Title: I am taking my first week of PERSONAL VACATION in seven years

oh, don't get me wrong: i've taken "vacations" before, but they've always been ones where i had an obligation to visit family or take the wife somewhere amusing. now, i am on vacation for ME ME ME ME, although i hafta spend the latter half of next week in clallam bay washington with the fam.

how should i squander it? advise me. i'm thinking 72 hours of titan quest and/or oblivion, punctuated only by the need to throw food into the prayer closet where my daughter will be stored.

seriously. i want to lie in my own reek, bz-like, my exposed and unshorn genitals slathered with coors light and cheez-it crumbs. what should i watch? what games should i play? what chores should i ignore? EVILBORE HELP.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who takes days off just to geek out. Whenever my friend from North Carolina goes back to sea (long boring story), I always take a day off right before he leaves so that we can make sweet sweet love play lots of 360 together.

dude, i'm a total nerd at heart. the job and the family eats up loads of time -- and despite what a few gooberati around here think, posting on a forum takes a minute or two tops, especially when there's an internet-connected pc in every room of my house -- and i LOVE wasting whole days getting my major geek on unencumbered by nasty responsibility.

life is about trade-offs. get married, and you lose the last vestiges of your personal free time in return for a chance at long-term companionship. what you gain in reduced loneliness, you lose in personal time/space. you can always feel lonely inside a relationship if the mood/depression strikes you. you can't get personal space back, though, without hurting another.

you feel the NEED to fuck. you don't NEED a woman, although society and dudes looking for an angle to patronize you like to make you think you do. women and relationships can make you just as unhappy as being "alone" (because sometimes, being "alone" is a very preferable state of affairs) can. the grass ALWAYS looks greener on the other side -- i haven't been alone in ten years, and while i dearly adore my wife, there are times when i would give just about ANYTHING for a week to utterly indulge in myself free of requests, demands, and responsibilities to another human being. living for others can weary you just as quick as living only for yourself, and life doesn't necessarily balance itself between the two. you learn to appreciate what you got, and to take advantage of any opportunity to try life the other way when it won't hurt another. in my case: VACATION TIME!

I haven't done this since like 2001, since I got some huge time off thanks to a post-release lull. That was a good week, I spent one night making food/leftovers for the whole week, and then geeked out and played through like three games, though the only one I can remember was Summoner 2.

I'd say that you need to find a game that you can just catass the fuck out of. I'm talking serious ass-bruising, indent-your chair or couch insanity. If you get up to do anything but evacuate waste or get booze and food, YOU FAIL.

My choice would probably be Titan Quest, or a deep management/strategy game ala GalCiv2/Dominions 3/good, objective/scenario-based city-builder.

I couldn't do it with Oblivion, too much about that game pisses me off to keep going.

Edit: Also, a console RPG isn't a terrible thought.

i did exactly this last week. my parents were out of town so i took the entire week off. PAID VACATION. most of it was spent sleeping, eating, or on the phone. oh i had a shopping day where i bought a ton of clothes too. i played some video games and blew about $300 out of my bank account on various things and eating out every night. it was AWESOME.

getting paid to sit on your ass is sooooo sweet.

Drinky: you'll have to tell me if you end up being disappointed with Dexter - I loved loved LOVED that show up until the last two episodes, where all the great writing of previous episodes desolves into a bunch of way-too-coincidental cliches.

But with all the praise for that show online, I think I'm alone with my opinion.

because "somewhere" is a lot of work and requires planning and preparation? i'm not big on travel, anyhow; a change of scenery's nice, but it's not what i'm craving. what i want is FREE TIME WITH LITTLE RESPONSIBILITY. i want GAMES and NERD VIEWING en masse.

i'm doin' my 10th anniversary with my wife in august/september. we'll go somewhere exotic then, although she's a bit of a homebody like me. wouldn't mind popping into hawaii or belize for a week, though, just to say i left the northern continent.

I love going places, mainly because I never leave the house.

But then I'm all confused and "how the fuck do I get to this place" and CAN YOU GIVE ME DIRECTIONS. It was a hassle just to get back to Union Station from my hotel.

I think work hard / play hard is the only way to go, I don't overanalyze the heck out of it like this here because that's wasting useful time in itself! ;)

Work your shit, request your time off in advance.

Today is my day during the week where I don't have to do much.  I'll help out with a couple things, but nothing that takes over 2 minutes to complete ;)

If you're going to go out of the country, do the best stuff!  Go to Maui and stay at the Grand Walea!

I was supposed to go to Japan last year to see Ichirou but I got promoted and that fell through  :(

I went to a bunch of other countries though.  But that was also for work.  I have a vacation at the end of May to Europe.  I'm excited about that.  I still want to go see Ichirou though  :(
