He was a producer during the 90's I think and he says how back then he could simply choose what he was a fan of and play it and now there's two 47 year olds and a computer guy deciding everything so BET doesn't actually play what people call in to play.  The whole culture was dumbed down to reach a wider audience.

That culture can be dumbed down even more?

Brilliant :lol

It's clear from listening to him that he's a hip hop fan. His taste may not be amazing, but he worked to play everything. Now you can't even see a good video on BET. It's dominated by southern bullshit, and the only east coast stuff they play is shit coming from either the G-Unit or Dipset crew.

Even TRL listens to people in terms of the voting. I remember when Slipknot told all their fans to request one of their videos for a week, and it shot to number one; it was hilarious watching the hosts and teeny bopper/gangsta posers in the crowd look confused :lol

I want to see more real hip hop on the station. When I do watch BET (which is rare) I watch Rap City. It's more varied than 106&Park, but it's still repetitive and dominated by 10-12 of the exact same videos.

Kweli's new video is pretty badass, but it gets almost no support on BET

Um...

Back in the 90's, BET played music from all over. They didn't care if it was underground or mainstream. Also, back in the 90's, BET had a lot of self respect and did a lot for the average black american. They had tv shows where they just sat around discussing issues that teens dealt with and stuff like that, and it was great to watch. They had many shows that debated current black culture and trends. It wasn't until the Viacom buy out that BET became dumbed down and became a caricature of it's former self.

There's a "BET" lounge at the alumni building at my college.

The best day ever was when they blocked it.

Now they watch MTV, but even that's better than BET.
