Title: My Rant: "Mature games"
Post by: Tigerriot on February 26, 2007, 01:38:11 PM
I absolutely cannot stand it when people refer to graphically violent games as "mature games".  Of course I know the ESRB rating for games with graphic violence is "Mature", but it still bothers me when it's used in speaking about such games.

The reason being that I see nothing truly mature about playing a game like "Manhunt".  In fact, I think it's about as immature an activity as graphitti on a public building, or fights after school.

If someone wants to call something "mature", they should refer to something like saving some money in the bank, or buying a house, or raising a child in a proper way, or getting married.  Those things are mature behavior, not savaging a dude in a jail cell in Manhunt. /rant

Um, the rating of a game isn't an indicator of the how mature the content is.  The rating states that the PERSON PLAYING the game should be mature, ie. not overly sensitive, easily offended, and not delusional.

Dumbass.

Some games like DMC shouldn't be mature, but rather rated T. I mean, when you think about it, DMC isn't as gory or have as much mature content/themes like other Rated M games. I kinda wonder what the prerequisites for rated M are, because it seems that anything with blood gets M slapped on it.

Wouldn't the definition of a dumbass include someone replying to a thread without reading the entire thing first?  I sure hope so.  ::)

I mentioned in the second sentence of this thread, that I realized the ESRB rating is where the word "mature" originates.  However, people often use that term in conversation to refer to games that they think are "for adults", and in that context I find it ridiculous.  Therefore i'm ranting that I find the use of that term to describe obnoxious games is annoying, and I wish it would stop.  Teenagers seem to equate the word "mature" with "cool", and I honestly believe that makes some idiots think the game is that much cooler to play.  It's just a sad commentary on society when people are referring to such things as "mature", when it couldn't be further from the truth.

That's what the term means.  Not everything that is "for adults" is mature.  Do you think something as base as pornography is mature?  No, of course it isn't.  Is it something that is "for adults" and people of an age where they are no longer impressionable?  Yes, of course it is.

Dumbass.

Tiggeriot has confused the idiom with the actual definition, it seems. Don't go forcing your idioms on us, kiddy gamer!

To prove his point, Tigerriot has subjected a bunch of 8 year olds to the non-adult oriented gaming that is Manhunt. All this happening while hes screaming "You'll fucken play and love Mario you little fuckers, now hack that dikes arm off".

Super Mario Sunshine is extremely violent. The 2nd boss for instance, involves tearing all of an octopus's tentacle off with your bare hands, then if that wasnt enough YOU HAVE TO PULL HIS FUCKING FACE OFF

What about New SMB, where you fight Bowser in the first level, knock him into the lava, and his flesh melts off...? Definitely one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen in a Nintendo-developed game.

Oh yeah that was actually pretty shocking too, its quite cool to get a sudden bit of violence in a Nintendo game really
