I'm trying to get some people together on GAF to go see it. Is anyone else taking friends on day one or something?

I feel like I might need to be hopped up on PCP to fully appreciate this, but the ticket was free so if I hallucinate through it, no big deal.

No, I'm pretty sure all you need is a set of balls. ;)

Puh-lease.  Balls are necessary for sitting through stuff like Tetsuo II.  300 requires some additional temporal enhancement.

Cheesey dialouge + overly used cgi = MEH

This film has the same faults as the star wars prequels without the nostalgia or the john williams score.

Yeah, BUT it has the badass, and the actually ATTRACTIVE CG. Oh, and it doesn't look cheap as shit.

It doesn't help that I can name the amount of sword & sandal epics I didn't find boring on one hand. One mutilated hand with 3 missing fingers.

And Alba isn't in it. Where did you get that idea?

I loved Sin City, and Im positive I will not like this. Worst looking cheesefest in ages. Why does bad acting and sweaty half-nude men screaming get people excited?

Anyways, as Ive said several times, I am going to let the tomatometer guide me for once. >80%, I will see it.

Agreed.

"THIS IS SPARTAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

"TONIGHT.... WE DINE.... IN HELLLLLLLLLLLLLL"

Sounds like shitty dialogue to me. Plus, I hate the hue they went with in this movie. Not to mention that NO ONE besides Frank Miller (and he isn't even directing like he did in Sin City) is involved with this film that was involved with Sin City. I don't see any of the hype, and it just looks like another movie gay porn will find a way to spoof quite easily.

175 isn't skinny, thats healthy normal weight for your height.

Your Body Mass Index

The Height you entered is 6 feet, 3 inches. The Weight you entered is 175 pounds.
Your Calculated BMI is: 21.9
    *  Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
    * Overweight = 25-29.9
    * Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

I'm trying to get more defined as well.  I'm nowhere near overweight but I've got a tummy that has no definition.  Gotta hop on that eliptical tonight and get gangsta with it.  Then do situps on my wife's workout ball thing.

Edit: Oh yeah, probably seeing 300 with my dad on the 17th.  For shizzles.

I just got back from my preview screening, and this is the most gay Hollywood movie I've seen in a long time.  It's essentially one huge conflict between butch gays and effeminate gays, with splotches of really lurid heterosexuality thrown in to keep the guys in the audience from giving each other handjobs as blood spatters fill the screen.

That said, it's all pretty cool.  Not really a critic's movie -- there's not a lot of long-winded speeches, there's no 45 minutes of boring-ass downtime like in Gladiator, and there is lots and lots of brutal killing.  The director is great, and this movie is the perfect remedy for people sick of the new Hollywood notion that you can't have a fight scene that contains less than 100 edits.  There are lots of well choreographed long-takes of fighting, and you're never confused about who is doing what to whom.  Not everyone will like the MTV-styled slo-mo, but I certainly do.

The CG blood-spattering is pretty nice, and really makes it feel like a comic book.  Definitely better than the gratuitous real-life spattering of Kill Bill, since I don't think it induces as much laughter and doesn't feel as slapsticky.

God, this sounds so fuckin awesome. :hyper

Hey Shake can you help me out? One of my friends wants to go see the movie with me (thank god) but he might not get off work until 10:30pm. So we won't go to the IMAX one most likely. Anyway my Showcase Cinemas lists the movie with special notes near them, and I don't know what they mean:

300 [DLP-Digital Projection ]

and

300 [RWC ]

I'm pretty sure RWC has to do with hearing (something that caters to people with hearing problems I think), but what is DLP? There's also a listing for 300 that doesn't feature these two notes, but the times aren't as good

Digital means its projected in digital, not on film... i.e., in much better quality than "normal" projections offer. I'd definitely go with that -- watching Sin City on a non-DLP screen gave the film a coat of wear-and-tear that kinda ruined the whole look of the thing. I suspect this may suffer the same way. :-\

And I am probably seeing this movie this weekend. I always end up seeing sword and sandle movies but every damn one since Gladiator has been pretty bad. Gladiator could have revived this genre but instead we got Alexander and Troy.  >:(

Alexander Revisited isn't supposed to "fix" the film.  From Stone's mouth, it's merely giving more content to the halfwits that did like Alexander.

Oh yeah, and you forgot Stone's best movie: SALVADOR

Sin City was well received, and critics creamed over Batman Begins and Spider-Man 2. So why cant I hold out for a "cream of the crop" movie? There have been comic book flicks that have attained that status. Hell, I remember back in 2004 when Spidey 2 had just come out, and it was the highest rated movie of the year at RT.

Verbal exposition is shit, I agree, but wtf at flashbacks being bad.  Once Upon A Time in the West, A Fistful of Dynamite/Giu la Testa, and Once Upon A Time in America ALL relied on flashbacks.  That's pretty much half of Sergio Leone's filmography right there!

Well, there's a shitty way to do everything...but flashbacks can be done well.  I've also heard that narrator's are a bad screenwriter's crutch (lol, Adaptation) but I've seen a ton of great movies that featured narration in some form or another (High Fidelity and About a Boy, for example).
Title: Re: Official 300 thread

Yes, but I assumed we weren't talking about greats like Leone, Ichirou, but about your average Joe modern day Hollywood director.

Also, narration is considered by many to be a crutch/sloppy writing, but like Leone and flashbacks, there are exceptions. You need look no further than Martin Scorsese.

Flashbacks really haven't been too much of a problem in recent years, because all the hacks have it written in their brain from taking film school post-'90s that they can't do it.  It's not as heavily used as it once was.  And voice over narration is making a comeback, but that was dead for most of the '90s through the new millennium.

Good man. All I will say again is to keep in mind that its very much the opposite of Se7en. Instead of being wrapped up in the murders/the killer, its more an ode to the cops and reporters of that era, their repeated failures in that abortion of an investigation, and the obsession that drove most of them. Thats why really clicked for me. Se7en is a fantastic film, and as almost its anti-thesis, Zodiac is also a fantastic, if slightly inferior film.

It's also easily the most restrained/least flashy/gimmicky of all Fincher's films.

Just got back from the movie. HOLY SHIT

I intended on going to the 10:15 showing, and got there around 9:35. Once I drove past the window I could see a massive amount of people in line. At first I thought they were there to see something else, but rather quickly it became clear that the majority of the crowd was there for 300. The 10:15 showing was sold out, so I had to go to the 10:45. The crowd was huge, and luckily I was first in line to pick the best seat (middle seat in the middle row=you see everything). People laughed at the funny lines and actually cheered during some scenes (like the one where the queen shows her Spartan side, with a sword). On a funny note...there was this guy sniffing throughout some of the movie. It was mainly audable during the more quiet, emotional parts of the movie. Because of this it sounded like he was crying or something. So out of nowhere this dude right behind me yells out.

Dude: NO CRYING ALLOWED IN SPARTA
Sniffling Guy: I have a cold mother****er
Dude: THIS IS MADNESS
 :rofl

I felt the movie was amazing. I went in expecting an extremely gratuitous, over the top epic and that's what I got. What I was most surpised at was that the acting and dialogue wasn't nearly as cheesy as I expected. Like many fantasty epics, the movie is full of various speeches, and all of them are great.

But I didn't go to the movie for speeches, I went for the AWESOME-ness. The action was simply amazing. I loved the slow motion mechanics used throughout the movie. All of the battles are not slow motion, though: there is a nice mix between some more shaky cam sequences and some slow motion sequences; clearly the slow motion sequences are featured more. The battle with the Immortals (and that giant thing) was truly the highlight of the action for me. Perfectly executed

I never read the graphic novel so I don't know how truthful it was to the source material, but I found it to be rather truthful to various facets of history. The way the Spartans fought was pretty damn accurate, and seeing it brought to life was quite impressive.

Overall I found the movie to be just what I was looking for: a BADASS kick in the balls. The action was tight, the story was badass, and the music was very good. Perhaps my only complaints outside of the dramatic acting (which I anticipated) was the lack of character development. I love watching epics like Jason and the Argonauts or Clash of the Titans, and these movies usually introduce a cast of characters who you can't help but root for and hope they survive. While this was done with a couple characters to a certain degree, I would have liked to see more.

6/10. Very good action, but that is all that is good about it. It's a very long action sequence and nothing more.  The story is very forgetable. If all I wanted was lots of fun action I would give it a much higher score, but I am not 16 so pretty fights aren't enough. I was expecting a very bad movie, 3-4/10 so take the 6 as you will.

The voice over was rather bad. but it didn't ruin the movie. IMO the dialogue in it was pretty good, but the narrator's voice seemed out of place. I couldn't help watch the movie and wish for some kind of classiclly trained British actor to do it. Just watch the trailer; you'll hear the guy's voice ("Spartans, the world's greatest soldiers. Taught never to retreat...")

Dude, that voice in the trailer sounded just like Gerard Butler's, except he wasn't yelling.  And it's not awful at all.

This movie is going to make a bazillion dollars.  I tried hard to see it last night, but every single showing was sold out.  Every single one.  I even checked right before we left for the late, after midnight showing and when we arrived - it was sold out!

Going to have to get tickets early today, but I'd have to say those $30 million opening weekend estimates are way off.  I haven't seen showings sold out like this since Pirates of the Carribean.  I don't think it'll crack $80 million, but it might do like $50 million or something close to Ghost Rider numbers.  Which is pretty incredible considering its an R-rated movie at the beginning of March.  Not really prime time box office factors.

It wasn't Gerard Butler. Remember the friar in Van Helsing? It's him lolz

Get used to that around the bay area dude. Its like that for most all new releases. Higher percentage of people per theater than most anywhere in california.

And yeah its gonna do fantastic numbers this weekend. My theater was packed all day yesterday while i worked the projector.

I enjoyed it for what I was expecting.  Definitely going to buy this on DVD.  Some of the best fucking fight scenes in movie history (but there did need to be more).  Coulda been longer, actually.  Faramir was cool.  Also, best lighting evarrr.

Simple and boring story, but I don't care.  Homo-erotic spartans are awesome.

Word on the street is that this features one of the worst voiceovers ever. Anyone care to confirm/dispute this?

Shake: Dude you sounded HAMMERED :lol

I forgot to see it again today too, but that's cuz I was working. Blocks away from a huge IMAX too... :-\

Damn, what the fuck. Word of mouth on this one isn't all too great. My friends saw it yesterday and said it was overall pretty "meh", with most of the "good parts" spoiled in the trailers and all. Now another review was posted on DVDTalk opposing the previous "good" rating...http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=26910 (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=26910)

I'm so torn atm. :(

Shut the fuck up and just watch the movie. Take it for what it is. Its a styleized graphic novel turned into a styleized action movie. And the translation between the two is beautiful. Just like in sin city.

Toga's are fine, they made some of the ticket ushers wear Sparta gear. And the female food stand girls these nice toga dresses. But thats cause of contractual obligations with movie company.

I thought it was pretty good at face value.  It's a dumb, hedonistic action flick with more slowmo than you can shake a pole arm at.

I also love one shot fight scenes, and this film has two fairly lengthy ones that were pretty fuck awesome.  I don't think fight scenes should be shot any other way.

i saw it thursday. it was dumb testosterone-jacked fun, and i accept that it's impossible to avoid a glorification of eugenics and fascism in a movie about socially-selected uberwhities killin' the fuck out of a polyglot horde. BEST ELEPHANT KILLING SCENE EVER.

I saw it today.  Its was fucking awesome.

Keyword: Flask

What is a flask: A flask is a stanless steel container you put booze in. (usually scotch, bourbon,etc..)
Why do you want to take a flask to the movie theater: Cause you can buy a nice coke and mix some in and enjoy your movie more.

Thats my lesson for Father Mike today.

The movie is still bringing in people.

It was a little too homo-erotic for my taste. I didn't mind that they didn't care about historical accuracy though, since they weren't making any pretenses of doing such.

Also
Athenians > Spartans

It wasn't homo-erotic enough for my taste. I didn't mind that they didn't care about historical accuracy though, since they weren't making any pretenses of doing such.

naha, Peloponnesian War clearly showed Sparta > Athens.

edit:  fixed.   :P
