I'd have to say a lot worse for a lot of reasons.  Many reasons.

Edit:  I meant old games are a lot worse.  Much worse.  Every idea is either used correctly or improved in current games.  they are, I'm not kidding.

They're worse. There's not a single game of this gen in my top 10 games of all time.

Games are loads better. All of the 8-bit era and most of the 16-bit era is unplayable shite for me.

Yeah, different standars back then. We were young(er) and had to cope with it.

The newer generation gamers barf when they see below 32-bit games.

Well I think some of the 16bit and 2d 32bit era were at a point of refinement for games, outside of graphics.  People were pleased with the graphical level of spirtes at the time, and effort seemed to go into tweaking the game system, gameplay and other factors.

We haven't gotten to that point in 3d graphics, we keep raising the bar graphically, so it's hard to compare anything from now to a game like Super Metroid.  Games of today don't seem to master the level fesign, sense of progression and overall game feel of something like SM. Not that the games suck today, they just aren't being refined.

there's plenty of good gameplay take part in even during the quest for the best 3D visuals. Its just a matter of a gamer knowing what they want.

We aren't 'along for the ride' our gaming experiences shouldnt be dictated by allegiances or keeping up with the jones'. You play what you like, the gaming industry is a wide world of variety, those that deny that simple truth are too lazy or cheap to take part in the HOBBY. If you LIKE the hobby you will make the efforts to find what you like instead of creating imaginary boundries to blame your dissastisfaction on.

Disagreed completely. 32 bit era didn't raise any bar in terms of gameplay, but once the dreamcast hit we started getting great gameplay 3d games.

It's like, what type of 3d games do you play? Nintendo games?

Oh I know theres good gameplay out there, and theres plnety of games that I like. I just remember that something like SM had nothing that bugged me about it.  There's still something overlooked in every game today that bugs me. Even being a Metroid loverboy, Prime needed tweaks and more speed, and Resident Evil 4 could of used some more overall quickness.  I still love the games, it's just when you look back or replay old games you see them as more polished.

And I have yet to really like a ND game so I don't know about Daxter.

I lot of people create imaginary gaming obstacles and 'standards' to define themselves. I mean imagine being someone online who's only real knowledge is games, but you mingle with hundreds others like you. Well you gotta stand out. So all of a sudden 'you only like 8 bit games' its so wrong it must be right!

Or maybe only Final Fantasy games are the true role playing game, you could spout that, get an FF avatar, post exciting pics of FF games. Wow! they're suddenly a personality, someone to come to for info on 8 bit gaming or FINAL FANTASY WOO.

The truth is if I want to talk to someone about gaming, I want to talk to someone who doesnt feel they know a lot about the subject, but only know that they have fun with what they play.

You can't create a 'good era' from something as subjective as 'good games' and the idea that people even bother is fucking hilarious and proves that even they can get tired of arguing sales figures.

Play some freaking games or get out of the pool.

Etoilet: Old games are more polished because there's less going on. Its easy to polish a bullet being shot at an alien and the space around it. Imagine trying to polish complex environments, its not easy, and I dont know how they even come close, and neither do you. Accept what they have accomplished or dont. The point of gaming isnt to stand back and admire it like a Monet, its a freaking videogame.

I think he means that current games have flaws you just don't want.  If you can't find more fun in say TMNT on SNES then BF2:MC then you're not right.

The games are better overall now, but I'm just not into videogames that much anymore. It's not the games, it's me.
what genre's do you play?

I play, used to play, everything but RPG's and MMORPG's.
Destroy any morsel of gaming slut in you and become good at non-scripted games.  I would recommend PGR3 or any other sim racer but maybe something like multiplayer fps's would be good for you to try to master.

If I never played a 8bit or 16bit game again I would die a happy man.  If I had to relive those days I'd just give up gaming.
