Psycho isn't that great either. Considering the source material, the adaptation is obnoxiously tame and is bogged down with some seriously shoddy acting. Bale is the only thing that keeps it afloat and Willem Dafoe certainly didn't hurt matters. There's really nothing notable about it.
I forgot about Bale running around naked with a chainsaw. If they'd kept that up for 90 minutes, the result would have definitely been better than American Psycho as it is.

I dont know where you got the idea that my life will be incomplete without the 2 disc set, but its wrong. Extras about Boston criminals and deleted scenes dont get me all hot and bothered. You enjoy them, and leave me to enjoy the movie.
If you ratchet down the bording-on-overkill The Departed worship, then perhaps I will. I love the movie too, but its a bit much.
What's so great about The Departed?
Shake, you're starting to make me think The Departed sucks.
Who cares, you'd probably bitch about it anyway.
I just got done watching it. HOLY SHIT
This is not only the best movie I've seen in a long time, it's also one of the best crime movies I've ever seen - perhaps the best. I'm blown away. Review for tomorrow

So, when you mean "best movie in a long time", you mean including TGTBATU?

Please. TD is a great work from a great director, while TGTBATU is a masterwork from a great director. TGTBATU is basically Leone's Goodfellas (or Taxi Driver, or whatever you consider Scorsese best). TD is on the level of A Fistful Of Dollars, but its not TGTBATU, or even a Few A Few Dollars More. And I love The Departed. But objectively speaking, its not Marty's VERY best, and its not better than Leone's best.
I meant OUATITW.
How long has Ebert been doing movie reviews
How long has Ebert been doing movie reviewsHe actually started out doing porn reviews (one of the many things that make me think he's a hack) and one of the movies he reviewed was Deep Throat so that means he was at least on the shit end of reviewers until '77.

Burn.Feel good about it, might make you come out of the closet one day.
Wow, this is completely untrue. He's been a crit for the Sun Times since the late 60s.Actually if you read his DVD review of Deep Throat he says that he reviewed Deep Throat when it first came out, making me think that they have a certain type of writer/reviewer assigned to porn.
You're so full of shit, nintenho. How about you talk about things you actually know about?

As totally shallow as it sounds, its true: I have never appreciated OUATITW as much as I probably could or should, simply due to the casting. I really think Leone captured lightning in a bottle with the cast of TGTBATU, and I would have loved to see them return here. Bronson is alright, and Robards is serviceable, and yes, Fonda is badass, but I cant help but watch the film and think "gee, Eli Wallach should have played Cheyenne, Van Cleef should have played Fonda's role, and Clint should be Harmonica".
Wait, what? You rented the FOOLSCREEN version?!
This movie probably looks like utter crap compared to the 2:40:1 widescreen version. :yuck
I don't even know how they can pull of some shots in fullscreen. In the office towards the beginning, did they do alot of cutting or panning from Sheen/Marky Mark and DiCaprio (esp. the overhead shots)?
Well he wrote porn in the '70s!
idiots.
No, can you sue your church for making you a half-distinguished mentally-challenged bitch?
http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050210/REVIEWS/50211001/1023
that was the article that I first read where he mentioned porn reviews were his regular job.
http://www.chicagomag.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=8642F5EFCEA14A939100AB7214F31861&nm=Archives&type=pubtitles&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle+Title&mid=61BFC65300D24DB58350C761094153A1&tier=3&aid=683382C8C8D3463E9708F634A2B43866&dtxt=December+2005
googled and saw that he wrote a porn too (previous source from "traditionalvalues.org" said multiple so I said that) so sorry if I made it look like he was a prominent writer.
and phoenixdark, if you're going to have an opinion on things then have an opinion, if you're going to say random things then stfu.
Did you read it? It was part of his job while at the Sun Times. Porn in the early 70s was as close to legit as it ever was. Read his Deep Throat review to get an idea of the climate.I read that a long time ago and thought that meant that he started out writing porn reviews.
Went shoppin today ^_^
Got the Departed Best Buy Limited Edition two disc steel thing. only 23 bucks tax freeeee? Niceeeeee
Also picked up Lost Planet.
You people are fools for rating Children of Men above The Departed. The Departed gives Children of Men daily cleveland steamers.

Now, about viewing each repeatedly, I'd have to say they're about even. But TD is faaaaar more entertaining.
Another fun realization:spoiler (click to show/hide)You can clearly see that the items Damon returns home with before being killed are the same that Costello bought for him in the opening scene, as a kid. Awesome.[close]
He has comic books?

Well, maybe not those, but he has the eggs, two cartons of milk, along with "french donuts" Madolyn turned him onto. Kind of a cool way of showing what a "follower" he was, all the things he eats were suggested by other people. :P
Yeah, but the Sin City EE trounces TD in terms of extra material. However, TD is still a slightly better film than Sin City, so its a difficult choice.
If you live near a Best Buy, go get the 2-disc steelbook. TODAY.
what script? wtf are you talking about?
Son of a fucking bitch. That sounds cool.what script? wtf are you talking about?
The Target DVD came packaged with a small, glossy shooting script for the film.
Yeah, but after checking it out in the store today, its really not as cool as it sounds. The slipcover it comes with is extra big, so when you remove the script there's about half an inch of space, and the script itself is poorly printed. Instead of a small paperback, its just like one big comic book, staples and all. Meh.oh gay. Still, it would be cool to have for shits and giggles. I might find myself buying another copy for that and then giving it to my mom.
Pics of the Target edition: :yuck

Having seen the slipcover in person, I must say I'm glad I went with the regular 2-Disc over this. Plus, the script is pocket sized, and apparently barely legible.
Yeah, its embossed. <3
The Target slipcover has just about the worst art I could imagine. I mean, Nicholson looks like a fuckin' pothead on the cover! >:(
Just another case of the Best Actor of the year not even getting recognition. Also, some of the best parts of the movie are the little moments of wicked dark comedy. "She fell funny" comes instantly to mind.

Wait what? That wasn't Mr. French...
FUCK!!!!1
I just found out that Gamestop is no longer paying cash for DVDs. WTF?!?!
>:(
yeah the steelbook is pretty nice. I like it.
Personally I thought the deleted scenes, especially the one where Costello speaks with Costigan Sr., would have been great additions. However, surprisingly the deleted scenes were really only slight alterations of pre-existing scenes, besides the one above and the one where Costigan sits before the sunset.
Motherfucker you better send me Brazil :-*
Motherfucker you better send me Brazil :-*
You better name your price. :-*
Gonna watch the TCM thing now
Yeah, Casino, among a couple other films, were missing. Still, they basically covered the best of Scorsese.
Do you have a car?
Do you have a car?
Living with your parents has its advantages.
Nah, they have to go pick up some supplies at Lowe's since they're fixing up my house, so I asked them to give me a lift to the Best Buy across the street. :-*:lol
Oh, I pretty much always have to help. You see, going to Best Buy isn't a free ride.
Pun very much intended.
I am downloading The Departed so I can watch it on my PSP when I go to California. Marty Scorcese won't steal my money.
