Title: Fox Is Remaking "The Day The Earth Stood Still", Out May 9th 2008.
Post by: Cheebs on February 22, 2007, 04:26:48 PM
Well this came out of nowhere. Fox has announced May 9th 2008 as the release for a remake of the sci-fi classic The Day The Earth Stood Still.
http://www.cinematical.com/2007/02/21/the-day-the-earth-got-remade/

Don't know how this will turn out. The original was rather serious and nearly as much a drama as sci-fi. It was very much a cold-war era film about attempting to bring an end to war.

Fox is going to fuck this up, I know it.  :-\

Uh. Day the Earth Stood Still is one of the all time classics. Easily the greatest sci-fi film of the 50's. I would place it alongside Metropolis & 2001 as the most important sci-fi films in pre-star wars world.

Of course not but it is a recognized classic unlike say War of the Worlds or Forbidden Planet that have fans but are by no means classic cinema like TDTESS is.

Shake's right - movie blows.  Just because it's considered a classic of the sci-fi genre doesn't mean much; the genre was largely crap until the late 70s.

is that a veiled bash at 2001 sir?  :-*

Also early 70's had Logan's FUCKING Run. Awesome movie.

But I never said it blows. ???

So why does your friend suck for liking it? Better than liking Mean Girls or some shit.

Because he can't sit through Citizen Kane or any legendary western, yet heralds this as the "best old film"?

BTW, he does like Mean Girls.

Meh, it's not horrible I admit. 6.5/10 is not a horrible score imo.

Day the Earth Stood Still is classic like those movies about giant ants terrorizing towns: they were big amazing feats when they came out, but today they don't stand on their own. Unlike movies like Clash of the Titans, which is still awesome today

Clash of the Titans has the exact same problem; the effect driven novelty has worn quite thin over time.  For use with Harryhausen appreciation only.

King Kong was his initial inspiration.

The watchable parts of all these movies could be isolated to a single Youtube clip.  Harryhausen was an amazing effect artist, but I really don't think any of his films would hold water without that crutch.  He's sort of like the George Lucas of yesteryear.

How many movies based on Greek mythology are truthful to a T anyway? *yawn*

Uh, why?  It looks completely faithful to Frank Miller's story.  Unless they all survive, it's fine.

Again, what does 300 have to do with this?  The movie looks Sin City-like in faithfulness.  I'm not asking for realisim from Jason and the Argonauts, because the events never happened, but the story it is based on is raped for a sappy movie adventure ending so PD doesn't cry afterwards.

Faithful to the novel, not faithful to Greek mythology, which you apparently are quite a fan of.

Shake, what you just said made no sense.

300 is faithful to the story it is based on, Jason and the Argonauts is not.  This would be like Zach Snyder ending 300 with all the Spartans surviving.

Don't leave children around homosexuals and don't argue with people who don't have high school diplomas - that's my stance.  :elephant

What are you guys on crack?

Jason and the Argonauts is completely innacurate to the story.  300 is not.

How are you two even debating this?

300 doesn't even try to be a historical representation of actual events.  Saying it strays from the source material is entirely bogus.

This isn't even relevant!  The entire discussion is that Jason and the Argonauts isn't failthful to the story, which 300 is.  Why this got brought up is beyond me.

O WAIT I KNOW SHAKE IS A DUMMY
