Title: Weekend Box Office 6/6-6/8: Grindhouse Bombs Big
Post by: Cheebs on April 08, 2007, 11:12:36 AM
Industry estimates were around $25 million with the Weinsteins hoping for 28-29 million for Grindhouse. Oops.

1. Blades of Glory (Paramount) - $20.8 million ($66.1 million total)
Will Ferrel's movie continues to hold on very well. It looks likey to find its way past 100 millon and continue Will Ferrel's very strong streak of hits. Will Ferrel alongside Will Arnett will star in a basketball comedy in 2008 called Semi-Pro.

2. Meet the Robinsons (Buena Vista) – $17 million ($52.2 million total)
Meet The Robinson continues to perform under Disney expectations but for a cgi film it is doing decently. It like Chicken Little will be seen as decent but under-expectations. Disney hopes to bring back their family film empire with the traditionally animated Frog Princess next year.

3. Are We Done Yet? (Sony) – $16 million ($20.3 million total)
All that has to be said is a small comedy with a weak advertising budget, no big names, and horrible reviews beat Grindhouse is shocking.

4. Grindhouse (Weinstein Co) - $13 million
(http://images.boxofficemojo.com/images/grindhouse_poster.jpg)
This film is the Weinstein Company's first real big disappointment for a big film. The film had a decent budget of 53 million but it had a very large advertising budget with a lot of effort put into getting people interested. The film did not even come close to studio low ball estimates and due to the demographic drop-off this film will be lucky to hit 30 million(industry estimates were around 70-80 million). Grindhouse shows the name Tarantino and Rodriguez do not have the boxoffice sway that many once believed. This will likely go down as one of the biggest box office disappointments of the year.

5. The Reaping (Warner Bros) –$9.1 million ($11 million total)
6. 300 (Warner Bros) - $7.5 million ($192.5 million total)
7. Wild Hogs (Buena Vista) - $6.3 million ($144.9 million total)
8. TMNT (Warner Bros) - $5.4 million ($47.2 million total)
9. Shooter (Paramount) - $5.2 million ($36 million total)
10. Firehouse Dog (Fox) – $4 million

I very much enjoyed Grindhouse.

I haven't seen Meet The Robinsons, but I love the T-Rex with a big head and little arms in the commercials.

Is it bad that I want to see The Reaping?

RR and QT have never been huge BO drawers anyways. KB 1 and 2 each made about 70M, as did Sin City.

Whatever you do, do not see the reaping that movie is bullshit. Cool to see Full moon after years but still shit. The problem with Grindhouse was two fold. It was overplayed as a very graphic movie and It opened on fucking Good Friday and the horrible family friendly only Easter weekend. When I was working yesterday people were walking out of grindhouse asking for refunds which to me is bullshit.

Next week we've got ATHF: Colon and I fear its gonna just fucking bomb as hell.

NOTE: DONT BRING KIDS TO R rated movies IF THEY CANT HANDLE SEX, BLOOD, AND ADULT DIALOGUE

Why would they open Grindhouse on a family-friendly weekend?

Someone obviously forgot it was Easter weekend. Whats worse it got beat out by a movie that opened on Wednesday that Ice Cube movie.

Seems to me like the movie was released at the wrong time. If it had come on in say October I'm sure it would have done very well. Honestly there's no point in releasing it in April, during Easter week no less. Next month is going to be the battle of blockbusters so it couldn't be released then either. In October all it would have to do is outdo Halloweeen; not that hard. People went to see 300 in droves, but despite the similar "all badass" billing Grindhouse is getting people just weren't interested.

Oh well, I suppose it's meant to be. The "grindhouse" films were never big blockbusters either

It was never meant to be a blockbuster but it was meant to make a lot more than this, they had a $53 million budget and this movie will make half of that. Plus Weinsteins gave a big advertising push which cost a lot.

It was never meant to make 100+ million but it was expected to hit around 70 million in total. For the fillms expectations from the industry and the studio it is a bomb

I think the concept behind Grindhouse is probably a little confusing to your average filmgoer.  I'll bet a lot of folks wrote it off as something they'd catch on DVD.

Also, I don't know where that big advertising budget went, because I haven't seen much of shit about it anywhere except the regular nerdsites.  To be perfectly honest, I'd forgotten it was premiering this weekend.  Maybe I'll catch it tomorrow, in case it disappears from screens soon.

I don't think it will bomb, when all is said and told.  Every nerd (like me) and Tarantino-worshipping (not like me) wannabe will be adding the triple-disc platinum collector's limited edition to their collection when it hits DVD.  It'll do well there.

What it does mean, however, is that Tarantino and Rodriguez probably won't get to indulge their film fetishes on such a large scale anymore.

That is totally lame.

Didn't "Are We Done Yet" come out like a year ago? I seem to remember a commercial with Ice Cube in a comedy about being a stepfather to precocious children.

Well to be fare they are two seperate movies. and one is going to out sell the other thats for sure. I dont think Death Proof is gonna be bought as much as Planet Terror will be on DVD. But that was the idea for DVD release. It might change since this shitty weekend.

And yeah it was about a year ago when the first ice cube movie "Are we there yet" released, but now its "Are we done yet" the second in a trilogy. About how a raper sells out.

I know Grindhouse as a concept sounded neat but it was fucking distinguished mentally-challenged to release them together.  Nobody wants to sit in a movie theatre for 3 hours.  They should've released them separately as they are doing in the rest of the world.  I wanted to duck out and check out the movie yesterday, at approx 5PM.  The closest showing was at 740PM, and knowing that I wouldn't be getting out of the theatre until near midnight killed it for me.  Nobody likes committing 3 hours to movies, let alone horror movies.  It's just a dumb idea.

The trailer period does not merit a purchase, as Nick is only in it for a whole 2 seconds.

Titanic says hello. Seriously, if people can spend three hours watching Titanic, they can spend three hours watching this. Hell, The Departed was fucking two hours and thirty minutes long, and it made money. That's not the fucking reason.

The only thing I can think of is maybe content wise it's too shocking. That's okay, these fuckers will sell like crazy on DVD.

To show you how little I pay attention to movie news (I usually like my movies to be a surprise for good or bad), I didn't know how long this double feature was until today.  That is kind of distinguished mentally-challenged, and certainly factors into box office take.  Fewer showings, fewer people willing to buy tickets for 3 + hour movies.  I was thinking each "movie" was around 45 minutes, with about fifteen minutes of fake trailers/promos sandwiched in between.  Now I don't know if I want to see it at the theater, even being as much of a Kurt Russell mark as I am.  Those ass-busting seats at the local theaters here can make my back scream in less than two hours as it is.

I think the fact that you're actually getting two full movies is a GOOD thing.  In Europe they're getting them released separately.

When I first heard about this movie I wasn't really interested. Then I saw From Dusk Till Dawn, which I felt was great; after that I really wanted to see the movie. But April has come, and I'm just not interested in spending money to see that alone. No one wants to go see it, and everyone I talk to says it looks stupid. Hm.

I thought 300 was great fun, and I'd pay to see it again, but alas I'm just not interested in seeing Grindhouse at the moment.
