Title: Getting a new MP3 player.
Post by: omg_lemurs on March 02, 2007, 12:53:52 AM
Do I get a new iAudio X5... or do I get a Cowon D2.

My X5 done broke. I put it in and out of my pocket in my jeans a lot and there's a large 1/8 plug on my headphones and it fucked up my MP3 player. The X5 is pretty much the greatest MP3 player ever... it served me well. I want to get a new one.

BUT I also want to try my hand at a flash based MP3 player. I was never interested before until I saw this:

http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/cowon/d2/

It is another Cowon player yes. But I've never been interested in any of their other flash based MP3 players either. The thing that caught my eye about this one is the battery life (52 hours for music), touch screen UI, high quality video playback, SD card slot, 4gb, uber functionality.

It's a do everything player like the X5 and that's what I love. I need something that lets me fiddle around and tweak various aspects of the playback and this player offers that. But... it's a flash based player and I  like having a player that can carry all my music. However the fact that this has an SD card slot which not a whole lot of players these days have... makes things much more interesting. I could certainly spend a shit load of money and buy multiple 4 GB SD cards but... that's expensive.

If only the X5 had such a nice screen and 52 hours of playback. :[

I have my mind settled on one of these two players but if there's something else out there as functional I'd love to know about it.

I've been looking at the Cowon D2 for the past two weeks now. I'm about to make my purchase but I'm still trying to get a few things cleared up before I take the plunge. I don't have a ton of music files so I'm not too worried about the limited storage of a flash player. Right now I use my phone as my portable music player but the video functions of my phone are lacking and having a dedicated PMP would be nice since I no longer have my iPod. The only thing I'm unclear about right now is what resolution the video has to be for playback. All my videos are in MP4 format at iPod video resolution and I don't want to have to re-encode all my videos if I can avoid it.

It would have been easy to get the iPod Nano but it doesn't have video playback (might as well stick with my phone in that case), not to mention that the ability to add additional storage to the D2, among other nice features, puts it several notches above the Nano and other flash players. Also the fact that the D2 doesn't look like shit is a huge plus for me. I'm very style concious when it comes to these things and I wouldn't buy something if it didn't at least look good.

You can get them on eBay for around $200.

Okay, being poor is one thing... but have you checked out Apple's refurbished store? Hella good discounts on iPods.

People who dismiss the iPod out of spite though, that's ridiculous. Assert your individuality via your DAP!

A Cowon doesn't cost as much as an iPod. In fact, I'm pretty sure that iPods are the most expensive DAPs around - another reason why certain people don't like them.

just give it up and get an iPod like the rest of the civilized world you silly thing

1. I don't want a player that fucking imprints onto one computer so I can't use it on any other PC.
2. I'm not paying apple $30 for an accessory (wall plug adapter) that should come packed in with the player.
3. I'm not using a fucking player that I need proprietary software in order to use. Shitty proprietary software that automatically syncs shit that hey... maybe I don't want to have synced?
4. I don't want to download shitty 3rd party software as a replacement for the shitty iTunes software.
5. Did I miss anything? Oh yeah... limited codec support, shitty battery life, overpriced accessories.
6. I don't want a fucking player that won't let me drag and drop music from my player back onto my PC or any other PC.
7. Fuck iPod.

The only thing that ever tempted me was the 80 GB. But since it's such a hassle and you can't use it as a plug and go mass storage device... and it imprints onto one computer fuck it. There's no point.

They are. Check out Cowons' website or look on www.jetmall.com

I might want to get the CLIX2 8GB when it comes out in the states. I don't know how long that's going to be though. I'm waiting for Cowon to release their follow up to the X5 already but it doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon.

Shit I'm still waiting for a followup to the iRiver H300. :/ All these companies seem to be focused on releasing smaller flash based devices rather than DAPs with massive HDD storage.

I wouldn't hate the iPod if it wasn't a piece of shit. I like Apple's overpriced computer hardware but to see all the faults in the iPod and pretend they don't exist is a load of horse shit. The UI isn't all that important to me, I couldn't give a shit about a click wheel, and iTunes is a piece of shit. These two selling points I'm indifferent to along with all the stuff I listed does not make for a good purchase in my eyes. I don't care about conformity or non-conformity, I care not to spend $250-350 on a smelly turd of a player when there's so much else out there.

I love how Apple sheep sit with such smugness and self satisfaction. It's as though they relish every moment and every thrust of Apples hard cock as it ravages their wallets and assholes. Apple makes some decent hardware. When it comes to audio and video editing their shit is second to none. To not see a little humor or shittyness in the fact that there's a new MAC OS every 6 fucking month is absurd, and to not mind the restrictiveness of the iPod is just low standards.

Great, you managed to call it a piece of shit repeatedly without any more of an argument other than... it's a piece of shit.

In the meantime, you're replacing the cheap Korean DAP you speak so highly of, while I'm rocking my 5G iPod with no difficulties - other than the fact that it's scratched as fuck.

Maybe you missed the post where I gave... I think 7 reasons why I didn't want an iPod and ordered them numerically. I made the thread saying I didn't want an iPod and people come in and say iPod. I don't need those shenanigans. People here think they're being funny and ironic but really it's just obnoxious. Seriously, shut the fuck up.

Go back and read my post again you ADD illiterate douchebag. I had your number the minute I read any of your posts. When you were in school did you switch classes or did you have all your subjects in the same classroom? How big was your bus? Did you call your teacher by his or her first name?

Bullshit. 30 hours? 20 hours is the maximum the company itself advertises and trust me, they aren't going to advertise the low end. Those tests are performed under the most insane perfect conditions ever. You'd have to try very hard to get what the Apple claims is the battery life, and there's nothing you could do to get a 10 hour improvement. If you could Apple would say 30 hours instead of twenty.

Why would you want to? Because iTunes is a bloated piece of resource hogging shit? Who cares? Maybe so you can move your library of music from one computer to another? I just know that I did this kind of stuff a lot with my X5. Putting assignments and whatnot onto my X5 and hooking it up to a computer at school to work on and vice versa. You can tell plenty of difference between the audio formats you stupid git, if you use headphones that aren't the crappy ones packed in with the player. Which cost $30 on the aftermarket BTW if I recall correctly.

Clearly our tastes differ simply because you have lower standards. You don't care about features that I care about and don't mind the extremely limited nature of the iPod. That's fine you get what you like, just get the fuck off my thread with that shit. I said I don't want an iPod and you're not going to convince me otherwise.

i spend about 4 hours a day at work listening to my nano. it goes well over a week -- and sometimes up to two -- before i hafta charge it. plus JESUS FUCK you're an invalid just plug the fucker into yer USB port and charge it while you listen. sorry my real world estimate conflicted with your gaf-esque list of anti-ipod talking points. fortunately, i'm never 8 hours away from a computer or a space of time where i can charge it.

second, buy a decent PC or a Mac. don't be a useless poor. sorry that the 4-5% resources used by iTunes on yer 700 mHz P3 eats into the software rendering needed by Counterstrike; maybe yer dad shoulda dummied up another kid on the welfare application and bought an eMachines box with an actual GPU.

third, you can DL yer iTunes music library on up to 5 machines OH TEH NO ONLY 5. i have my library on my work machine, my Mac, my main PC, and my laptop. syncing up is a menu item away. you suck at iTunes.

fourth, i have $200 sony xbr studio monitors. you listen to the fucking beatles, which even a high khz sample rate can't make into quality. ogg is for open source foolios, like the gaf mods. are you like the gaf mods? no, you're less than the gaf mods, because you aren't even good at codec geekery.

Has anyone ever told you that you're really funny? Because I have big lips right? What else? My eyes are far apart?

Sorry I'm just trying to get the joke you just made. It went over my head at first but I think I get it now. You're comparing me to a fish because of my physical appearance. Is that correct? I usually pride myself in my ability to get a joke but this really confused me at first. I guess that's usually the trend with new and groundbreaking comedy. Have you ever heard of Lenny Bruce? You should check him out. His unique form of observational humor that I find similar to yours. If you want to check him out I'd suggest starting with The Law, Language, and Lenny Bruce and The Lenny Bruce Originals Vol. 2.

Another similarity between him and you is that people really didn't "get" him in his time. He got banned from performing at a lot of night clubs and blacklisted in a few cities. He was arrested a few times for obscenity and some think this led to his eventual death from a heroin overdose. He wasn't able to practice his craft because the general public hadn't caught up yet. Turns out he was one of the most influential humorists/comedians whose ever lived. They made a movie about his life called Lenny starring Dustin Hoffman. I'd check that out too if I were you. There's a valuable lesson to be learned from his life. Even though people might not get you at first... stick it out and time will tell. If that joke is any indication you're a really funny guy. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

Good luck man.

Shit.

How do you never use a question mark, period, or capitalize the first letter of any of your sentences? Critiquing someones spelling (especially when you have questionable spelling and grammar yourself) is usually a last ditch effort to strike back when you don't have an argument.

You're starting the flame wars but when I call you on your bullshit you want to move on. I don't want an iPod. Don't like it? Don't bother continuing to suggest it or at least try to sell me on the idea rather than insult me for my preference. I really hope folks can see you're the one being the douche bag here. Title: Re: Getting a new MP3 player.
Post by: Van Cruncheon on March 03, 2007, 01:15:10 AM
why shouldn't you? it's well-designed, well-supported, and well-manufactured. its only downside for some folks -- and i'll leave the moral assessment to the readers -- is that pirating mp3s, while not prevented, isn't actively encouraged by the platform. an mp3 player is an mp3 player, and its primary function is primarily served by reliability and convenience, which is exactly what the ipod continues to do best.

And if I find iTunes and the inability to drag and drop files onto and OFF of the player inconvenient? Maybe I'm looking for something that does more than just play MP3s?

Title: Re: Getting a new MP3 player.
Post by: Van Cruncheon on March 03, 2007, 01:48:37 AM
last i checked, an "mp3 player" wasn't trying to be a thumb drive or a home recording studio -- and the ones that do are usually korean-made suck. buy an mp3 player for mp3 playback. buy a thumb drive for file transfer. buy a mac for home studio work.

iRiver and a Zen. Both had cumbersome, buggy software and kludgy interfaces. Ironically, I have no experience with a Zune.

You can set up a portion of your iPod to use as a portable HDD that can store any kind of data JUST SAYIN NOT SPRAYIN

It doesn't do you much good if you can't easily drag and drop it back onto any desktop without software.

I don't like Zen, but what model iRiver did you have?

I'll also go on record as saying that I prefer the file tree system.

You can drag and drop data from the data HDD partition you set up just fine. You just can't drag and drop MP3s from the music partition. Which makes sense.

All I want out of a mp3 player is something I can put songs onto and then listen to them on. iPods do that so I use one.

Nothing else matters, nor should anything else fucking matter to anyone else for that matter.

Hey, you stupid fuck. I'm the one who started the thread saying I didn't want an iPod. I posted the two MP3 players that I was looking into and twats come into my thread and tell me to get an iPod. I said I didn't want one. I was looking for a "get the D2 or X5 or (other player besides iPod)".

Who's looking for an argument when they purposefully come into my topic and troll my shit. I said I didn't want a fucking iPod so why keep suggesting it to me? Fucking asshole.

I expect my mp3 player to use drag and drop not have to install itunes on any computer I grab music from. Ipods are overpriced and some of the flash based ones dont even come with a fucking screen. I can get a better player with more features for less and not have drm bullshit. Ipods therfore are overrated.

Lemurs and Viz seem to have some pretty valid complaints.  Things that have bothered me as an iPod owner.  Why do you care if they do research to get a product that suits their needs?

You guys are being pretty obnoxious, "Buy an iPod," "Why do you care?," "Don't be poor."

Not to mention the fact that the iAudio X5 when it first came out was nearly $400 because of how technologically superior it was/is. Being poor? Bullshit. People who like the players I like are the kinds of people who liked minidisk recorders.

iPod doesn't come with a built in radio when it could be easily done, but the attachment costs something like $30-50.

35 hour long battery.
Built in FM tuner.
Build in video.
Microphone Recording
Line In Recording
Alarm (Set a time, player turns on automatically and records selection of line in or radio. People use this to do things like record radio shows like Howard Stern on Sirius. It's very useful.)
USB On the Go
5 Band EQ and various enhancement settings. Considered to be at or near the top of the food chain when it comes to sound quality.
Picture Viewer and Text Viewer (Useless to me)
MP3, OGG, WMA, WAV files, and FLAC
USB Storage
M3U (I like this. If you organize your shit you should be fine.)
Bookmarking (Rather than fast forward through a 5 hour long recorded radio show to get to the point where you left off you book mark it and listen later from whatever point)
Windows, Mac, and Linux. I don't know if iPod is Linux compatible

The player was released several months before the iPod Video. I'd say the player was well ahead of it's time and no other HDD DAP (besides various PMPs) have matched it in terms of features.
