Title: When will Warp and Kenji Eno return to save us from gaming mediocrity?
Post by: Ichirou on February 26, 2007, 09:42:57 AM
Warp was one of the most ass-kickingly brilliant video game makers in the 32-bit era.  D was a fantastic game, then came the inimitable Real Sound and Enemy Zero, games which revolutionized how sound was used in gaming.  However, their masterpiece was definitely D2.  Unfortunately, the US version had all scenes of tentacle sex removed, but the censorship did nothing to diminish the power of that particular magnum opus.

The Silent Hills, the Resident Evils, they are nothing before the power of D.  When will Kenji Eno return? They say a hero is commiiing, I don't want to stand in his waaayyyyy...

Seriously, Warp sucked, but they dropped off the face of the Earth quite suddenly...and then in 2006 Kenji Eno revealed he's working on a game that features a new controller...D3 for the Wii...I guarantee it, dudes.

So is D good, or are you just pulling shit? You say Warp sucks but D is good? I've wanted to try D. I doubt it'd top the plot and themes from SH though. Since that entire genre has shit gameplay, the only thing thriving on it is the plot: SH does this miraciously.

D was ok, but iirc it was slow as fuck. I mean Silent Hill managed to give me greater chills at a faster pace. I played through most of D on the PSOne and god damn did it move slow.

I think this is one of those nostalgia fueled things. Kinda like me and Tech Romancer.

Silent Hill 1 is pretty bad I think. The controls are so ugh.

2 was the best, complete package wise. I think SH1 kinda beats D in terms of creeping me the hell out tho.

D was good for its time, but I don't think most people were exposed to it until after RE made survival horror chic.  By RE standards, it's kind of tame and easy, but it's still atmospheric.  It's more of a graphic adventure than anything else.  Don't hold it against it that it was made in an era when 3d gaming was still largely trial and error.

Enemy Zero isn't great, but it gets credit for trying something new and almost making it work.

I dig D2 a lot, though.  By no means perfect, it's Warp's best game.  Or at least I found it neat at the time.  And yes, I do think a Wii take on D2 could be fun.  Too bad the Wii can't even meet the image quality of the Dreamcast :(

Kenji Eno gave fun interviews, he came across as so pompous and arrogant on the page!

I used to have fond memories of D (I rented it three or four times until I beat it), but I replayed it several years later, after FFVIII came out and was shocked at how badly it had aged.

I'm still thinking D3's gonna be on the Wii.  I believe it to be true.

All their games (that I have played) always seemed to reach just a bit beyond their grasp.  They just about got everything right, but there'd always be a few little things that would prevent their games from reviewing well or becoming that attractive to gamers.

Wikipedia says one of the folks from Warp ended up working on ICO.  Doesn't surprise me at all.
