Title: Is widescreen something you get used to or should it look better right away?
Post by: ananus on February 17, 2007, 12:46:09 AM
Looking at widescreen tvs and monitors I feel the 4:3 aspect ratio actually looks better, but since that's what I always looked at my eyes might be a bit biased.

4:3 is fine, but widescreen is cool too.

Widescreen is basically a requirement to view most modern films in their OAR, but if you're a TV kinda guy then fullscreen can definitely cut it. Me? I'm stuck with an SD fullscreen TV, waiting for HDTV prices to drop to pick up a monster widescreen. :'(

Even as a kid I would complain about watching movies at home, because they looked different from the theater (widescreen there, mostly fullscreen on TV/VHS). But DVD changed all of that. Now fullscreen looks completely wrong, even when I'm watching a 1:33:1 OAR film. I just don't really like the look of things "filling my screen", because now I always imagine what information I'm missing on the right and left sides.

Doesn't really make any difference in quality of a movie or show but it's fucking convenient for games.

what did you test it on?

Eh, it took me a while to get used to it.  It feels so much better now though.  4:3 looks really weird now

I used to not really like it, but the more dvds I watched the more I adjusted.

I love Widescreen. Having used it for a while...going back to 4:3..the image feels cramped in.

I want to get a newer HDTV in my Room thats is has a physical 16:9 screen (its 4:3) but is capable of 16:9.

Once you go widescreen monitor, there's NO TURNING BACK.  Widescreen + computar == anal sex

you get used to it after a bunch of weeks, and afterwards there's simply no turning back

it makes for a much more immersive experience

and it's possible to get cheap 26-32 inches LCD HDTVs for a few hundred bucks, very few now have any valuable excuse not to upgrade their set

What kind of monitor do you have? I have a 17' one from eMachines, and I just watched TD in widescreen for the first time. I noticed in one scene where I actually saw less than what I saw in fullscreen. There's a scene where Costello is eating crab, and his plate is towards the bottom of the screen. In fullscreen I could see his plate, as well as the butter he was using as dip. In widescreen I didn't see it.

?

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 225bw here at home (22") and a Dell 2407 at work (24").  The 22"er only cost me like 300 bucks, and it is a stellar display.  I kinda wish I had grabbed a second.

i still use the same 17 inches LCD monitor because most websites are made to accomodate a 1024 x 768 resolution

With a widescreen monitor, you generally don't fullscreen many programs, except for various pro programs that have lots of interface to accomodate and work better spread out.

Yeah, but then 1:85:1 films would look even more fucked up.

How so? You just get some vertical bars.

Really?

Of course. Just like displaying an image too wide for your 16:9 TV gives horizontal bars, displaying a ratio too "skinny" for your uber wide display would just result in vertical bars. Just like when you watch 4:3 content on your 16:9 display.

Still, a 2:35:1 TV would suck. Imagine watching a fullscreen movie/TV show on that? :yuck

Thats why I said I would buy it in a heartbeat. Many wouldnt, and thats why such a model will never be marketed. 16:9 is the happy medium.

I'm sorry, when people tell me they're not American I automatically assume they're from Europe; even if they look asian I just assume the Euro pollution fucked up their eyes and made them impotent.
