Title: LOTR Online - IT'S GOOD
Post by: TVC15 on February 23, 2007, 11:32:41 PM
Pound for pound, it's a PVE WOW clone, but fuck, when you look this good, I'm cool with that.

This is a pretty game.  Snapped some shots on my machine.  I got it locked at 60fps, but there are some drops being caused by glitches (ie. there are some frame drops that have nothing to do with what's going on on screen at the time):

Let's take this to 56k NO town

I actually liked the look better than Oblivion.

I posted my thoughts over on GAF, but the game is basically a reskinned WoW, for better and for worse. If you've spent any time playing that and enjoy it, I would recommend it over this game. However, if you were disenchanted with WoW because of lack of content or just want a "new Azeroth" to level up in, you can do FAR worse than LOTR Online-Vanguard, for example. ;p

I honestly can't wait for a new good MMORPG like WoW. The first time you play WoW is amazing, so I want that feeling back again.
then get lotr online, TVC is right its GOOD.

My GOD this game is full of babies. So I create a hobbit burglar named Teabagz, because it wouldn't let me create Dildo Buggerins. I clear the dumb little intro instance and suddenly I get whined at because I am "OOC" with the name "Teabagz". I informed everyone that my character is actually a Klingon shrunk down to a short stature and I'm looking for my father Darth Vader, and that the only way I can find him is if I teabag every Elf in Kalimdor. This did not appease the RP fegs, who were having a huge WoW bash session in the OOC chat channel -- seriously, they whined about how their raid gear got invalidated by BC; they bawled about how Blizzard pissed all over them for making Tier 2/3 gear worthless; they bawled about how Blizzard caters to the "stupid casuals who don't take the Warcraft universe seriously"; they whined about how all everyone cares about is loot and powergaming and ganking and not living a virtual alternate life as something NOT morbidly obese and friendless.  Basically, it was a chat packed with ManaBytes.

I asked them what made this Robert Jordan universe so special and they told me "f u, this game is for FANS". I said I'd read the Elric books too and kinda liked them. Then they yammered on and on about how COMMUNITY SHOULD RUN THE GAME and I said COMMUNITY RUINS THE GAME LOL and that PLAYERS ARE SIMPLY DESIGN FLAWS and that I wanted to hang out with a bunch of pretend Wookies as much as I wanted to hang out with them in high school: i.e. NOT AT ALL.

It's like a second-rate WoW in playability -- UI design is a bit subpar even as it rips WoW, and the font choices are ugh, especially at high resolutions.

Haha, I noticed that stuff too last night, Drinky.  I just think the jaded, bitter MMO fans are the people that turn up for stress tests.  I found it kinda funny.

After playing a bit more, it's definitely not a "perfect" rip of WoW, but it's still pretty good.

And Ruzbeh, let me guess, you LOVE FF11?

Its a generic licensed game meant to prey on people who are willing to settle if they can get something 'new'.

Well..I wouldnt go that far. I think Warhammer is going to rock. If anyone can challenge Blizzard its Mythic. Mythic designed the MMORPG that Blizzard took most of the ideas for WoW from after all.

LOTR just looks like some DX9 demo with famous, but very old license people only like cause it has the guy from PotC in it. Im sure the mechanics are solid, its not HARD to make a passible MMORPG, call me when an MMORPG tries some new stuff and ill think about PAYING MONEY for it.

Warhammer will rock, im excited for it, but ill keep playin WoW too.

You pretty much nailed it.  After the stress test is over, I'll never touch it again, but I'm sure the uber-LOTR fans will be happy with it, especially if they haven't already played WoW.

But I mean, MMOs fall into 2 categories: Disasters and Non-disasters.  This is decidedly a Non-disaster, even if it isn't the most daring MMO out there.  I think Turbine was probably in a position where they had to make a "safe" game after Asheron's Call 2 rape raped their rep.

I think it'll fit the same kinda spot FF11 does for FF fans. Enough money will go in to keep it going, but thats about it.

To be honest thats sorta the way MMORPGs SHOULD be as it was the way things were back when it was just Text Based MUDs. There was ACTUALLY a world for almost everyone. Its nice to see that starting to develop with MMORPGs whether or not there's a world yet that appeals to me exactly.

I've been playing LOTRO but I think I'm going to cancel and just stick with wow, it's alright, but I find it a lot more difficult to find out what to do, and I think Azaroth is cooler than Middle-Earth. Plus despite having a beefy comp LOTRO has odd stuttering issues and though I was playing on ultra high settings putting them on normal didn't make any difference.

mmos just get boring now.  to make a game truly fun and constant, creaters would have to come out with new areas to explore every couple of weeks.
