Title: Director of Saw 2, 3 and 4 to remake SCANNERS, David Goyer to write

"Saw" Maker to Tackle "Scanners" Remake

Posted by Scott Weinberg on Thursday, Mar. 01, 2007, 01:29 AM

Scott Weinberg writes: "Darren Lynn Bousman, director of "Saw 2," "Saw 3," and the upcoming "Saw 4," will soon be helming a remake of David Cronenberg's "Scanners" for Dimension Films. They also signed a pretty good screenwriter for the gig...

...and that writer is David S. Goyer, whose flicks include "Dark City," "Blade," "Blade 2," and "Batman Begins."

----------------------

They also conveniently left out that David Goyer is the writer/director of Blade: Trinity, ZigZag, Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Puppet Masters.  He has like one good script to one bad script.  Totally a hit or miss guy.  And I've got no faith in Bousman.  Those Saw movies are as about as bland as you can get.

Mmmph, we're going to have to wait for TVC to come back online to hear his outrage. :-\

Another remake I'll be sure not to catch in theaters.

You wouldn't like it; it requires a degree of taste.

Honestly, Scanners isn't one of Cronenberg's best movies.  Aside from the notorious scene and one other bit, it's actually a fairly wasted concept.  It's kind of boring.  I just don't think he had the budget powers to do what he wanted.

The success of Scanners did allow Videodrome, a true masterpiece to be made, though.

And hey, it's got a good screenwriter attached.  All the movies named have a certain "darkness" to them, so I have a feeling the dark almost-future of Scanners will be portrayed well.

The director. . . I don't think direction was a problem on the last 2 Saw movies.  Saw 2 I liked, Saw 3, well, the series fell into the trap of making the villain the star.  I'm assuming this is going to be a somewhat low budget affair?

Besides, a remake certainly can't be worse than the Scanners sequels.  If it were, say, the director of Saw 1 I might be concerned.

I've hated the style of the last two Saws. True, the original did imploy alot of quick cutting and such, but not every scene was made to look like a Nine Inch Nails music video -- something DLB doesn't seem to understand.

Either you like Goyer or you want me to gum dvd's, I'm not sure which one is worse.

Also Goyer highly insisted on his direction of Blade 2 and 3, take that as you will.

Blame your Jesus David Fincher for making that style chic.  It really doesn't bug me that much unless it's done poorly.

Jesus? I like Fincher, but he's hardly my "jesus" -- and I'd be much quicker to blame modern video directors and Tony Scott than Fincher.

As a lesser Cronenberg film, this isn't like butchering a classic.  And I also feel like there might be some love behind this given that Scanners is reasonably obscure and the people brought in are seemingly capable of recreating and maybe improving on the original idea.  I agree with TVC -- it was a wasted concept.

Isn't Bousman already attached to the next Saw and his own horror/musical project? Jeez, talk about getting ahed of yourself.

Just like Willco always says, if you can get movies done fast, there will always be work for you.  Especially if, like Bousman, your shaz does well at the box office.

Yeah, if you can turn a film in under time and/or under budget, you will always find work in Hollywood no matter what.

I think Scanners is a film that would do well with a remake - but I'm not sure if I'd take Bousman and Goyer to tackle the material.

It's not like Scanners is a very difficult or deep movie or anything.

What's the point of trying to remake a good concept if you just churn out another mediocre film?

There's a good writer on it and a director that I don't think is necessarily bad.  As has been pointed out, I think a Scanners remake is the sort of project that would only be touched by people that give a fuck about the movie, too.

The Wicker Man looks awesome, actually. Nick Cage punching women in a bear costume ftw.

Ergh, good point.

I think Scanners might be the only available Cronenberg movie to remake.  The Fly aside, it's the only one that has had sequels.  Maybe someone wanted to redo a Cronenberg movie and this was the only thing available that wasn't from his cheesy 70s movies.

It was solely aimed at TVC.  I thought his love for Cronenberg might override rationality. :-\

Goyer didn't do The Dark Knight's script, right?  I was underthe impression that brother Nolan was doing it under the instruction of Goyer and Chris.

I'm sure if Videodrome were available to be remade, it would've been by now.

Videodrome isn't a Hollywood movie. Up until History of Violence, The Fly was the only non-corporate movie Cronenberg made.  For Scanners, he probably signed some shady agreement for funding.  Videodrome is his baby, though.  He controls that.
