Title: Unprofessional, yay/nay?
Post by: bluemax on March 01, 2007, 06:23:17 PM: My supervisor uses Pls. instead of please in emails. Is it wrong that I find this extremely unprofessional and rather annoying? The woman constructs sentences at a second grade level as well.

Anyways, I understand this frustration. I have a manager that constantly sends out emails like this

all in bold and caps...

Because she's been working for this department for 20 years. So while she's technically incompetent, lacking in education (no HS diploma or GED) she gets to be MIS director for the Student Affairs division of a large private university.

Her stupidity and promotion chased my former supervisor off.

Don't ever work for a University long term. Thank goodness I graduate and leave this year.

Valery was quite pleased with your assistance this morning. She said her presentation was a success, thanks to you.

Some of these aren't as bad as others, but her usage of commas and ellipses is at times baffling. We often reread her emails aloud to try and parse them better. She's a native English speaker too.

For example, a lot of higher-ups in my company send out a ridiculous number emails a day and simply don't have the time to spellcheck the gibberish they're sending to subordinates. It really isn't that important. I'm reluctant to believe that anyone would send an obnoxiously unprofessional email like that if it really mattered and they knew better.

We also have a guy who sends out company-wide emails ALL the time in caps. I put an Outlook filter on to auto-delete anything he sends. I can't read that bullshit if I try.

She left a note once about how too much bread was being baked at once and it was getting stale. The note started off like this:

Please bake in small amounts at a time of bread.

I mean its not like he's mentioned his company, so there's no strict representation, but on the issue of professionalism, this isnt that professional either. In fact I think its LESS professional than saying 'pls' in an e-mail.

I do worry about this woman's ability to communicate for a number of reasons. For one she often communicates things to me in the most roundabout bizarre manner leaving me utterly baffled as to what it is I'm supposed to accomplish. Since we're a tech support department this can be really bad at times. Also since she became my supervisor I frequently show up to departments with problem descriptions from her that when I repeat them to the people in the department they make me look bad because they're so awkward or completely wrong. Thankfully most people here recognize that I know what I'm doing and that this woman is too incompetent for her position and title.

Anywho, I'll try to refrain from posting on a semi public messageboard about my incompetent boss in the future.
