ANSWER PAPANGUSES

it actually has a pretty interesting mythology for the three "races." more so than most, at least.
-
I have to rebuy it, lost disc 1. Worth rebuying tho. Amazing game.
-
I really suck at RTS's. Even the computer AI on easy kicks my ass like a Korean on a 24 hour internet cafe bender.
True Story: I bought Starcraft and logged 100 hours playing Paintball, Capture the Flag and other gimmicky maps. It was the only type of maps I could win at.
My skills maxed out at Warcraft 1 ... and never evolved.
-
I only play against AI or team games against AI. I dont have time to devote to one game, thats just silly.
-
i thought company of heroes was the best rts last year.. ???
-
people are sick of the genre
-
I played through some of the campaign but it ran crappy on my computer which has since been upgraded some. I really liked some of the things it did with the heroes and tech trees.
I couldn't get any of my RTS playing friends interested in it and when WH40k:DC came out that was pretty much the end of RoL for me. I feel like I should go back to it though.
I really liked the art.
-
Company of Heroes is OMG too, that tore me from RoL
-
people are sick of the genre
Lol, sick of the genre that currently defines the bulk of PC gaming? Go back to troll school Mon.
-
I was playing WoW hardcore when the game came out and never picked it up. I suppose I should try out one of them there demo thingies for it.
-
oops, forgot about CoH!
-

it's part of the bulk of PC gaming because some genres are only doable on PCs because of the mouse + keyboard setup
the genre is tired and each specific game demands long periods of adaptation before you can truly get a grip on the mechanics, and the amount of required micro-management can be daunting, as well as the waiting before some exciting gameplay occurs-- elements well beyond your average J6P's patience threshold -- it's not surprising that people don't exactly crave for RTSes' anymore, especially when they aren't from a notorious franchise like Command & Conquer or Warcraft

Mondain: Yet LotR sold really well on the 360 and C&C3 will also be coming to the console.
Youre a bigger distinguished mentally-challenged fellow now than ever before!
On a side note I will never play online RTS with Frag ever since CONQUEST. Those Kohan days were classic tho ;)
-
these are games from popular franchises, but can a similar success be seen with newcomers?
-
Rise of Legends, Age of Empires III both sold well. LotR sold VERY well, so much that sequels and expansion packs came out. Supreme Commander is selling very well too.
More are coming out as a result of solid sales. Dont be daft.
-
AoE3 busted the bank open. MS anticipated better sales for RoL based on RoN's massive success, but apparently the change from a real-world theme to a steampunk one drove off about 33% of the fans. The sales weren't disappointing for RoL; they were just not up expectations. RoL is apparently still getting an expansion, but news about it has been disturbingly silent.
-
eh, that's why they put Ensemble Studios at work on an Halo RTS
sole truly great game studio that MS has IMO
-
Rise of Legends will be on sale next week for $10 at Circuit City. I'll pick it up then and then probably, in a moment of horrific irony, wonder why I can't get a game with you and MAF because you're too busy playing an MMO.
-
Haha, more like too busy playing too many games period. The number of games im playing in any given week is kinda nuts.
-
Its awesome especially since i got it for free from drinky and MAF
-
Pardon the thread necromancy, I just wanted to say that this is probably one of the most intelligently designed RTS games I've ever played though, now that I'm sort of done with it (played through all three campaigns on hard, can beat the skirmish AI on hardest setting, can't really play multiplayer because there are usually less than 20 people online at any time, and no custom games and it can't match me up with anyone but super-dudes because of the low pop). This game should, at the least, be required playing for anyone making or reviewing RTS games-the core design and lovingly crafted aesthetic are pretty much flawless. The only thing that is bad about the game is the now-dead multiplayer scene.
If anyone wants a match of this, shoot me a PM or something.

AND MY AXE
-
Second game I threw back on my hard drive after a fresh install of windows. Still the best interface in an RTS ever? yes, and the pacing is as amazingly perfect as it ever was.
what a brilliant RTS. stuff liike C&C3 and Red Alert 3 are fun, but there is something about this game and a small handful of others (COH and AoE3 being two recent ones) where the progression and escalation of the combat and tech in the game ramp up in such perfect harmony.
-
I bought Rise of Legends backthen when it came out.
I don't know how many years it has been now, but i have the game right here next to me, and i've never played that shit.
-
no mac port, but I LOVE rise of nations

as a bonus, ZEKE

ZEKE DESTROYER OF WORLDS

micro
I can barely pull it off in SC, and even then it's rather pedestrian.
-
You don't need micro to enjoy Rise of Legends casually in skirmish, single-player, or against "normal" people in MP outside of some trample micro. You can generally just set buildings to auto-build to your hero and then move around in a big clump with MAYBE a control group for your siege.
It's nothing like the micro required in Age of Empires or Blizzard games.
-
out of touch with rts games
-
I still say Rise of Nations is the better game but I'll try this again just to see.
-
age of empires 3
-
Age of Empires 3 is terrific game, but if you want to come back to the RTS genre after a long break nothing's more refreshing than Company of Heroes IMO.
-
i'd agree, but i think coh's skirmish ai is pretty damn hard for genre nubs. aoe3's easy is FUCK easy. hell, its HARD is fuck easy.
-
Check out Company of Heroes. If you REALLY want to go for something simplistic then check out World in Conflict. No base building, just unit spam. I'm sure there's some strategy involved somewhere but my game tactics use none.
-
is aoe not on steam? looks like coh is so it wins by default. I'll give it a go and hopefully it gets me back into the genre :)
Play against me sometime. I suck.
-
I didn't pass on it. I've had it since it came out and absolutely love it, especially those epic battle when the sweeping symphonic score kicks in. Great stuff.
Haven't played it recently though.

Same story with me. I chose option 1.
