I already saw that in a gay theatre in a gay town (Chelsea!) with my gay uncle.  It doesn't get much gayer than that.

No, I pretty much called it the most overrated piece of tripe of all-time and was HATED by the gay community of NeoGAF for it.

Seen Near Dark and Man With the Screaming Brain, but not the rest, Error.  Are they on DVD?

Brokeback Mountain was one of the biggest wastes of time in my life.  The only reason it got an Oscar was because it had two dudes fucking each other in a fashion that was not comedic or formulaic, so middle America patted themselves on the back for their tolerance.

I think I found a winner

Phat Girlz(Buy Widescreen) Plus-sized comedienne Mo'nique plays a plus-sized fashion designer who goes on a tropical vacation with her sexy friends and upstages them all when she finds a man who appreciates a lot of woman.

Some foreign movies, but they're pretty interesting (I think anyway)  :P:

Zazie Dans le Metro (French) 1960
This merry farce depicts a satirical view of the French society: Twelve years old Zazie has to stay two days with her relatives in Paris, so that her mother can spend some time with her lover. However Zazie escapes her uncle's custody and sets out to explore Paris on her own.

Mad Phoenix (Cantonese)
Multiple award nominee at the 1998 Golden Horse Awards, and deservedly so. An engaging, fascinating film encompassing character, politics and history.

Not sure your local Blockbuster will carry them but I think they are well worth the hunt.  If you're culture-distinguished mentally-challenged, I will think twice about getting these though.

Does Middle America vote for the Oscars?  No, Hollywood does.  But let's not kid ourselves, it won because it was popular and that's because Middle America decided they wanted to pat themselves on the back for being tolerant.  There have been tons of indie flicks about homosexuals, this one just happen to cross over into the mainstream.

Brokeback Mountain is overrated.  I'm an Ang Lee fan and I don't even think it was his best love story, and certainly not his best movie.  It wasn't bad, but I never got a sense that their relationship between the two main characters was anything more than physical.  If it was just lust thats fine, but the whole mood of the film tried to dictate otherwise without establishing it.

The most interesting character was the wife and I wanted to see her perspective a bit more in the film.

The book? It's based on an original screenplay from Quentin Tarantino, IIRC. It's by no means a good film, but definitely entertaining and experimental. Don't hate.

It is so disgustingly different that Quentin Tarantino asked to have his name taken off of the credits.  Nothing makes sense.  Fuck Oliver Stone.  Bahh!

It did not make sense to change it.  that's all I know.  I didn't watch what the movie was about (the leaving off the credits part was on the book) and I only saw a little bit about the sequel on TV and the guy's monologueing about pornos and...

Why sensationalize a satire?  It didn't need to be.  Asshole wanted to make money.

Why sensationalize a satire?  It didn't need to be.  Asshole wanted to make money.
The movie was about how the media sensationalizes killers, at least in Stone's version. Therefore the fact that the film itself sensationalized events was in itself making a statement about how gruesome events can be played for entertainment, and even laughs. Or something like that.
Title: Re: What should I rent tonight?
Post by: brawndolicious on August 26, 2006, 02:47:19 AM
No, the book is already there.  It does not make sense to the ideals of the story.  In Fight Club that worked because the narration was pretty much word-for-word (I'm one of the minority that thinks the book was better though but that was because the plot twist was less confusing when everything was a flashback) and then they realized what they were saying was pretty ironic.
Title: Re: What should I rent tonight?
Post by: The Miles Trahan Burger Experiment on August 26, 2006, 02:49:29 AM
Quit saying book, its not based off of any book I've ever heard of. QT wrote it as a simple story, then Stone added in the messages against sensationalizing events in the media. It still makes sense, IMO.
Title: Re: What should I rent tonight?
Post by: brawndolicious on August 26, 2006, 02:51:55 AM
Yes it was a script but it had no point of view as a movie and therefore wasn't a satire.
