Title: I'm sorry, but Earthbound is lame
Post by: tiesto on February 27, 2007, 02:29:05 PM
I don't get why people wank so hard over this game (especially Amisux)... having some snappy "po-mo" dialogue isn't gonna help when the gameplay and combat engine are as primitive as Dragon Warrior II's (came out 8 years earlier), and the graphics are Famicom level. Seriously, the most overrated RPG in the whole SNES library, or one of the most overrated RPGs of all time.

Agree 100%. I don't understand why it has a following at all.

It sucks.

(especially Amisux)

HEY. I created that name!

Agree 100%. I don't understand why it has a following at all.

Well, it's pretty easy to see why it has a following:

1. It's from Nintendo
2. Wannabe lit-crits on sites like SelectButton and the old InsertCredit message boards "appreciate" the game for its smarmy dialogue and attempted plays on traditional RPG cliches
3. Maybe those scratch and sniff stickers that were used in the advertisements had mind-altering chemicals embedded within them?

Most of the people who really like the game aren't really big fans of the genre, I notice.

Mario rpgs are in the same category as Earthbound. Stupid witty dialouge, usually horrible battle systems, and TERRIBLE plots that make you want to kill yourself.

Nintendo should stop attempting to make rpgs.

I enjoyed the first Mario RPG fair enough... but then again I haven't played it since its release in 1996, and then again that was made by Square during their apex. I have only played a bit of the Mario and Luigi games (like 10 minutes or so in the stores), and have only seen others play the Paper Mario titles. They all just seem a bit too gimmicky for my tastes, especially with regards to the battle system, although I can respect that at least they are attempting new gameplay mechanics, and not just selling on their goofy storylines and dialogue.

I've got a bit of hope for the Wii Super Paper Mario but I'm praying it serves up some good 2D platform gaming and isn't hindered by tons of unnecessary gimmicks and tacked-on RPG elements that needlessly complicate things.

The Fire Emblem games are pretty class though.

The battle system in mario and luigi is actually pretty nice, I'll give them that, but the dialogue and stuff makes me not even want to play it because it's so embarassing.

Haven't played Fire Emblem yet. I've been looking for the games forever but can't find em.

Anyway since Iam the sole defender of earthbound on this website (and this thread begs for my posts) I shall do just that.

Earthbound:

Reasons for liking it:
1. Humor, I was a kid when I first played this and it was amusing. Its not laugh out loud funny but amusing.
2. Music, perhaps the best SNES rpg soundtrack in a game without the words final fantasy or chrono trigger on them.
3. I have played dragon warrior/quest and I see the similarities, imo its more of a homage to mother 1 (earthbound zero, which was a NES title) with updated graphics. (the pulsating, winamp visualization like backgrounds which were awesome)

I liked the story and setting too <3

Graphics were fine to me, honestly I'm no graphics whore then or now. Games a bit short nowadays though, but still fun.

Most of the people who really like the game aren't really big fans of the genre, I notice.

1. lol worthy, no it doesnt matter. I'm not a big fan of nintendo.
2. I have never heard of these sites.
3. they smelled funky, very memorable smells. I liked how it was supposed to be a smell from something in the game, that was a fun.

I have played rpgs for a long time, over a decade at least. No I think your assumptions are very incorrect.

When the time comes I will post the english patch for mother 3 and if possible a rom for the game. It has improved upon earthbound in most every way. Good day sir. :tophat

As a 5th grader I liked the humor and setting. It appealed to my imagination at the time and my childish desires for a fantastical adventure.

In terms of gameplay it's admittedly lacking. It's Dragon Quest 2 with funky spell names.

I enjoyed it at the time because I was young and didn't know much better. I enjoy it still mostly out of nostalgia. I don't try and draw any sort of deeper metaphysical meaning from it. I don't buy into Tim Rogers' crazy ramblings about it.

If you want to talk wildly overrated SNES RPGs let us discuss Chrono Trigger.

I'm not saying bad. I'm just saying it's become wildly overrated. When I look at it with nostalgia glasses yeah it's awesome. When I look at it objectively it's another SNES era RPG with better visuals, music and production values.

The music still takes me back, I just can't stand when people put it on some untouchable pedestal.

You forgot about me Viz, I pump Earthbound hard. Fucking amazing game.

You haters can shut you fucking taco mouths becuase If you dont like Earthbound you clearly have absolutely no fucking taste. Some of the best jokes and dialogue I have ever seen.

Shit like:

"If you want it in the shorts, go right ahead!"
and "Fail proof Frank is now just 'failure' Frank"

I know heaps about videogames so what I have just said is 100% correct and not debatable.

...are you hating on the Paper Mario games? Did you just associate something that Intelligent Systems made with Earthbound?! >:(

I just read tim rogers review of mother 2 (wow was it long) and I cant say I disagree, not that I think THAT much into the game hes 100% correct.

I might say that the Paper Mario games are worse.  I'd be a good prevaricator if I said I didn't splooge for Mario & Luigi though.

When you find yourself agreeing with Tim Rogers it's a sign you should reevaluate your beliefs.

I don't love everything he does - and I can certainly see why he annoys people - but I think someone needs to do what he's doing. He's pushing games journalism to some pretty uncomfortable places, and I can only really see it being a good thing for the industry as a whole in the long run.

no, nobody needs to do what he's doing

he's not pushing games journalism to any uncomfortable places, unless by "uncomfortable places" you mean "completely self-indulgent geekery" and we already have dave halverson for that minus the word count

Yeah, I do mean self-indulgent geekery. But I still see that as a necessary evolution of games journalism. I mean, I hope he's pushing it in that direction further than anyone else ever will - I certainly don't want to see 100,000 word pieces everywhere in five years time - but I'm glad he's doing it.

It's like, say, Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz album. Not everyone likes it, but it set up a boundary, and ultimately jazz as a whole benefited from it.

You have to have played it when you were younger.  I remember being really young and thinking the game was just out there and pretty crazy fantasy, and that's what seemed so cool about it.  Trying it today would just be boring.
